/ VERSION HISTORY /

/___________________________________________________________________________/

September 09, 2009: Beginning of Bare-bones Guide

September 10 - October 5, 2009: Writing the Johto Guide

October 13, 2009 - January 11, 2010: Writing the Kanto Guide

______________________________________________________________________________

February 15, 2010: Hello everyone! Now that we have the Kanto guide out of

the way, the guide is now up to version 3.00! We have made

several changes to the guide that should bring this guide

up to speed for the English release in March.

* Thanks to serebii.net, various names of the English

version have been revealed, including your other gender

rival's names, team rocket executives, various item

names, and a few locations that were not in the original

GSC. They have been changed in this version of the guide

to reflect the English version of the game.

The Poketholon has been changed to Pokeathlon, and the

Technique stat is now the Skill stat. The Pokedex section

has been edited to reflect these changes.

* Added the Kanto guide up to the Viridian Gym

* Pokeathlon stats and Move Tutor info up to the Sinnoh Dex

have been added

* Japanese/English changes added to the Changes FAQ

section.

If anything has been changed from what serebii says, or any

new info is revealed, I will add it to the guide. If you

see anything that references the Japanese version, then let

me know.

As far as the next update goes, I will try to get the

Updated Pokemon League, Cerulean Cave, and Mt. Silver and

the final battle in before or around the release of HGSS

in North America.
______________________________________________________________________________

March 09, 2010: Only several more days until HG/SS is released in the

United States! Here is a update to help finish up a bunch

of things.

* Added the Endgame Guide section. This covers the rematch

against the Elite Four, Mt. Silver, and the final battle

against the former Champion.

* Added the Battle Frontier guide from my Platinum guide,

and corrected it for HGSS.

* Added a variety of Legendary areas, including two of the

Legendary Birds, and Suicune.

Originally, this update was going to contain info on

Cerulean Cave/Mewtwo and Seafoam/Articuno, but I wanted to

get the info on the updated Elite Four and Mt. Silver

before the game comes out in the US. Hopefully, they should

be in Version 3.11, which I will try to get out before the

US version comes out.

As for updates, I am going to try to do at least one more

update before it is released. If there is any major things

revealed before the release, such as any English names and

the like, I will try to add it to the guide. It might take

me a few days to get through HGSS, so bear with me when it

comes to updates.

______________________________________________________________________________

March 12, 2010: Got several more updates today!

* Added Mewtwo/Cerulean Cave and Articuno/Seafoam Island

to the side-quest section.

* Re-did the Pokemon Encounter rates to include Pokemon

that are available via Rock Smash and Headbutting

Trees. Also removed any instances of surfing or national

dex Pokemon where there are none for that route or area.

* Added info to the Pokedex section on Pokemon that can

only be found in the special Safari Zone settings or

via the Pokewalker.

By the time this update should be out, Pokemon HGSS should

be available in the United States. I will try to answer

any questions that come along, and fix any errors as soon

as I can.

There should be a lot more content in the following updates

(Phone info, Gym Leader rematches, Pokeathlon and Pokewalker

info, etc), so stay tuned!

______________________________________________________________________________

March 14, 2010: Hello English players! If you are reading this, you

probably picked up HGSS from your local store. This update

is mostly a few corrections from the Japanese version.

* Changed the info on the old man in the beginning of

Cherrygrove

* Renamed all instances of Tin Tower to Bell Tower.

* Changed the rival's first encounter from ??? to Passerby

Boy.

* Re-did the Game Corner section of Goldenrod.

* Added the questions the lady at the Goldenrod Radio Tower

asks you.

I will be adding more as I play the English version.

Nintendo has also announced that the Yellow Forrest event

for the Pokewalker will become available on April the 1st

up until April the 30th.

______________________________________________________________________________

March 16th, 2010: Hello everyone! I am near the end of the English Version

(Got all 16 badges and most of the legendaries), so I have

several major additions.

* Added English names for trainers on the routes, caves,

and Gyms.
* Added Lapras to the side quest section.

* Added the PokeGear Phone Numbers to the guide.

* Added Daily/Weekly side quests as well as a schedule

for what you can do on each day.

* Added the questions the elder at the Dragon's Den asks

you and clarified how you get a Dratini.

* Added several places you can get decent hidden items,

like Rare Candy

* Added info on things you can do once you can surf

* Added some more info on various places, like the

Goldenrod Underground and the Celadon Game Corner

* Added a capture profile for Sudowoodo in the main

guide.

* Did a number of corrections, mainly stuff people pointed

out in their emails.

I was going to add Entei and Raikou in this update, but due

to time I will have to do it in the next one. Currently,

I am up to date with my emails and if I have not responded,

it is either because I already corrected something, the

question is already in the guide, or it is a old email.

Also, the next week might not have any updates, since I

will be rather busy. I will still answer any questions, and

if you still see anything wrong, let me know.

______________________________________________________________________________

April 7th, 2010: It has been awhile since I last updated...I have been

working on this version for awhile, but due to a variety of

things going on I have not had much of a chance to work on

it for half a month. Here is the updates:

* Added the Berry Guide section, which is a heavily

modified version of my berry guide from Platinum

* Added the side quest section for non-weekly or daily

side-quests

* Added Entei and Raikou to the side quest section

* Split the Pokegear Phonenumber section into a new

part of the guide called "Pokegear Guide"

* Corrected the Extremespeed Dratini info that MANY of you

have emailed me about.

* Added the requested Exclusives Guide to the Misc Guide

section

* Added the Special Wallpapers and Eggs section

* Added a new way to look at your Secret ID.

* Added my friends code at the bottom. If you feel like

battling, let me know and we will work out a time. I will

not do trades, however.

* Did several corrections here and there.

I have gone through all of my emails and made the changes

that were necessary. As for the next updates, I do plan on

adding some info on the Pokewalker finally after testing it

out for the last month or so, and I also plan to cover the

two new routes in Johto. I will be going on a trip at the

end of the month, so do not expect any updates until May.

______________________________________________________________________________

April 18, 2010: Although I did not add the new areas to the guide in this

update, I did add a few things I have been wanting to add

for awhile.

* Added the Swarm, Headbutt, Bug Catching Contest, and

Hoenn and Sinnoh sound to the Post-National Dex section

* Added the Bank of Mom and Rock Smash Item section to

the misc guide section.

* Thanks to a reader with the handle Tarken, I found out

that I missed the Wise Glasses item in not only the

main guide, but in the items guide.

* Thanks to a reader named Julie, I have made some changes

to the ability section for quite a few abilities.

* Thanks to a reader named Jeremy, we have some more info

on the Voltorb Flip game that I absolutely hate.

* Did some other minor corrections here and there.

I got to most of the emails, but there are still I few I

need to check although I got most of the important stuff

out of the way. Also, for those who do not know Pokemon

Black and White have been revealed and will be released in

Japan at the end of this year on the DS. Goodie...More work

in front of me.

/ JOHTO GUIDE /

/___________________________________________________________________________/

When you first start up the game, you will be taken to a screen that has

several options on it. Press the bottom one to continue. Prof. Oak will then

appear and ask you if you are a boy or a girl and then your name. Once that is

done, you will be taken to New Bark Town.

/ NEW BARK TOWN /

/___________________________________________________________________________/

You will start in your room. Head on down and your mother will give you your
bag. You can now also save and view your status.

When you first step out, Marill will come up to you and then leave and you

will see the first glimpse of the opposite gender rival. If you are playing

as a male, your opposite gender rival will be Lyra, a new addition to the

GSC story and a replacement for Crystal's Kris female character. Female

characters will meet Ethan, the original protagonist from GSC.

You can explore a little bit and see a red haired boy in the window, but for

now continue to Prof. Elm's lab (The big building in the upper left). Go

inside and he will ask you to run a errand for him and let you choose between

3 Pokemon.

* Totodile, a water Pokemon

* Chikorita, a grass Pokemon

* Cyndaquil, a fire Pokemon

In this game, Cyndaquil is actually easy mode, Totodile is medium, and

Chikorita is hard to use against the gyms, so choose wisely. The Pokemon

you choose will also appear behind you now. Before you leave, Prof. Elm's

aid will give you 5 Potions.

After you exit the lab, Ethan or Lyra will appear and talk to you and leave

again. Once that is finished, go talk to your mother and she will give you

the Pokegear. It is similar to how it worked in the original GSC versions,

but it now has touchscreen support. Leave your house and try to go west

and Prof. Elm will appear and give you his phone number. Once you are ready,
head to Route 29.

* Note that items such as Pokeballs will not be available until after you

have learned how to capture Pokemon.

Once you enter Cherrygrove, a old man at the entrance will show you around and

then give you the Running Shoes, a staple of the series since RSE that allows

you to run when you hold the B Button. If you tap the shoes on the touch

screen, they will allow you to run without pressing the B Button. However,

keep in mind that wild pokemon will appear more if you are using the Running

Shoes, so you may want to walk while you are in grass.

You might want to heal up at this point at the Pokemon Center. You cannot

capture Pokemon at the moment, so you will have to wait. You can buy Potions

however. Once you are ready, head over to Route 30. When you try to leave,

the old man will stop you and give you a Pokegear add-on called the Map

Card. It will allow you to see the map via the Pokegear and keep track of

any roaming Pokemon you have active.

