CATFISHFARMER'S

HANDBOOK

ATFIHFARMER'S
HANDBOOK
This handbook gives the basic information new catfishfarmers need to get through their first production seasonwith minimum problems. Although there is no guaranteeagainst a catastrophic loss, the new catfish farmer cancertainly reduce the chances of such a loss by followingthe production methods outlined. The information is presented in outline form with fewtechnical details on why something will or will not work. Ifyou need additional or more technical information on aspecific subject, refer to the section "Suggested Reading"for a list of books, articles, bulletins, and other publicationson catfish farming.Catfish farming is much more than just stocking a pondwith fish, feeding them, and then reaping the profits a fewmonths later. It requires a large investment and carries ahigh risk. Intensive catfish culture requires managementalmost 24 hours a day during most of the year, and unlessyou are willing to provide this type of management, youshould look at another type of enterprise. The information provided in this handbook pertainsprimarily to the culture of channel catfish (lctaluruspunctatus). However, much of it can also be used in theproduction of other species of catfish.
