Tandan kosong kelapa sawit (TKKS) yang tersedia melimpah merupakah bahan baku selulosa yang bisa dimanfaatkan untuk
pembuatan bioplastik komposit. Pemanfaatan TKKS menjadi bioplastik sawit akan meningkatkan nilai tambah TKKS,
meningkatkan pendapatan petani dan pengusaha sawit. Di sisi lain, bioplastik bisa menjadi solusi alternatif untuk mengatasi
permasalah sampah plastik. Penelitian ini telah berhasil mengisolasi dan memodifikasi selulosa dari TKKS dengan kandungan
selulosa >90%. Selulosa yang sudah termodifikasi selanjutnya dibuat komposit dengan biopolimer dan plastisizer menjadi
bioplastik. Selulosa TKKS bisa ditambahkan di dalam komposit bioplastik hingga dari 5% - 50%. Selulosa meningkatkan kuat tarik
bioplastik namun menurunkan elastisitas bioplastik. Bioplastik sawit sudah bisa dibuat menjadi bijih bioplastik, lembaran
bioplastik, kantong bioplastik sawit dan prototipe produk dengan teknik injection molding. Bioplastik sawit telah diuji coba
ketahanannya terhadap jamur dengan metode ASTM G21 dan uji biodegradasi dengan metode ISO 14885-1.
