SPEAKERS:
Our speakers were Jim Mathine and Eric Bohac. They
are inspectors from the U.S. Postal Service. Jim has
been with the service long enough to have retired and
then come back as a consultant. Eric is with the mail
fraud division. They spoke to us about the various
ways people could be defrauded through the mail and
via the Internet. They brought brochures, for
distribution, put out by the United States Postal
Service entitled; " A Consumer's Guide To
Sweepstakes And Lotteries ", " Preventing Mail
Fraud ", and " Safeguard Your Personal Information
". They also distributed a list of consumer fraud
reference phone numbers:

ANNUAL EXPENSES AND INCOME:
Elaine Wicker collated club expenses and income
from the last two years. From this data we see that our
annual fixed expenses are about $1,600. With our
recent commitment to spend $100 annually to buy tea
for the HPD, our fixed expenses will be about $1,700.
Over and above those expenses, we voted to spend
$1,200 to $2,100 annually on things we want to do,
Adopt A Family, Officer Memorial funds, etc.
Therefore, our total annual expenses were $2,900 to
$3,800. The data also shows that dues will bring in
about $1,700 a year.
Details: In the Club year 2006-2007, we spent $1,144
for the Adopt a family Christmas, HPD childrens'
college fund, and Officer Memorial Fund. This is
over and above the $1,524.53 that we spent on
continuing expenses for a total of $2,668.53. In that
same time frame, we deposited $1,365 from dues,
$2,143.42 from fund-raisers, and $15 in donations for
a total of $3,523.42. We also deposited some money
that was reimbursement for expenses and no net gain.
In the Club year 2007-2008, we spent $2,065 on
Senior Citizens Christmas gift certificates, rent for the
Adopt A Family Christmas program, HPD Christmas
gifts, H E B Criminal Justice Teen Program, and

Chief Tim Wallace's retirement gift certificate. This is
over and above the $1,600.97 we spent on continuing
expenses for a total of $3,665.97. In that same time
frame, we deposited $1,813 from dues, $1,434.18
from fund-raisers, and $115 in donations for a total of
$3,362.18. We also deposited some money that was
reimbursement for expenses and no net gain.
MEETING DOOR PRIZE DRAWING
WINNERS: The end-of-meeting drawing for door
prizes had approximately 12 winners.
THE STARS AND STRIPES CELEBRATION
A big thanks to those to help make the stars and
stripes celebration a success. They were: Otis
Vannatta, Bob & Gayle Walker, Jack Yarnell, Bill
Hines, Joel Downs, Jim & Peggy Callaway, Fred &
Doris Metcalfe, Lloyd & Sylvia Slawson, Hubert &
Dessa King, Rob Urbanek, & Nancy Gage. The
celebration attracted approximately 20,000 people
this year. The weather was hot, but not really
unpleasant. This was attested to by the large numbers
of people who attended. Gayle Walker was overcome
by the temperature and had to be treated by the HPD
and Fire Department who were, of course, already at
the scene in anticipation of this happening. Gayle was
not the only person who got a little too much heat that
day. Two children became separated from their
parents and ended up under the protection of the HPD
personnel. They were reunited with their parents
before it ended. The band turned up their speakers
loud enough to be heard, without straining, at the very
edges of the park . The end-of-day fireworks were
described later as one of the best, most spectacular
displays in the history of Stars and Stripes.
Altogether, everyone had a good time and no one
became seriously ill.
DINNER NIGHT OUT: This month's dinner night
out was hosted by Sylvia and Lloyd Slawson. They
chose the Szechuan Chinese restaurant in the
shopping center at the corner of Norwood Drive and
Grapevine Highway. The attendees were: Joanne
Downs, Barbara Denman, Scott Denman, Sylvia
Slawson, Bob Walker, Gayle Walker, Lloyd Slawson,
Peggy Callaway, Jim Callaway, Tom Wicker, Elaine
Wicker, Larry Penland, Linda Penland, Tony Horton,
Bill McClendon, Norma McClendon, Shadhu Shori,
Joan Shori, David Booe, Joy Booe, Carol Nanchy,
Bob Shanklin and Joel Downs.
MORE BIG WIND DAMAGE : Delbert O'Neal's
house and vehicle were damaged by the big wind that
blew through town on April 10th. The bench that was
sitting on his front porch was blown into the corner
support of the porch, knocking it loose from its
moorings. The bench went on to strike his truck on
the passenger side. Delbert, his son, and his ex-wife
all ended up in the hospital due to stress brought
about by the weather.
SUNSHINE REPORT:
Delbert O'Neal will not have eye surgery this month.
The doctor wants to wait awhile and allow Delbert,
and his eye, to heal more and get stronger.
Betty Kopitski's daughter starts chemo this week. She
has a cancerous lesion in her lungs.
Nadine Madzik's sister passed away.
Earline Allred is doing well, she had a CAT scan
Friday, the 18th.

restaurant for our monthly Dinner Night
Out. Months with empty spaces beside them indicate

2537, or sign it at the meeting. Dinner Night Out is on
Thursday, a week after the monthly HCPAAA
meeting, usually beginning at 6:30pm.

GREETERS FOR CPA CLASS #23:

The following people have signed up to be greeters
for the CPA class. It will begin August 14th and end
November 6th. Two greeters are required for each
Thursday night class. The place is the HPD building
at the Hurst City Hall complex on Precinct Line
Road, the time will be from 5:50 pm to about 6:15
pm, the task will be to open the locked door for the
students and escort them to the class room in the HPD
building. Jim Callaway has the sign up sheet for this.
If you want to sign up, call him at 817-284-2537, or
sign up at the next meeting. See below the people