Route 30 has changed a little bit since the old days. You still do not have

any Pokeballs, but you can get a Apricorn Box from the man in the first house

around Johto.

You can't go up the west side of the route yet, so continue to the east side

up to Mr. Pokemon's house. Inside, you will find Prof. Oak and Mr. Pokemon

talking and Mr. Pokemon will give you the Odd Egg key item and heal your

Pokemon. After that, Prof Oak will give you the Johto Pokedex and his

phone number. Head outside and Prof. Elm will call you and say that one of his

Pokemon has been stolen.

+========================+

Cherrygrove and Route 29

Head back to Cherrygrove and then to Route 29 (Make sure your Pokemon are

healed). A red haired boy will appear and you will find out he was the one

who stole the Pokemon and then fight you.

\____________________________________________________________________________/

Once that is done, heal up at the Pokemon Center and head back to New Bark

Town and to Prof. Elm's lab.

Inside, Prof. Elm will be talking to a police officer, and Ethan or Lyra will

appear and then the Police Officer will ask you for your Rival's name. Like

your name, you can only do 5 characters in the Japanese version so choose

well. Talk to Prof. Elm and you will give him the Odd Egg.

Once you are ready, head back to Route 229 and Ethan or Lyra will be there and

explain how you capture Pokemon. After he/she shows you, they will give you 5

Pokeballs. You can also now buy Pokeballs from the Pokemarts.
Now that you have some Pokeballs, you can finally access the early part of

Route 46. Head to Route 29 go on the upper part of the route until you find a

gatehouse that will lead to the first half of Route 46.

Not much you can do on the southern part of Route 46. There are a few rare

Pokemon you can capture, such as Geodude and Spearow. When you try to go

North, you will find that the path is blocked due to a ledge. You won't be

able to reach the other side until much later in the game.

Head back to Cherrygrove (Might want to buy some Pokeballs), and then to

Route 30 again.

A little different from the first game, the ruins are now locked and the only

way to activate them is to go to the one open ruin on the right side. Inside,

you will find a Kabuto puzzle. Unlike the first game, you now use the touch
screen to figure it out, and you have to rotate the pieces with your stylus.

Once you solve it, you will drop down into the ruins.

Inside, a researcher will talk to you and then give you the Unown Report, a

special Pokedex that records what Unown (A special psychic Pokemon exclusive

to the Ruins of Alph). It will only record them when you capture them, and

will list what the Unown mean in English. You can access the Unown Report via

the Key Items slot. Once you are ready, head down to find a ladder to get out.

At this point, the other ruins are sealed, so you cannot get all the Unown at

this point. Continue back to Violet city.

A few things you can do before continuing. Talk to the man behind the Pokemart

and select the last option and he will twirl around and take you to the

trainer's school. He is the teacher there and is named Mr. E (Earl). Inside,

there is a man that will have you enter in something, and Earl will ask you

questions. Email me if you have any info.

If you have a Bellsprout, you can trade for a Onix in the lower right house

that is near the Pokemon center. It will be helpful for the upcoming battle

against the Gym Leader. You can capture a Bellsprout by going to Route 30,

although they are uncommon. Once you are ready, go north to Sprout Tower.

of their Pokemon will be Bellsprout. Go right and then head down the ladder,

and then go left and up the ladder. On the next floor, go down and then right

to the next ladder.

You will then be on the top floor. Battle the monks and go forward. You will

Talk to the head monk and he will battle you.

Info: Depending on what starter you have, this can either be a very easy or

a very hard battle. Cyndaquil can handle this fine, but Totodile will

have problems with the two bellsprouts, and Chikorita will be weak

against Hoothoot. Its recommended that you have another Pokemon with

you, such as Zubat/Pidgey for the Bellsprout and Onix/Geodude for the

Hoothoot. The bellsprouts usually just use Vine Whip and occasionally

growth, while Hoothoot likes to use Hypnosis and then Peck.

\----------------------------------------------------------------------------/
Once you beat him, you will get TM70, Flash. Either walk back down or use the

Escape Rope to exit

+===========+

Violet City

+===========+

Now that you have done that, you can now challenge the gym leader. You will

want your Pokemon to be about level 9 or above for the most part, and if you

have a Chikorita, you will want a additional Pokemon (Such as Onix). Once

you are ready, go to the Violet City Gym.

In order to use the lift to get to the top floor, you will need to have beaten

Sprout Tower and its leader. Once you do that, you will be able to go to the

top.

You can either avoid the trainers, or fight them, but you may want to for the

experience alone. Once you are ready talk to the gym leader Falkner to start

the battle.

/____________________________________________________________________________\

Boss: Falkner

____________________________________________________________________________

Pokemon:

Pidgey lv 9 (Normal/Flying)

Pidgeotto lv 13 (Normal/Flying)

____________________________________________________________________________

Info: Falkner has increased his levels a little, now being a little tougher

then he used to be. His Pidgey likes to use Sand Attack and then

tackle a whole bunch, so you may want to bring a Pokemon that can take

it out quickly before it does sand attack too many times.

Pidgeotto, however, it the real problem. It likes to use Gust, Tackle,

and Roost. If you have a Cyndaquil, Totodile or their evolutions, use

them. If you choose Chikorita, you are going to have to be a little

more crafty.

One strategy I used with Chikorita was to use Onix first and beat the

Pidgey (Onix was at level 8), and then switch to Chikorita and use

Poisonpowder and switch back to Onix. As long as you have potions,

Pidgeotto will eventually run out of Roosts to use (Roost recovers

health and makes any flying Pokemon the normal type). Another strategy

is to use a fighting move once it uses Roost.

\____________________________________________________________________________/

Once you beat Falkner, you will get TM51 (Roost) and the Zephyr Badge. All

Pokemon you get in trades up to level 20 will now obay you, and you can now

use Rock Smash out of battle as well.

After you leave the Gym, Prof. Elm will call you and tell you to meet up with

his aide at the Pokemart. Go to the Pokemart and talk to the aide to get a

egg with Togepi in it. When you leave the Pokemart, one of the Kimono girls

from the original G/S/C will come up to you and talk about your egg and run

off.

Once you are ready, go south of the Pokemart until you reach Route 32.

At the bottom, you will find Kurt injured. Leave him be for now and head right

and enter the entrance. Keep following the path and fighting the Team Rocket

grunts until you reach the end. Once you are ready, talk to the green haired

Rocket Admin to fight him.

Zubat lv 8

Koffing lv 12

____________________________________________________________________________

Info: A pretty simple battle. His Zubat is your average one, so take it down

with electric or rock attacks. His Koffing is a different story,

though. It has higher defense, so it might take a few turns to bring

it down. Its attacks are nothing special though, just Smog, Tackle

and Smokescreen for the most part. Very easy battle.

\____________________________________________________________________________/

After you beat Executive Proton, Kurt will appear and take you back to his

house where he will give you a special Apricorn Pokeball called the Fast Ball
and his daughter will ask if you would like to register their phone number.

You have a choice: You can either face your Rival now or wait until after the

Gym. If your Pokemon are at least level 15 or above, go for it. Otherwise,

wait until afterwards. For now, lets go to the Gym for the second badge.

The gym has changed a little bit from what you remember. There are several

robotic Spinarak that you ride to get to the other side. However, they go

in a certain path that you have to follow. Go on the wrong path, and you

might have to fight a trainer.

Anywho, here is the solution to get to the Gym Leader:

1. Take the left Spinarak and fight the trainer

2. Take the lone Spinarak and fight the twins. Use the lever next to them

3. Ride the Spinarak back on the path and hit the next lever.

Once that is done, you will fight the gym leader, Bugsy.

Pokemon:

Scyther lv 17 (Flying/Bug)

Metapod lv 15 (Bug)

Kakuna lv 15 (Bug/Poison)

____________________________________________________________________________

Info: Bugsy may have the same team from back then, but the strategy is very
different. One main change is he starts with Scyther. Reason being is

Scyther now uses U-Turn a powerful attack that switches out with

another Pokemon after it is used. Kakuna and Metapod are both very

weak and only have the attacks they had when they were Weedle and

Caterpie respectively, so they are not hard to KO.

The real danger actually begins after both are knocked out, since he

can now use U-Turn without having to switch out. Many times it will be

a instant knockout, so be careful. Scyther also has Quick Attack, Leer

and Focus Energy (Be careful if he uses Focus Energy). The best

Pokemon to use is fire and rock (Quilava, Geodude, and Onix are all

good Pokemon to use). Pokemon with high resistance also helps as well.

It might be a good idea to use some potions and wait until he runs

out of PP for U-Turn if he is too hard otherwise.

\----------------------------------------------------------------------------/

Once you beat Bugsy, you will get the Hive Badge and TM89. You can now also

use cut outside of battle and control traded Pokemon up to level 30. Once you

are ready, hit the switch next to Bugsy to go back to the entrance and back to

Azalea Town.

If you have not fought your rival yet, go back to the Pokemon center first and

up. Boss time!

Croconaw (If you choose Cyndaquil) lv 18 (Water)

____________________________________________________________________________

Info: Your rival's Pokemon are a little higher then they were in the past.

Its recommended that your team is at least level 15 before fighting

him.

