Description

I want Sasha and Malia and your daughters and sons to grow up in an America where both work and family are a part of the American Dream, and where that Dream is available to all. So I hope you look closely at the ideas in this booklet and let us know what you think. Together, we can change America. Sincerely, Barack Obama

Dear Mr. President, I am a mother of 3 beautiful girls. I went to school for Medical Assisting, finished and have not been about to find a job in my field. So I have decided to go back to school to finish my degree in Business. It will only take a year to finish. My problem is now I have so many loans from the previous school that I don't know if I can do this. I can't find a good job. I work in child care and have been for almost 5 years and now that the rate of minimum wage has increased, I received a pay raise. I now get paid 7.25 an hour. I can't keep supporting 3 kids on this. And I can't find anything better with out a good education. Please tell me what it is that I can do? We are drowning! I want stability for my children. I want them to have a better life than I did. I can't help their father left. Please tell me how I can get a good education, and get a good job on the wages I receive, plus the payments I now have to make?

Hello President Obama, I am a working mother of 2 and a full time student. My education loans ar about $35,000 and I still have a year to go. I have not qualified for any grants because I am married. There is no way this amount will get paid. Or at least for 20 years. I cannot afford this and still pay bills. Are there any grants available for me? Angela Martin Florida

Hello President Obama, I would like to know what is going to happen with unemployed workers that are/going planning to go back to school? I am a 27 unemployed working that was getting benefits until the cut me off without notice. I started school June 8th, I did my payment request on the June 15th as I am suppost to, informed TWC that I started school. I thought I was doing the right thing by informing them about this, but I wasn't. In return i was denied my unemployment due to the fact that i have returned to school. The reason for their decision was: "Our investigation found you are unavailable for work because you are going to school during the same hours as your regular work and you will not quit school to go to work. Mr. President I don't have a job, and have not had a job in the passed 4 months, not that I'm not looking for one, or don't want one, but its hard to try to find one. I am more than willing to work and take care of my home and not have to draw unemployment but unfortunatly that has not happened. I decieded to go back to school becasue I couldn't find a job, and I didn't enjoy just sitting at home and doing nothing to improve my life. Now my family and I are being penalized for actions that i have taken that TWC does not agree with. I have family in another city of Texas that get their unemployment, are in school and also have help from the WIA Workforce Investment Act Program. Is there any help out there that I can get so that I can get my unemployment back or help to pay for college and my bills that are not going anywhere? Thank you Flora Yvette Brown in Texas

