WHAT IS TOLERANCE AND RESPECT?Tolerance and respect are fundamental values associated with the purposes and principles of the UN. Tolerance is mentioned in the text of the Preamble of the Charter of the United Nations. Also, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights begins by stating that all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. Gifted with reason and conscience should act towards one another in a spiritof brotherhood. United Nations Millennium Declaration affirms that tolerance, freedom and equality are fundamental values essential to international cooperation.Declaration of Principles of ToleranceThe General Conference of UNESCO at its 28th session in 1995 adopted a Declaration of Principles of Tolerance. This initiative was caused by deepening the phenomena of intolerance, violence, nationalism, racism and anti-Semitism, which is accompanied by marginalization and discrimination of minorities.Promotion of tolerance and respect is essential in creating an atmosphere conducive to the acceptance of cultural diversity. Article 1 of the Declaration of Principles of Tolerance is:"Tolerance is respect, acceptance and appreciation of the rich diversity of cultures in the world, our forms of expression and ways of being human. Fosters theknowledge, openness, communication and freedom of expression, conscience and belief. Tolerance is harmony in diversity. It is not only a moral obligation but also the legal and political condition. tolerance - a value that makes peace possible - helps to replace the culture war culture of peace. According tothe records of tolerance is:* Respect other people's rights and people's property;* The recognition and acceptance of individual differences;* Ability to listen, communicate and understand others;* Appreciation of the diversity of cultures;* Openness to other people's thoughts and philosophy;* Curiosity and not rejecting unknown;* The recognition that nobody has a monopoly on truth.The Declaration of UNESCO Member States stressed the need not only to fight intolerance and racism, but also the importance of cultural diversity.International Day for Tolerance (16 November)Tolerance Day celebrations are designed to:* Finding the deeper causes of intolerance;* The mobilization of public opinion in favor of tolerance and to inform them of the dangers associated with symptoms of intolerance;* Develop practical guidance for governments, researchers and public institutions to enable them to find solutions.Day of Tolerance should be an opportunity to reflect on our attitudes toward "others."