Gastly is a new Pokemon you have not fought yet, and is a ghost and

Poison type. Normal attacks will not effect it, so ghost and psychic

attacks work well. It has Levitate, so ground attacks are useless

against it.

Zubat is nothing new. Electric, Psychic or rock attacks all work well

against it. Onix, Mareep, and Geodude are all good to use.

Finally, your rival's starter is your biggest threat. Unlike later

games, the Johto starters do not have a dual type, so you cannot
exploit any other weaknesses. Ground attacks are useful against

Quilava, grass and electric are good against Croconaw, and flying is

effective against Bayleef. Onix/Geodude, Flaffy, and Pidgey are useful

in that order.

\----------------------------------------------------------------------------/

Once you beat him, he will run back into the Ilex Forest. Head back to the

Pokemon Center and heal. You might want to pick up a few repels before you

Once you are ready, head up and you will talk to one of the people from the

Charcoal house from Azalea. He mentions that several of his Farfetch'd have

run off, and wants you to go get them.

The trick to capturing them is sneaking up behind them, and that becomes hard

if you step on the twigs. The first time you go to the right, you will always

step on the twigs and have the Farfetch'd notice you. After you do that, go

to the right and avoid the other set of twigs and go around the right path

until you are behind the Farfetch'd. Press A and you will capture it.

For the second one, chase it to the right side by going up the left and

pressing A. After that, go back down and on the right path. Step on the

first set of twigs to make the Farfetch'd look to the right, and then go up

and ignore the second patch and go down and press A.

After that, the owner will show up and give you HM01 Cut. Teach it to one of

your Pokemon and then cut down the tree that is in front of you. Also, if you

go back to Azalea Town and go to the building that is on the far right bottom,

talk to the assistant inside and he will give you the Charcoal item. It will

increase fire type moves when it is attached to a Pokemon.

Once you cut down the tree, go up and then up to the left. Then go right

and up. After that, you will meet one of the Kimono girls again. Press the top

option and your Pokemon will jump around and she will leave.
There is also a path on the right side that will lead you to a big guy that is

headbutting a tree. If you talk to him, he will teach any of your Pokemon

Headbutt, and he will do this any number of times that you ask.

Go left to find the exit. In the gatehouse, talk to the woman with the

Butterfree to get TM12 (Taunt).

Route 34 is full of various trainers to fight and new Pokemon to catch. One

of those Pokemon is Abra, a very hard to catch Pokemon unless you have sleep
moves. Its also a good route to gain experience on, since you will want your

Pokemon to be about level 16 or above.

Another landmark on this route is the daycare/breeding center. When you get

close, Ethan/Lyra will appear and talk to the Daycare couple. As it turns out,

they are Ethan/Lyra's grandparents. He/she will then take you inside and

introduce you to his/her grandma and give you their phone number phone number.

Once you exit, the old man will give you his phone number as well. You can now

use the center for leveling your Pokemon (1 step = one EXP point), or put two

Pokemon in and create a egg if they are compatible and a male and female

(Look at the breeding guide for more info).

Near the end of the route, if you go to the right, you can find TM63 (Embargo)

in the grass in a item ball out in the open.

Once you are ready, head north to Goldenrod City.

The Goldenrod Underground is located south of the game corner and also near

the Name Raters house at the north part of Goldenrod. When you first enter,

Ethan or Lyra will appear and give you the Accessory Case. While there is

no contests in Johto, they can be used for dressing up your Pokemon for

pictures.

Once you are in the underground, you will find several trainers. There is also

a variety of different things that appear down there on certain days. The

Bargain Shops appears on Monday mornings, and has sell-able items that you can

buy for slightly lower.

The two hairdressers that raise your Pokemon's happiness appear on Tuesday,

Thursday, and Saturday for the older brother (Costs 500p, but you get more

happiness on your Pokemon), and the younger brother shows up on Sunday,

Wednesday, and Friday (300p, but less happiness gain).

Finally, the herb shop sells various bitter herbs that are cheaper then buying

them from a Pokemon shop, but decrease your Pokemon's happiness.

You can also take pictures by talking to the guy on the upper right side. You

can take a special picture dressed in a Team Rocket uniform.

+=====================+

Goldenrod Game Corner

+=====================+

The game corner side quest is slightly different depending on what version

you are playing. You can find the game corner above the Pokemon Center.

JAPANESE VERSION:

==============================================================================

In the game corner, you can find TM78 (Captivate). To play any of the slots,

you will need to go to the underground portion of Goldenrod that is south of

the game corner.

The slots are similar to how they were in the past: You can pay either 1, 2 or

3 coins and depending on how many you put in you can line them up several

ways. You can also get a bonus round if you line up 3 Pokeballs. The machines

also sometimes pay out more for match ups and is shown at the top.

==============================================================================

You can still get the Accessory Case by going to the underground, although you

can no longer find the Coin Case there.

NORTH AMERICAN AND PAL VERSIONS:

==============================================================================

The game corner has been completely been redesigned. The TM for Captivate is

no longer located there, and the building is now only a card table with a

NPC called Mr. Game with two old gentlemen that act as the receptionist. You

can't buy coins anymore, either. On the other hand, the mini-game no longer

requires you to spend coins. If you talk to Mr. Game, he will give you the

Coin Case.

The new game is a minesweeper-like game called Voltorb Flip. The game is a

bit complicated when you first do it, but it is basic once you figure it out:

There are 5 rows with 5 blocks in each, with a total of 25 blocks total for

the entire game. On the right side and on the bottom is the number of Voltorbs

that is on that row, and what the number adds up to. So, if a row has a 05

at the top and 0 Voltorb, that means that there is all 1s there.

You gain coins depending on how many multiples you can get. Say, for example

that you get 1 to begin with, you will get 1 coin. If you keep finding 1s,

then it will not go up, but if you find a 2x or 3x, you will double your coins

and get 2 or 3 coins.

If you find another 2x or 3x, the amount you have in the Coins Collected in

Current Game will be multiplied. However, if you run into a Voltorb, it will

be game over and you will lose any coins for the current game.
You can, however, collect any coins you have with the current game by pressing

the B button. Any coins you collected during your game will be added to your

coin case. You level up by finding all the 2 and 3 numbers on the board.

The best advise I have is to knock out the rows with 0 Voltorb first, and then

tackle the other rows. If you don't feel too brave, you can quit after taking

out the 0 voltorb rows and still have a decent amount of coins left over most

of the time.

Jeremy has this to add:

______________________________________________________________________________

"Flipping 2's and 3's is the only way to earn coins and clear the level, so a

lot of playing the game boils down to identifying squares that don't have a 2

or 3; skipping those squares improves your chances a lot.

If the number plus the voltorb count for a row or column totals to 5, don't

bother flipping any squares there, it's only 1's and Voltorbs. For example,

if the row says 4 / 1, then there is one Voltorb and 4 1's in that row.

If the number plus the voltorb count is bigger than 5, that tells you how

many "extras" or scorable points there are in that row or column. For

example, if the column says 4 / 2, the total is 6, one more than 5; this

tells you that there is one scoring square in that column (the column will be

two Voltorbs, two 1's and one 2).

However, it's not always that simple. When the number of "extras" gets

higher, you can't be sure how many scoring squares there are. For example, a
row that is 6 / 1 could be : (one voltorb, three 1's and one 3) or (one

voltorb, two 1's and two 2's).

The strategy I use is :

- First flip all the squares in rows and columns with 0 Voltorbs

- Identify the rows and columns that don't have any "extras" and use the memo

function to mark them all (I mark them as a "1" since that's the best that

is there, but you could mark them as being either "voltorb" or "1"). I

usually never flip these marked squares.

- Pick the row with the highest number of extras that are still unknown (if

you're greedy) or pick the row with extras that has the lowest number of

Voltorbs (if you're cautious).

- Pick a column in the same way, and flip the square for your chosen row and

column. This isn't guaranteed to be safe, sometimes you will lose when you

do this. It's a matter of guessing and playing the odds; if you do it

right it will be safe more often than not.

- Repeat the above steps as you go, using logic to figure out rows or columns

which only have 1's and Voltorbs left, and flipping the squares that seem

most likely to have a scoring number. Sometimes I can figure out exactly

where some of the Voltorbs are, and I use the memo function to label those.

I tend to start a game being greedy and get more conservative as I go.

- When things go well, the last few moves are sure things. If I've got a
good score but there are no sure things at the end, it's time to quit and

start a new game that will hopefully be easier."

and a rather powerful one at that.

+=======+

The GTS

+=======+

Located on the left side of Goldenrod, the GTS is similar to its Platinum

incarnation. So much so that it connects to the same server at D/P/Pl. You

can either put your Pokemon up to trade or request a similar one. You will

need to have seen the Pokemon in your Pokedex to request or search for it

on the GTS.

+============+

Other Things

+============+

There is a tent on the upper right side of Goldenrod with a old man inside.

He will allow you to change your Pokemon's nickname if you talk to him.
If you go on the right path in the middle and go down, you can find the

Cycling Shop. Talk to the man inside and he will give you a free bike.

It is a little different then its D/P/Pl incarnation, since it does not have

two speeds and is hard to turn even though it is at normal speed.