Mr. & Mrs. Obama, Never in my 20 years of voting has a politician (and his wife!) moved me to tears. I was blown away last night by Michelle's speech and after watching you thank your wife and talk to your little girls via satellite, I said to my friends on Twitter "Now THAT'S family values!" Like Barack's mother, I am a single mom also. I am struggling just to stay afloat and every day when I wake up, I wonder "is this going to be the day I drown?" See, on top of being a single mom and trying to survive in this atrocious economy, I am also living with a mental illness. Life is difficult enough coping with a mental illness as it is but when you add gas prices, unemployment, and food prices on top of it, I don't know how much more I can take. But you give me hope, Mr. Obama. When you talk about your plans for change, I believe you! You have connected with the American people in a way that we have been starving and aching for. For the first time, we really feel like someone is listening. Earlier this week, I lost my job. Again. This is the second job I've lost this year. I was working at home because I could no longer afford to commute and now that I don't have any job at all, I can't afford the gas to go on interviews. I've tried starting my own business but no one can afford to hire me as a virtual legal assistant. Due to a vicious custody war my daughter's father has waged on me, I am being forced to take my daughter to a school 30 hours away from my home. That's 120 miles and 2 hours of driving every day. My attorney begged the court to let me enroll my child in the local school and when he refused, we asked the State to help me with transportation and they refused. The father is not paying child support either because DHHS interfered in that too. So what am I supposed to do? Get her to school and lose my house? Or pay my rent and lose my daughter because she's truant? On top of that, I have an ex-husband who got away with kidnapping my son and I went a year without seeing him because I couldn't find him and I couldn't afford to hire an attorney. I worked in a law firm for a while and one of the attorneys there helped me at least get visitation but when I lost that job, I lost my representation. So when I showed up in court to represent myself, I didn't get a chance to speak, the Judge signed off on the order the other attorney submitted and I was stuck with a child support order that is 50% of my income. PLUS my ex-husband slipped a clause in there making me pay for his transportation costs when HE'S the one that moved 3 hours away to another state. When I refused to pay him that, he used his connections as a probation officer to have my visits with my son suspended and I didn't see him for another 4 months. (See, after he took off with my son, my son went downhill fast and was admitted to the hospital for being suicidal and was later charged with a felony for breaking into a friend's house. His juvenile probation officer is a friend of my ex's.) I won't even begin to tell you the story of my 17 year old daughter and how, thanks to DHHS ignoring my cries for help, she ended up being a pregnant runaway and was living in a foster home with her boyfriend who isn't the child's father (he's the foster dad's son) but she plans to marry. So that's just a fraction of the disastrous experiences I have had to battle when it comes to our government and our courts. Trying to do all of this with no money and a mental illness is going to kill me. Literally and figuratively. I'm not stupid person, sir. I have a 143 IQ and I've wanted to be a lawyer since I was 7 years old but after being removed from an abusive, alcoholic father's home, my college plans were shot and I ended up being a mother at 19 so law school was no longer an option. I "settled" for being a paralegal but couldn't afford to finish my degree. Obviously, I really care about your plans for women and families. Our family is just one of millions that needs your help. We're counting on you for change. I am going with my gut and my heart (and against my racist father's ignorant rants) and I will be casting my vote for you. Please don't let my family down. But something tells me you won't.

Mr. Obama, Day Care costs have gone up at three times the rate of inflation. Full time child care for 3-month old twins now costs over $40,000 annually in Massachusetts. This is on par with the cost of higher education. Once you account for income tax, a women must earn over $60K to afford to send her twins to child care -- and that's just to break even. In Europe, public education begins with pre-school at age 3. In this country, only private child care or pre-school is available until a child is 5-6 years old. What do you propose to address this issue of rising child care costs? I would like to see public education available at age 3 and a major tax break for families with children under the age of 6.

Obama, Thank you for your plan to continue preventative support for pregnancy and increase funding to planned parenthood! As a woman who did not have healthcare for almost 5 years, I could not have survived without programs like planned parenthood and i know i'm not the only one, these programs do great work, thank you for supporting them!

efayew, I don't think you completely understood cganiere's concerns based on your suggestion. Here is another perspective that I submit for your thoughtful consideration: Suppose that there are two different gardens. In the first garden, everything that you plant, water, and harvest is distributed by a computer that tries to determine the best possible allocation of the food. In the second garden, the food that you grow is ultimately yours and you are allowed to eat it, trade it, give it to the needy, or feed your family with it. Now suppose these gardens are the food supplies for two different nations. Which nation do you think would have the most food? Which nation would you want to live in?

I do understand your concern, but imagine how we feel in Washington, DC! We pay taxes to benefit you and the whole world (foreign aid), but we don't even have representation in Congress. Work for Statehood for us, and we will work in an Obama Administration to be sure the burden on all of us is lightened.

Working families are taxed to pay the federal employees. It is over taxation that causes the struggle that many have. Open each utility bill - there are a variety of taxes. Look at your paycheck and imagine the income tax withholding disappearing. If the federal government were to shrink to its 1979 size we could eliminate the income tax. How many "struggling" families would continue to struggle after a 10-25% take home pay increase? The Federal Government has "enumerated powers" it is precisely the overstepping of these bounds that has created a government too expensive for working class people. Our politicians try to mitigate the problems with $3 TRILLION government by giving back a billion here or there.

Federal workers are human beings, too. Why wouldn't you want them to benefit?
