Facility Management

Facility Management is defined as "A profession that encompasses multiple disciplines to


ensure functionality of the built environment by integrating people, place, processes and
technology." (International Facility Management Association (IFMA), 2008)

Moreover, the British Institute of Facilities Management defined the facility management as
Integration of processes within an organization to maintain and develop the
agreed services which support and improve the effectiveness of its primary
activities. (BIFM, 2008)

In the Philippine Setting, the following key areas were observed to be essential in Facility
management and Environmental Safety:

a. Facility Planning
In planning for facilities, the institution’s Nursing Service Department (NSD)
must be able to provide safe, functional and supportive facility to patients and their
families, staff and visitors associated with the organization’s master plan.

b. Environmental safety
It is important that the NSD has active participation in Planning, Implementation
and Evaluation of Hospital programs to provide safe and secure physical environment. It
includes written and well updated plan , implementation and evaluation of activities
pertaining to:
1. Safety and Security
2. handling, labeling, storage use inventory, and disposal of Hazardous materials
and Waste
3. Procurement, inventory, inspection, preventive maintenance and recall system on
Medical Equipment
4. Access of, monitoring of, and preventive / emergency process of Utilities
5. Anticipated Emergency plans
6. Fire safety plan
7. Infection Control