Once you capture or defeat the Sudowoodo, you can buy Mulch at the flower

shop (Growth Mulch, Stable Mulch, Damp Mulch, and Gooey Mulch for 200p

each).

There is a lady in a house to the right of the Department Store that will let

you know how your Pokemon like you. This is handy if you have a Pokemon you

want to evolve from a happiness evolution.

If you go to the gym, you will find a woman blocking the way. She tells you

that Whitney, the Gym leader, is at the Radio Tower on the west side of

Goldenrod. Head to the radio tower and talk to the attendant next to Whitney

(The red haired girl) and answer the following:

Question #1: Can you check the Town Map with your Pokegear?

- Yes

Question #2: NIDORINA can only be female. True?

- Yes

Question #3: Kurt, the Poke Ball Creator, uses apricots as Ingredients?

- No
Question #4: It's impossible to use a TM on MAGIKARP, True?

- Yes

Question #5: In Professor Oak's popular show, Pokemon Talk, is he on with

Marie?

- No

Once you do that, you will win the Radio Card expansion and Whitney will

return to the Gym. You can now enter the gym and challenge her.

the stairs and go through the tunnel.

- Go fight the two trainers and go up through the other tunnel to Whitney.

Boss: Whitney

____________________________________________________________________________

Pokemon:
Clefairy lv 17 (Normal)

Milktank lv 19 (Normal)

____________________________________________________________________________

Info: The same levels you fought her at in GSC, Whitney has not changed too

much. Her Clefairy can use Mimic to learn the last attack you did,

Doubleslap, and Metronome to do a random attack.

Her Milktank is the same as always. It knows Attract to make it hard

for male Pokemon to hit, the powerful Stomp attack, Milk Drink to

recover health, and Rollout. Rollout is her most dangerous attack,

since it gains power every time it is used and only goes back to

normal if it misses.

Best thing to do is to bring a fighting type Pokemon or a Pokemon that

can use fighting type moves. Ghosts also work well to a point,

although Rollout is a rock type attack, so be careful of using flying

Pokemon.

\____________________________________________________________________________/

After you beat her, Whitney will start crying and won't give you the badge.

When you try to leave, one of the trainers will stop you and tell her to talk

to Whitney again. She will then give you the Plain Badge and TM45 Attract.

There are a couple of things you can do on this route. There is a man to the

right that will take a picture of you and your team if you say Yes. You can

do this as many times as you want. Keep going on the route and fighting the

trainers. Once you are near the end, you can finally capture some Pokemon.

You can get Nidoran male and female on this route.

Once you hit the grass part head right, fight the trainer, and cut down the

tree. Continue up and then go to the right some more and you will eventually

find the tree that was blocking your way earlier. By now, you have reached

Route 36.

Alternatively, you can keep going straight and head to the National Park

Ah, the National Park. Depending on what day it is, you can enter in the

Bug-Catching Contest. On Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, you can register

at one of the gatehouses to enter the competition.

There are several decent items here as well. If you go in a hole in the gate

on the upper right side and go on the left path, you will find TM 28 (Dig),

and going on the right path will have a Sooth Bell, a great tool for making

Pokemon that evolve via Happiness get there much quicker.

Otherwise, the place is full of trainers. Once you are ready, continue east

____________________________________________________________________________

Info: As some of you might be aware from playing GSC and D/P/Pl, Sudowoodo

Kick, Rock Throw, and Mimic. While it is not very strong, its defenses

are rather high, making it rather hard to capture without a decent

water or grass Pokemon (Paralyze and Sleep also work well here).

Beware of his flail attack though, since it will do a ton of damage

if its HP is low.

\____________________________________________________________________________/

It is a lv 20 Sudowoodo, something you might want to consider catching since

it is the only one in this game (You can get plenty of them in D/P/Pl though

so it is up to you). If you do not capture it now, it will re-appear after you

beat the Elite Four.

After you do that, a girl that is near the tree will give you the Berry Pots

key item, the main way to grow berries in Johto. You can grow up to 4 of them

at a time, and she also gives you some berries to go along with it. After

that, go left and then up and you will hit route 37.

Head to the Pokemon Center first. When you do, you will meet Bill, the man who

build the PC Storage system you use to store Pokemon. If you go back to his

house in Goldenrod, you can get a lv 5 Eevee.

If you go inside the house that is to the left of the Pokemon Center, the man

inside will give you the Dowsing MCHN, formerly known as the Itemfinder in

GSC. It has been upgraded and now has touchscreen support.

Once you get the Dowsing MCHN, look near the water fountain on the right of

Bell Tower on the right side of Ecruteak. You can find a hidden Rare Candy

near there.

If you go into the house above the Pokemon Center, you will see one of the

Kimono girls talking to a team rocket member. Go up and fight the rocket, all

he has is a lv 12 Koffing. After you beat him, the rocket will run off. Once

you get off the stage, the man sitting in the audience will give you HM 03

(Surf), although you cannot use it at the moment since you do not have the

badge.

You cannot enter the Bell Tower (Formerly the Tin Tower) at the moment, but

you can get your picture taken in front of the entrance. Once you are ready

to continue, head to the upper left corner and enter the burned tower.

Psychic attacks, use them. Magnemite is fairly dangerous, since it

can confuse you will Supersonic, attack you with Thunderbolt, and take

off 20 HP every turn with Sonic Boom. Ground attacks work best, but
fire and fighting are also effective.

Zubat has Bite and Supersonic, so take it out with a Electric or Rock

A little different then the GSC, Morty's gym now has a visible walkway.

However, the trick is that you are going to fight pretty much every trainer

in the gym. Once you beat them, their light goes out, making it hard to get

to the end. If you fall into the pit, you are warped back to the beginning

of the gym. The good thing is once you do step in the pit, the trainer's light
comes back on. Once you get to the end, save and fight Morty.

Haunter lv 21 (Ghost/Poison)

Haunter lv 23 (Ghost/Poison)

Gengar lv 25 (Ghost/Poison)

____________________________________________________________________________

Info: Morty, who was one of the toughest gym leaders in the original GSC,

keeps his position in HG/SS. If you are unprepared, you are going to

have major issues.

First, Gastly. It does not use too many attacks, but its biggest

threat is Curse: A attack that halves its HP and takes away some HP

every turn. It cancels out if you switch out, but it likes to use

Mean Look to keep you into battle. Finally, it uses Spite to lower

your attack PP slowly.

The level 21 is another threat. It likes to use Hypnosis first, and

then it likes to use Dream Eater. It also has Night Shade, a attack

that does damage equal to your level, and Curse again. Best thing to

do is have a bunch of Awakenings. Morty also has a second Haunter, so

take care of it the same way you did this one.

His Gengar, however, is his biggest threat. Its main attack is Shadow

Ball, a very powerful ghost attack. He can also use Sucker Punch as

well. Best thing to do is to use a normal Pokemon to cancel out his

Shadow Ball attack.

So, what is recommended? Normal Pokemon are all good to use, since

they have total resistance against Ghost Pokemon. The double-edge to

this is normal attacks do not hit Ghost Pokemon, so you will need to

have other element attacks on your Pokemon (The goldenrod department

store is a good place for them). Psychic and Dark attacks work well,

so Pokemon that have Confusion or Bite are good. Butterfree learns

Confusion, and Zubat and several others learn Bite. Because they are

part poison, you can not put Poison condition on them, so you might

want to Paralyze or put his team to Sleep. Also, because they all have

the levitate ability, you cannot use ground attacks again his Pokemon.

\____________________________________________________________________________/

After the battle, Morty will give you the Fog Badge, which lets you control

traded Pokemon up to level 50 and allows you to use Surf outside of battle. He

also gives you TM30, Shadow Ball.

Head back to the Pokemon Center and heal. Now, for some other stuff to do. If

you go east to Route 42, you will find a cave and some water you can surf

across. Next to the cave is TM65, Shadow Claw. Its a decent TM, so you might

want to pick it up. When you go near a cave, a mountain climber will come out

and give you HM04, Strength. You can surf on the other side and reach Mahogany

Town sooner then normal and do the Rocket Hideout + Gym there early, but for
now we will wait on that.

There are now a few things you can do with Surf. Here are a list of places

with areas with decent items that you can get.

+================+

Cherrygrove City

+================+

In Cherrygrove City, there is some water on the left side you can surf across

to find a small island with a man on it. Talk to him and he will give you the

Mystic Water item, which powers up Water-type moves.

+========+

Route 30

+========+

On the right side of Route 30 at the very beginning coming from Cherrygrove is

a pond you can surf on. Go down and you can find a Nugget that is invisible by

pressing A (Use the Dowsing MCHN if you have trouble finding it).

+===========+

Violet City

+===========+

Near the Sprout Tower is some water you can surf across. If you surf on the

left side, you will find a PP Up. If you surf on the right, you will find a
Rare Candy.

+=============+

Slowpoke Well

+=============+

You will need both Strength and Surf for this. Go back to the area where you

fought the Rocket Executives and you will find a boulder on the left side that

you can push. Go down the path and you will find a area you can surf on. Surf

across it and go down the ladder to reach a new area of Slowpoke Well.

There are two paths in this room that you can surf on. The left one will lead

you to a ledge where you will find a Researcher who will give you the Kings

Rock. The Kings Rock is a rather decent item that makes your opponent Pokemon

occasionally flinch when you use a attack, but its main purpose is to evolve

Poliwhirl and Slowpoke into Politoed and Slowking respectively when you do a

link trade with the King's Rock attached.

The right side has a item ball with TM 18 (Rain Dance). Rain Dance both

increases the power of water moves and makes Thunder 100% accurate.

A rather big route with a bunch of new Pokemon. If you need a electric and

steel Pokemon, you can capture Magnemite now. Another new one is Tauros, a

very strong Normal type Pokemon. Also, if you do no have a Pokemon that can

surf, you might want to get one now. You can also get Miltank on this route

as well (Same Pokemon Whitney uses earlier). Farfetch'd is another new

Pokemon, but it is rather weak so you might only want it for completion.
Outside of fighting trainers, there is not much else to do. Head left to

Once you go on Route 39, a old man named Baoba will approach you. He is the

former warden of the Kanto Safari Zone, and he is setting one up in Johto.

When you are done talking to him, he will give you his number and let you know

when it opens.

You now have several options: You can either go to the MooMoo Ranch for a side

quest, or head straight down to Olivine. The MooMoo ranch is on the very top

of the route, the one with all the Miltank in the front. You can get your

picture taken there if you want.

If you go inside, you will find a sick Miltank. To cure it, you will need to

feed it 5 Oran Berries. Once you do, you will get the Seal Case and the

ability to buy some MooMoo milk for 500p. There is also a invisible PP Up

near the Milktank on the Moomoo ranch.

You can also find TM 60 (Drain Punch) by going directly south of the MooMoo

Ranch and picking up the item ball on the left. There is also a invisible

nugget nearby.

Once you are ready, head south down to Olivine.

Once you walk past the gym, your rival will appear and talk to you for a

little bit and then leave, saying that the gym leader is at the light house.

You can do a couple of things in Olivine. If you go to the house above the

Pokemon Center, you can get the Good Rod. Go down the path next to the

Pokemart and head up and you will find two houses. If you have the seal case,

a girl in the right house will give you a couple of seals. In the house on

the left is a fisherman who will trade you a Voltorb with a Cheri Berry for
a Krabby. You can fish for one with the good rod in Olivine, so they are not

too hard to find.

If you surf on the right side of Olivine, you will find TM 57 (Charge Beam)

in a item ball on a small bit of land.

Once you are ready, head east to the lighthouse.

Sort of a mini-dungeon of sorts, the Olivine Lighthouse is filled to the brim

with trainers. The first time you come, you will not be able to use the

elevator to go to the top, so you will need to take the stairs. One downside

is that it is hard to avoid trainers, so you will need to keep your Pokemon

at top health. If needed, head back to the Pokemon Center if your HP is

getting too low.

On the fourth floor, go left and fight the lass and then go left some more to

find TM87, Swagger. Once you are ready, head outside and you will be on a 3D

ledge. On the left side is a item ball with a Rare Candy in it. Head inside

once you are ready and you will be on the third floor.

On the other side of the third floor, fight the sailor to the right and get

the Ether and continue up to the ladder, and then up the next one up to the

fifth floor. Fight the sailor and continue, and then continue to the right to

the next ladder.

On the top floor, you will meet Jasmine, the Gym leader. She made a brief

cameo in D/P/Pl as well. Like in the originals, she asks you to go to Cianwood

and get the SecretPotion for the Ampharos. Once she is done, she will open the
door and allow you to take the elevator down.

Now head to the Pokemon Center and heal up. Make sure you have a Pokemon that

can surf (If not, you can catch something with your Super Rod or can catch a

Tauros on Route 38). Once you are ready, head to Route 40.

Info: Consider Eustine a warm up for the Cianwood Gym. Its recommended that

your Pokemon are at least lv 24 or so before fighting him. Drowzee is

his biggest pain in the ass, since it has Disable and Hypnosis. Once

it does put you to sleep, he will use Dream Eater. He also has

Confusion, so be careful. Dark, bug and ghost attacks work best, so

use a Pokemon that has bite or shadow ball.

Haunter is his second Pokemon, but is pretty wimpy. It only comes with

Mean Look to lock you into battle, and Lick. Psychic and other Ghost
attacks work best against it.

Finally, there is Electrode. He has screech to greatly lower your

defense, and then Thunder to finish you off. He can also use Sonicboom

to always hit you with 20 damage. Best Pokemon to use is a ground type

with ground moves, like Onix or Gravler.

\____________________________________________________________________________/

Once you beat him, he will run off. There is not much else to do after that.

There is a new cave that leads to several of the new areas of HG/SS, but you

cannot access it at this point. Once you are ready, head to the Cianwood Gym.

Chuck is in the middle, and there are two cliffs on each side. Each cliff has

a bunch of trainers you will need to fight, and sometimes they will block your

way. If they do, you might have to leave the gym so they reset. Once you get

to the top of the left side, press the switch and the water will turn off.

Talk to Chuck and he will fight you

/____________________________________________________________________________\

Boss: Chuck

____________________________________________________________________________

Pokemon:

Primeape lv 29 (Fighting)

Poliwrath lv 31 (Water/Fighting)

____________________________________________________________________________

Info: Even though Chuck may only have two Pokemon, they are both at a very

high level and can be a real pain in the ass if you are under-leveled.
Its recommended that you are at least level 26-28 or above before you

fight him.

His first Pokemon is Primeape, which serves more to annoy you. It uses

Leer to lower your defense, and then Double Team to make it hard to

hit you. For attacks, it can use Rock Slide against fliers to make

quick work of them, and Focus Punch to do massive damage. The trick

to Focus Punch is he needs to not be attacked before he uses it, or

else it misses and he loses his turn. If he is about to use it, use

a attack on him. Flying attacks work best, but it might be hard to

hit him with Rock Slide. Ghost attacks work well for dodging his Focus

Punch move.

Poliwrath, however, is his main fighter. He likes to use Hypnosis to

knock you out, and then use Surf, Body Slam, and Focus Punch to slowly

whittle down your HP. Like Primeape, use a attack before he uses focus

punch and you should be OK. Fortunately, you can use flying Pokemon on

Poliwrath with no major issues, and ghost types work well once again.

Recommended Pokemon include: Pidgeotto at lv 26 or above, Golbat with

Wing Attack at lv 27 or above, Haunter at lv 25 or above, Bayleef at

lv 28 or above. Good attacks to use are Wing Attack, Thunder against

Poliwrath, Razor Leaf (Against Poliwrath).

\____________________________________________________________________________/

Once you beat him, he will give you the Storm Badge (Allows you to use fly
outside of battle and TM01, Focus Punch.

When you leave the gym, Chuck's Wife will give you HM02, Fly. Once you are

ready, fly back to Olivine City.

+============+

Now that you have the SecretPotion from the Cianwood Pharmacy, head to the

lighthouse and take the elevator to the top. Give Jasmine the SecretPotion and

she will give it to the Ampharos and it will flash with light and Jasmine will

return to the gym. Take the elevator back down and head to it. Once you get

to the bottom, you will receive a phone call saying that the Safari Zone west

of Cianwood is now open.

Not much to really do. You see a few trainers come up and talk to you, but in

____________________________________________________________________________

Pokemon:

Magnemite lv 30 (Steel/Electric)

Magnemite lv 30 (Steel/Electric)

Steelix lv 35 (Steel/Ground)

____________________________________________________________________________

Info: Depending on your current team, Jasmine can either be the easiest or

hardest Gym Leader depending on your team. Steel Pokemon are a rather

hard bunch to hit and have few weaknesses, so you need to have a plan.

Fire Pokemon are its main weakness, so if you do not have one, it is

recommended that you go catch a Vulpix/Growlithe on Route 36, the

route that is south of Ecruteak. Also, you will want to have a Ground

Pokemon for her two Magnemite, such as Onix or Gravler.

First up are her two Magnemite. They are identical in level and in

moves, so there is not much difference. Usually, they like to use

Supersonic to confuse you, and then Thunder Wave to paralyze. Then

she will use Thunderbolt or Sonic Boom against you. The best way to

counter this is to have a ground Pokemon, like the ones mentioned

above and have them use moves like Magnitude. Fire also works well

against her, so Quilava/Flareon/Vulpix/Growlithe are all good ones

to look at.

Finally, there is her Steelix, which is her worst Pokemon. Not only

does it have high defense, but it is at a very high level at lv 35.

It usually likes to use screech to lower your defense, and then use

Sandstorm to damage any non steel/rock/ground Pokemon, and after that

use Iron Tail and Rock Throw over and over. Your best bet is a fire

or water Pokemon, since his defense is too high to take advantage of

his fighting or ground weakness. Surf works extremely well, so the

starters Croconaw and Quilava are both good ones to use.

Recommended Pokemon include: Onix/Gravler at lv 30, Quilava/Vulpix/

Growlithe at lv 30, Croconaw (For Steelix) at lv 30. Any Pokemon with

Magnitude for the Magnemite, and any Pokemon with Surf or fire moves

for Steelix.

\____________________________________________________________________________/

Once you beat her, you will get the Mineral Badge, which allows you to use

Pokemon up to lv 70. She also gives you TM23, Iron Tail.

Now that you have the Mineral Badge, head back to Ecruteak and head east to

Like before, there is not too much you can do at the moment in Mt. Mortar,

so lets skip it for now. Your real goal is to swim east over to the other

side. Once you swim over to the middle isle, you will see a tree that can

be cut down, some Apricorns, and Suicune. As soon as you cut it down, Suicune
will escape and Eustine will come talk to you and leave. Once you are ready,

keep swimming east and you will find some grass and a few trainers. There

are a few new things you can capture, such as Spearow in all versions and

Mankey in HeartGold. Keep going east and you will eventually reach Mahogany

Town.

* Note that you can only buy the above once you clear the Goldenrod Radio

Tower later in the game.

A rather small Town, there is not much you can do at this point. The strange

shop above the gym is selling TinyMushrooms for 500p, Pokeballs for 200p, and

Potions for 300p. Considering how far you are, most of those items are fairly

low level. Also notice the weird tree to the right of the shop, that becomes

important later.

You also cannot enter the gym at this point, so leave that alone for now. If

you try to leave east, a man will offer to sell you a RageCandyBar for 300p.

The main difference is instead of being a item that restores health, it is

now a key item that you use much later in the game. You won't be able to go

east for some time, so the only way to go is North to route 43.

A rather long route. You can either go through the tall grass at the

beginning, or be forced to pay a 1000p toll if you go through the gatehouse.

This is a good place for EXP, not only from the massive amount of trainers

here, but the wild Pokemon. You can now capture a Girafarig, a normal/psychic

Hybrid that has resistance to ghost attacks, and Venonat, a Bug/Poison

Pokemon.

Keep going north until you hit the Lake of Rage.

When you get to the Lake of Rage, you will find that it is raining rather

hard, and there are several people at the shore looking out towards the lake.

You will then see a moving Red Gyarados in the water. Use surf and head to

where it is at and battle it.

The Red Gyarados is unique, since it is one of the few encounters that will

always be Shiny. It is at a rather respectable lv 30 and will use its special

Intimidate ability when you first encounter it. It knows Leer, Twister, and

Dragon Rage, so be careful. You will want to bring some Great Balls, and want

to lower it as low as possible. Even though it is raining, be careful about

using Thunder, since it can knock it out almost immediately due to its dual

Water/Flying types.

Once you do beat the Red Gyarados, you will get the Red Scale, a item you

can trade with Mr. Pokemon north of Cherrygrove for a EXP Share. Head back to

shore and you will see a familiar man with a Dragonite looking at a sign. He

is Lance, the Elite Four member from Red/Blue/Yellow/FireRed/LeafGreen. He

will mention that the Magikarp of this lake were forced to evolve, and there

should be something in Mahogany that is causing it. He will then fly off

toward the weird shop in Mahogany. You can either follow him, or make a quick

stop at Cherrygrove and get the EXP Share, since it will be useful for

the battles ahead.

Head back to Mahogany and head to the shop. You will see Lance tearing the

place apart looking for the entrance switch. He will then find it under the

big statue. Once you are ready, head under to the Rockets Hideout.

______________________________________________________________________________

One thing you will notice as soon as you enter is the giant Persian statues

on the walls. You have no choice but to walk in front of the first one,

which triggers two rocket grunts. The first one has a lv 17 Drowsee and the

Second will have a lv 16 Zubat and a Rattata at lv 18. There are a bunch more

on this floor and each will activate a Rocket Grunts. You can turn them off,

however. Follow the path west a little bit until you can go down, and then

head down until you find a scientist near a PC. Battle him (He has three lv

20 Magnemite), and Press A on the PC he was near to turn off the statues.

There are two possible paths to the stairs going down: you can either go east

and then down and then right to find a teleporter (Teleporter sends you back

to the beginning), and the stairs going down. The second way is to re-trace

your steps back to where the Persian statues are, and then go west until you

find a Rocket Grunt. Beat the grunt and then go down. You will then notice
a interesting new trap: Various wild Pokemon now appear on certain floors.

You can find either Voltorb, Geodude, or Koffing. You can either run, beat

them, or capture them.

Once you are on the other side of the traps, you will find the same teleport

and stairs mentioned earlier. Go down to B2.

______________________________________________________________________________

______

B2

______________________________________________________________________________

When you head downstairs, you will find Lance who will then heal your Pokemon.

There is not much you can do on this floor for now: The door to the generator

is shut for now, and there are a few grunts on this floor. Keep going right

until you find the stairs for B3.

______________________________________________________________________________

______

B3

______________________________________________________________________________

When you first enter B3, Lance will just get done interrogating a Rocket

Grunt, who gives him the first part of the password for a door that is needed

later on. You will need to find the second code, which is on the same floor.
In the big computer room in the center, fight the female rocket grunt (She has

a lv 18 Ekans and a lv 18 Gloom). When you beat her, she will give you the

second code

Before continuing, lets get some of the items in this room. There is a item

ball on the left side of the center room that has TM 49 (Snatch). The

right side of the center room has a Full Heal. Going to the lower left corner

of the room has a scientist and a rocket grunt as well as a X Special and

Protein.

Once you are ready, go to the upper right corner to find the staircase going

up a alternate route on B2.

______________________________________________________________________________

______________________________________________________________________________

For now, keep going left and you will eventually have to fight a rocket grunt.

He has a 3 lv 17 Rattata. Head down the stairs to end up on a alternate part

of B3. There is another staircase further down that leads to a room with TM46.

Once you are ready, head east toward the door. When you get close, your Rival

will appear and mention that he battled with Lance and lost pretty badly. He

then runs off without fighting you. If your rival did not come up to you, that

means that you do not have both codes.

Once you are ready, press A on the door and it will open. The man inside

presents himself as Giovanni, but in reality he is Petrel, a Team Rocket

Executive. He will then fight you

____________________________________________________________________________

Pokemon:

Zubat lv 22 (Poison/Flying)

Koffing lv 22 (Poison)

Raticate lv 24 (Normal)

____________________________________________________________________________

Info: Petrel is only slightly more tougher then your average Rocket Grunt,

so he should not be too much of a problem. His Zubat has Astonish,

Bite, Wing Attack, and Confuse Ray, so use a Pokemon with Thunder or

Ice attacks against him (If you got Blizzard from the Goldenrod

Department Store, that works well). Psychic Pokemon might want to be

careful because of Astonish and Bite.

His Koffing can be annoying, since it has Smog, Smokescreen, Assurance

and Selfdestruct. Assurance can be very powerful if your Pokemon is

too fast, since it does double damage if Koffing was attacked that

turn. It likes to use Selfdestruct when it gets close to dying, so

finish it off quickly. Its levitate means that ground type attacks do

not work well on it, so Psychic moves are the best.

Finally, there is Raticate. It has Hyper Fang, Sucker Punch, Scary

Face, and Crunch. Hyper Fang can be deadly against lower level Pokemon

so be careful. Fighting moves work best, although be careful about

using Ghost Pokemon, since Crunch and Sucker Punch are both dark type

moves.

\____________________________________________________________________________/

Once you beat him, he will run off, and his Murkrow will talk to you and then

run off as well. You now have to tail the Murkrow back to the door on B3 that

was locked earlier. Once you do, it will say the password and then run off.

As soon as you do this, Rocket Admin Arianna and a Grunt will show up to

challenge you, but Lance will show up as well and aid you in a double battle.

Pokemon:

Arbok lv 25 (Poison)

Gloom lv 25 (Poison/Grass)

Murkrow lv 27 (Dark/Flying)

Drowzee lv 18 (Psychic)

Grimer lv 20 (Poison)

____________________________________________________________________________

Info: A rather interesting battle. Arianna has rather high level Pokemon,

but Lance is about twice as strong as you currently are, having a lv

40 Dragonite that can wipe out most of Arianna's and the Grunt's
teams. For the most part, you can just sit back and let Lance do most

of the work while you get the EXP. Only downside is the Dragonite

likes to use Fly most of the time, so it takes two turns to use. It

will also occasionally use Thunder as well.

As for the Pokemon, her Arbok has Glare, Crunch, Wrap and Poison

Sting. The only one that might cause trouble is Glare, which paralyzes

you. Gloom has Sweet Scent, Mega Drain, Acid, and Sleep Powder, so it

likes to put you to sleep most of the time. Murkow has Night Shade,

Wing Attack, Astonish and Pursuit. A good ground Pokemon like Gravler

or Onix can take out Arbok and Gloom (Although be careful of Gloom

and her grass moves). A flyer can also work well on Gloom as well.

Murkrow can be taken out with electric or ice attacks.

As for the grunt, he is more for support. His Drowsee has Disable,

Confusion, Headbutt, and Poison Gas, while his Grimer has Mud-Slap,

Disable, Minimize, and Sludge. They like to use Disable a lot, so

don't be surprised if you have to use other moves most of the time.

Sludge and Poison Gas also Poison, so be careful of that.

\____________________________________________________________________________/

After you beat them, Arianna and the rest of the grunts then abandon the base.

Lance then tells you that you have to destroy the generator by knocking out

the Electrode that are powering it.

The Electrode are all at lv 23, and can either be knocked out or caught. If

you run from battle, they will still be there. Once you knock out or capture
them, Lance will thank you and give you HM05, Whirlpool, as a reward. He will

then mention his battle with your Rival, and then walk off.

Once you head outside, you will see that the weird tree has been damages and

now shows the remains of a broken Transmitter. Head to the Pokemon Center and

heal, and then head to the gym.

While similar to his old Gym, Pryce's layout is now sectioned off into three

different rooms. Fortunately, it is not as hard as the Snowpoint Gym, so you

should not have as much trouble against him.

Anywho, as far as the puzzles go, it involves sliding ice. Similar to the

Snowpoint gym in that you have to slide in a particular direction to get to

your destination. The trick is the ice blocks, which you usually have to press

together to make it solid enough to hold you. For your convenience, here is

the solutions for each room

Room 1:

-Go up on the ice and slide until the ice block slides up against the second

one. From there, go left, up, and then right and then head up and go through

the door.
Room 2:

-There are two trainers, you have to fight the one on the left to continue,

but you can avoid the right one as long as you do not mess up the puzzle.

Go to the left, fight the trainer, and then line yourself up with the ice

block and slide into it. Once you are stopped, go up and through the door.

-In the third room, go to the left and fight the trainer and then line

yourself up with the ice block and slide into it. Go up, fight the trainer,

then go right, left, up, right, up, right, up and fight the trainer, left,

and then up.

/____________________________________________________________________________\

Boss: Pryce

____________________________________________________________________________

Pokemon:

Seel lv 30 (Water)

Dewgong lv 32 (Water/Ice)

Piloswine lv 34 (Ice/Ground)

____________________________________________________________________________

Info: Pryce has not changed much from his GSC days, only being about 3

higher then his old team. His moves have not changed much either,

although his Pokemon no longer all have Icy Wind as a main attack.

Anywho, his Seel has Icy Wind, Rest, Snore, and Hail. Icy Wind lowers

your speed each time it hits, so be careful not to have it lowered too

much. He will use Rest when Seel gets low on HP, and then Snore to
damage you while sleeping. Snore also has a high chance of flinching,

so be careful. Hail lasts several turns and hits any Pokemon that is

not a Ice type Pokemon, so it will hit Seel as well. Electric Pokemon

work best here.

Dewgong is similar to Seel, but has much stronger moves. it has Rest,

Sleep Talk, Aurora Beam, and Ice Shard. Auora Beam and Ice Shard are

both strong Ice Type attacks, while Sleep Talk allows it to use one

of those two moves while the user is asleep. Once again, Electric

attacks work well against Pryce, but Fighting can also cause some

serious damage.

Finally, there is Piloswine, the powerhouse of his team. It is holding

a Sitrus Berry, which will restore 25% of its HP when it gets low.

Its moves include Blizzard, Ice Fang, Mud Bomb, and Hail. All are very

powerful moves, and can be hard to take down if your Pokemon are

underleveled. Piloswine is weak to fighting, steel, fire, water, and

grass moves, so moves such as Surf, Mega Drain, Iron Tail, any

fighting moves, and Fire Blast are all good ones. Be careful about

using Fire and Grass types, since they are weak to his attack.

It is recommended that your Pokemon are at least lv 30 and that some

of them know Thunder, Surf, and fighting moves.

\____________________________________________________________________________/

Once you beat Pryce he will give Glacier Badge and TM07 (Hail). You can also

use Whirlpool outside of battle now, so the HM Lance gave you earlier will
work.

Once you head outside, you will get a phone call saying Goldenrod has been

taken over. Go to the Pokemon Center and heal, and then fly over there.

When you get to Goldenrod, you will find that most of the places are sealed

Rocket Grunts will be blocking the stairs. In order to get to the upper

floors of the Radio Tower, you will need to dress like a Grunt. Head to the

underground from the Game Corner and go right, and you will find a Rocket

that will dress you up in a uniform.

Head back to the Radio Tower and talk to the grunt that is near the stairs.

He will then move, but your rival will come and reveal who you really are.

After that, the grunt will fight you: He has two lv 24 Raticates, so it

should be pretty easy. Once you beat him, the grunt will run upstairs and

your rival will run off. Make sure your Pokemon are all healed up and then

head up the Radio Tower.

____________________________________________________________________________

Info: Possible one of the few times in the game where you will face a full

6 Pokemon, Petrel can be seen as a benchmark of sorts. All his Koffing

have Sludge, Smokescreen, and Selfdestruct for when your HP gets low.

Best way to take them out is to use a Psychic move, such as Confusion

or Psybeam, or even Psychic if you have it. Weezing is similar to the

Koffing, but a little tougher. Watch out if any of the Koffing use
selfdestruct, since it will greatly damage your Pokemon. You may want

to bring a few potions and revives just in case.

\____________________________________________________________________________/

Once you beat Petrel, he will give you the Basement Key for the area of the

____________________________________________________________________________

Info: Its been awhile since you last fought your rival, so this might be a

good chance to test your skills. His Pokemon are 30-34, so your

should be around or above that range, lowest you should have is lv 28.

Interesting enough though, he will have a Feraligatr if you have

chosen a Quilava, whereas choosing anything else will only have him

using the first evolution of his starter and not the final one.

First up is Haunter, which has Curse, Mean Look, Confuse Ray, and

Shadow Ball. Similar to Morty's you will want to switch out if he

uses Curse, although it might be hard if you use Mean Look. Confuse

Ray can be a gigantic pain in the ass, and Shadow Ball is always a

tough move against your Pokemon. Normal Pokemon with Psychic or

Ghost moves work well, as well as dark attacks such as bite.

Second is Golbat, who has Air Cutter, Confuse Ray, Bite, and Astonish.

It has flying, dark, and ghost attacks, so be careful of using grass

psychic, ghost, or fighting Pokemon. Psychic or rock moves take it

down real quick.

Magnemite is his lowest level Pokemon, and it has Spark, Supersonic,

Sonicboom, and Thunderwave. Similar to his other two Pokemon, he can

confuse you with Supersonic. SonicBoom always does 20 damage, and

Spark is a electric move. Fire, ground, and fighting attacks are super

effective against it.

Sneasel is his newest Pokemon, one you might have found out about

earlier if you got the Shuckle from the man in Cianwood. Its attacks

include Faint Attack, Quick Attack, Fury Swipes, and Icy Wind. All of

the attacks are Psychical attacks, so a Pokemon with high defense will

work fine. Icy Wind is a special attack, but it will not do as much

because of Sneasel's low special attack.

Finally, there is his starters. Quilava goes down with ground and

water attacks like surf, Bayleef goes down with Ice, fire, and flying

moves, and Feraligatr goes down with electric and grass attacks.

\____________________________________________________________________________/

After you beat your rival, he will mention Lance and then leaves. Anywho, now

that you have taken care of your rival there are two grunts in the room that

you have to beat. After that, go down and then left, and then in the lower

left corner you will find a item ball with a Smoke Ball item (If you attach it

to one of your Pokemon, it allows you to escape from wild battles easier).

There is also a few bandits in this area, usually with more fire Pokemon like

Growlithe and Poison Pokemon like Koffing.

Your main goal for this room is to get to the center switch room. There are

three levers on the north wall: A red switch, a green switch, and a blue

switch. In order to get to the next area, you will need to press the Red

switch first, then the blue one, and then the green. Once you have done all of
that, head to the right shutter and then go down. When you are near the door,

you will face a Rocket Grunt with two Glooms. Beat her and continue through

the door.

In the next room, you will find that the path is rather straightforward. Along

the way, you will find a Ultra Ball, Max Ether, and TM82 (Sleep Talk) in

itemballs. Once you get to the end of the path and fight all the Rocket

Grunts, you will find the real Radio Tower Manager. Talk to him and he will

give you a Keycard to the closed shutter on the 3rd Floor of the Radio Tower.

Head up the stairs on your right and you will find a item ball with a Amulet

Coin, a item that will double your money earned when you attach it to one of

your Pokemon and that Pokemon fights. You will find that there are several

Machoke and boxes blocking your way to several of the other items, so take

the elevator up to the first floor of the Goldenrod Department Store. Heal

your Pokemon at the Pokemon Center, and go back to the Radio Tower.

\\__________________________________________________________________________//

Now that you are back in the Radio Tower, head back to the 3rd Floor. If you

have not, fight any grunts you have not fought yet for the EXP, since you will

need all the levels you can get. Open the shutters on the third floor and

fight the rocket that is guarding the stairs. Head up and you will find

Executive Proton, ready to fight you again.

/____________________________________________________________________________\

Boss: Rocket Executive Proton

____________________________________________________________________________

Pokemon:

Golbat lv 28 (Poison/Flying)

Weezing lv 33 (Poison)

____________________________________________________________________________

Info: If you had no trouble against your rival and Petrel, then Proton will

be a cakewalk. Golbat has Wing Attack, Confuse Ray, Leech Life, and

Bite, all very standard for a Golbat. Weezing has Sludge, Double Hit,

Smokescreen and Smog. Both are very weak against psychic attacks, so

Psybeam or Confusion work well. Golbat is also weak against Ice and

Rock moves.

\____________________________________________________________________________/

Once you do beat him, there is a item ball with a Ultra Ball that is right

next to him. Head up the stairs and you will find Arianna, who will also have

a rematch with you.

/____________________________________________________________________________\

Boss: Rocket Executive Arianna

____________________________________________________________________________

Pokemon:

Arbok lv 32 (Poison)

Vileplume lv 32 (Grass/Poison)

Murkrow lv 32 (Dark/Flying)
____________________________________________________________________________

Info: This will be the first and last time you face Arianna outside of a

double battle, so it will be a interesting one. Her Pokemon have

leveled up about 5-7 levels since the Mahogany Town Rocket Hideout, so

yours should be around lv 30 or so.

First, her Arbok has Glare, Crunch, Wrap, and Poison Sting. All are

fairly weak attacks, although glare can be annoying since it paralyzes

you. Psychic and Ground attacks will knock it out quickly.

Next up is Vileplume, her strongest Pokemon. It has Sweet Scent, Acid,

Mega Drain, and Sleep Powder. Sweet Scent makes it so your Pokemon

are easier to it, and Sleep Powder is a annoying move that puts your

Pokemon to sleep for a few turns (Unless you are still Paralyzed from

Arbok). Mega Drain is her strongest attack, and will recover some of

her HP. Flying, Psychic, Fire, and Ice moves are all the best ones

to use.

Finally, there is Murkrow. It has Night Shade, Wing Attack, Astonish,

and Pursuit. Nothing special here, ice, electric, and rock moves are

all very effective against it.

\____________________________________________________________________________/

If your Pokemon are low on health, you might want to head back to the Pokemon

Center real quick and heal up. Once you are ready, take the elevator up to the

top floor of the Radio Tower. Head around to the north side to find a guy
standing there. His name is Archer and he is the current leader of Team

Rocket. After talking to him and learning his true motives for attacking the

radio tower, he will fight you.

/____________________________________________________________________________\

Boss: Rocket Executive Archer

____________________________________________________________________________

Pokemon:

Houndour lv 35 (Dark/Fire)

Koffing lv 35 (Poison)

Houndoom lv 38 (Dark/Fire)

____________________________________________________________________________

Info: The new Big Boss of Team Rocket, this is also the first and last time

you will fight Archer. His team is lv 35-38, so you will want your

Pokemon to be no lower then 33 or so. Unlike the other few executives,

his Pokemon have a few more powerful attacks then normal, so it will

be a little different.

His Houndour has Faint Attack, Fire Fang, Crunch, and Roar. Fire Fang

and Crunch are both very powerful moves, so make sure your Pokemon has

a high defense. Roar can drag out another Pokemon, so switch them out

if he drags out a Pokemon with low defense or a psychic/ghost/grass/

ice Pokemon. Houndour is weak against Fighting, Ground, Rock, and

Water attacks, so moves like Rock Throw, Magnitude, and Surf are all

good ones to use.

Next up is Koffing. It has Sludge, Smokescreen, Tackle, and Haze. Haze

is the only unique move that resets any positive or negative status

increases or decreases you or Koffing might have gained. This acts as

sort of a double edged sword, since any uses of Smokescreen can be

negated because of this. Otherwise, use the same strategy you have

used against Koffing in the past.

Finally, there is Houndoom, which while being a more powerful and

higher level version of Houndour, actually has worse attacks. It has

Faint Attack, Fire Fang, Bite, and Smog. Take it out with the same

moves you used against Houndour.

\____________________________________________________________________________/

Once you beat him, he will disband team rocket once more and all the grunts

will leave the Radio Tower. The manager of the radio tower will come in and

thank you and give you the Rainbow or Silver Wing, depending on what version

you have.

There are a couple of things you can do while you are in the Radio Tower. If

you talk to the woman that was near the closed shutters on the 3rd floor, she

will give you TM11 (Sunny Day). If you head up on the 4th Floor where the

Radio Booth is and talk to DJ Mary, she will give you the Brightpowder hold

item. Also, you can get the Blue Card for the Radio Show Quiz on the second

floor from the girl at the radio booth.

Anywho, even though you have the Rainbow or Silver Wing, you cannot get Lugia

or Ho-Oh yet, not until you beat the last gym leader. Fly back to Mahogany
Town and you will find that things have, for the most part, gone back to

normal. The shop where the Rocket Hideout was is now selling normal items, and

you can now head East onto Route 44.

There is a bunch of trainers on this route, all good for EXP. You will also

notice that there is not as much grass on this route, so it might be hard

to find some of the Pokemon listed above. There are two paths on this route:

A upper route and a lower route. The lower route has more trainer, while the

upper has less. Head east and then head up the stairs to the Ice Path.

Similar to Pryce's Gym, but is a little straightforward for the first few ice

parts. When you get to the big ice puzzle, go these directions:
- Up, left, up, left, down, left, up, right.

Once you are past that puzzle, you will find another ice puzzle you must

go through. This time, it is for HM07, Waterfall. To get through that puzzle,

the solution is:

- Right, down, left, up, left, down, left, up, right

Once you are done, head up the stairs and to the right to find a ladder

leading down.

Second room has a boulder puzzle. Going counterclockwise:

- First boulder you press up until you cannot press it anymore, and then go

around right until you are on top of the boulder and press it to the right

and then down into the hole.

- Second hole should have it down one, and then over left until it is near

the hole and then go above it and press down and then right into the hole.

- Third hole, you go to the right and find a boulder above a small ice path

and push it to the left and then down until you cannot press it anymore,

and then press it right, and then down three times, and then go around it

and press it up once, and then press it left until it goes into the hole.

- Fourth Hole, you press the boulder up twice, and then right once, and then

up twice, then you go around on the other side and you press it to the right

twice then head around and press it up, and then to the left until it is in
the hole.

After that, go down the ladder near the last hole to B2.

Ah, Blackthorn City. There is not much you can do at this point. There is a

house near the Pokemart which has the Move Deleter, the Move Re learner (Still

requires a Heart Scale), Grandma Wilma who will teach your Pokemon Draco

Meteor if they are the Dragon type, and a man who will teach your starters

Frenzy Plant, Hydro Cannon, and Blast Burn if they like you enough.

There is also a guy in a house that will trade you a Dodrio for a female

Dragonair, which is a bit of a ripoff, but still a option if you want one for

your Pokedex.

There is also a house near the Ice Cave that has a woman inside that will

give your top Pokemon a Effort Ribbon if its EVs are all maxed out.

You can also go south to Route 45, but make sure you bring a Pokemon that can

fly. It is good EXP, and has a few rare Pokemon.

For now, lets go explore Route 45 and see what it has.

Now that you are on the other side of Route 46, you will find a few new

trainers to battle. They are fairly low level however, so you will have no

trouble with them. You can also access the other side of the Dark Cave from

this side, and find a climbable rock wall that you won't be able to access

until much later in the game. If you keep going south, you will end up in

the part of Route 46 that was in the beginning of the game. The Pokemon on

this route are the same Pokemon from earlier in the game, so there is no

difference.
Once you are ready, head back to Blackthorn City via flying and and go north

OK, here is how it works: There is a platform you must go on. The middle one

switches the direction around when it is not connected to anything, and the

two arrows make it move in that direction. For the first one, you will want

to flip it up right and then press the right arrow. On the pathway, there

are several trainers you must fight.

On the second one, you have to twist it around until its non-ledge end is on

the right. You can use the middle portion to change the direction the arrows

will go, and then slide it around in the right way.

Once you get past the final one, you will find the Gym Leader, Clair.

Pokemon:

Dragonair lv 38 (Dragon)
Dragonair lv 38 (Dragon)

Gyarados lv 38 (Water/Flying)

Kingdra lv 41 (Water/Dragon)

____________________________________________________________________________

Info: Ah Clair...She is many things: The last Gym Leader in Johto, the last

Badge before you have full access to lv 100 Pokemon, and so on. She is

also one of the only Gym Leaders that has a team change from GSC (Her

third Dragonair is replaced with a Gyarados). Because of that, she is

not as weak to Ice attacks like she once was, but now has a Pokemon

that is weak to Electric and one that is weak to Dragon attacks.

The first Pokemon are her two Dragonairs. They are both similar in

level, and both have Dragon Pulse, Thunder Wave, and Slam. The only

difference is one has Fire Blast and the other has Aqua Tail. Dragon

Pulse is a very strong Dragon move with 90 base damage. Thunder Wave

Paralyzes your Pokemon, and Fire Blast and Aqua Tail are both very

strong Fire and Water attacks respectively. Ice attacks are your best

friend in this battle, since it is the only thing the two Dragonair

are weak to. A Ice Pokemon caught from the Ice Path or the TM you got

from Pryce are both good to use against them.

Next up is old favorite Gyarados. It has Dragon Rage, Twister, Bite,

and Dragon Pulse. Dragon Rage always takes off 40HP every time it is

used, no more or no less. Twister is a somewhat weak dragon type move,

but does more if the Pokemon is using Fly or Bounce. Gyarados is 4x

weak to electric attacks, so Thunderbolt or Thunder are both very good

moves to use.

Finally, there is Kingdra. It is her highest level Pokemon at lv 41

and is holding a Sitrus Berry. As for attacks, it knows Hydro Pump,

Dragon Pulse, Hyper Beam, and Smokescreen. Kingdra is a tough Pokemon

to beat since its only weakness is Dragon attacks. If you bought a

Dratini earlier from the Goldenrod Game Corner and it knows Dragon

| attacks, use those. Otherwise, use your strongest Pokemon against it.
