figures shaped in box hedges and yew trees to small, secretive private patches
behind well-groomed hedges and white-painted fences. Come and explore.

Sense the aroma of coffee and elder flower, pyramid cake and roses.
Especially in Billinge, where the Frick family have their bakery in an
absolutely delightful garden – wrapped in climbing roses and stylish
Empress trees. There are lots of secretive arbours there too.

The sun drenched white-plastered Bosjökloster (castle) lies in the

heart of Skåne, where the Söderåsen ridge winds its way down
towards Stockamöllan and the lake at Ringsjön. The petals from
the shimmering pink Alba roses vibrate in the lake’s breeze.
Delphiniums, monk’s-hoods and lavender lead you along mellow
lawns towards a beautiful park with a lovers’ path and a thousand
year old oak. Hire a rowing boat at the lake or let the children Bosjökloster (castle)
loose among the animal enclosures. There’s a restaurant, café and
a picnic spot. Or you can explore inside the castle vaults...

South of Hässleholm, close to the beaches of the Finjasjön lake

you’ll find Hovdala slott (castle) with its beautiful park and
delightful renaissance garden, filled with cultural plants from
times gone by. The castle dates back to the 16th century and is Hovdala slottsträdgård
a national cultural heritage centre. It has an orangery, built during Castle Garden
the 1790s, and in the large stable there is a pleasant shop, delightful
restaurant and café. Yum...

 Heavenly roses
and rhododendrons
It’s not just the aroma of roses that surrounds you in Skåne, you’ll smell cows
and horses. And the sea. Especially in the areas around Mölle and Kullaberg,
where the light scent of a freshly blossoming beech wood is especially alluring.
Not to mention all the wood anemones, yellow wood anemones and lungwort
that change the wild slopes into a veritable Garden of Eden each spring.

Take a trip to Kullaberg
The official residence of the Himmels-
torp forest rangers. During midsummer
the most lively roses dazzle you in all
shapes and colours. They grow in large
bushes, climbing up verandas and half-
timbered walls or winding themselves
around the old apple trees. And then you
see the sea. It is the distant blue cove
that appears behind verdant meadows
and paddocks. There’s a little shop here
and you can stay at the Bed & Breakfast
and wake up to a fresh, dewy morning in
the middle of the magnificent country-
side. But call before you go there.

  In this delightful countryside you
shouldn’t miss the superb Krapperups
slott (castle) and country park.
Krapperup is situated at Nyhamnsläge,
between Höganäs and Mölle. Make
sure you time your visit when the
rhododendrons are in bloom at the end of
May, beginning of June. You can ramble
among the huge rhododendron bushes
behind the red plastered renaissance
Norrvikens trädgårdar (garden)
castle and be amazed that the back of the
castle is decorated with enormous seven-
pointed chalk stripes in the reddish-
pink brickwork. The coat of arms of the
Gyllenstierna family. The park is home
to so many beautiful old trees and there
are many shaped figures parading around
the castle. There is even a rose garden
and perennial borders. The café offers the
most delicious pastries, cakes and biscuits
you could ever wish for. Look out for
Krapperup’s art exhibitions and concerts.
More gardens
The royal Sofiero slott (castle), with its
famous rhododendron park and delightful
garden is in Helsingborg. Take a trip too
to Fredriksdals museer och trädgårdar
(outdoor museum and gardens). You can
ramble around here for days. Fredriksdal
is Skåne in miniature. We recommend a
visit to Norrvikens trädgårdar (gardens),
a shaped master-work in a beech wood
above Båstad. Every year the great garden
circuit is held in north-west Skåne. The
gates open to lots of exciting private
gardens. Not to be missed!

Tempting Snapphane district
Pack a filling picnic basket and take the
whole family on a tour in northeast Skåne.
Wanås Slottspark (country park), with its
exciting sound displays and sculptures by
internationally famous artists nestling
among hundred year old beech trees, is
located in Knislinge in Östra Göinge. Check
out the infamous Snapphane oak where
many of the Danish Snapphane mercen-
aries are reputed to have ended their days
after being captured by the Swedes...
  If you didn’t manage to take food with
you, stop at Denningarums farm at
Östanå just outside Broby. There’s a farm
store with delicacies and food and drink
to order. You can pick your own bouquet
of flowers in the garden and buy freshly
picked vegetables. Children can say hello
to the farm animals and rent canoes.

 Drop in on the
secret gardens
It’s ”open garden” in Österlen on 1 July. That’s when the gates
open to many private, secret gardens. Behind high fences and
green flower beds you’ll hear happy cries and Latin plant
names flying like light butterflies over roses and perennials.

Advice and inspiration
It’s fun walking around “someone else’s”
garden. There are not just lots of lovely
flower beds and plants to look at. You get
to meet the owner of the garden who can
tell you more about his or her plants, and
get lots of valuable tips. Many private
gardens are accessible throughout the
summer. You can find the names and tele-
phone numbers in this brochure. Just call
and find out if the owner is at home.
  The most beautiful flower beds thrive
in Mandelmann’s garden in Rörum out-
side Kivik. They are full of angelica and
ball thistle, lamb’s-ears and lilac Allium
balls, hyssop, sapphire sage and the most
tender gypsophila. The greenest water-
cress, orchids and shiny blue Pontederia
grow there. Gardener Gustav Mandelmann
also gladdens his visitors with a cheerful
reel on the violin. Then he leads the great
adventure among the frogs, salamanders,
pigs and chickens for children of all ages
on Sundays throughout the summer.
  Ulriksdals trädgård (garden) is in Kivik
with its old, exotic garden and greenhouse
full of Christmas roses and Helleborus.

blooming in the boxwood parterres
of Haven in April and May.
There is also a shop with English garden
accessories, such as urns and footscrapers.
Simrishamn is a real gem. There is a tour-
ist office in the harbour with thousands
of tips for fun outings.
  At Storgatan you can slide into a secret
oasis – Apotekarns trädgård. (The pharm-
acist’s garden). Here you’ll find palms,
olive trees, rosemary and figs between the
half-timbered buildings. Apotekarns has a
plant shop and a café.
  Embedded among the softly rolling hills
of Mellby and Grevlunda above Kivik is
Jansro Gård & Ateljé (Farmhouse & Work-
shop). An authentic Skåne farm with beauti-
ful stone paving, a pretty water-lily pond
and a garden conservatory scented with
peach, lavender and honey rose. On the
farm there is also a shop and a small café
plus a dressmaker’s studio.
  The wonderful Rosarium is close to the
old Abbey at Ystad. The Rosarium is a fan-
tastic source of inspiration for anyone
wanting to see how old-style roses and
climbing roses appear in all their splend-
our. It is great for tips for your own garden.
Don’t miss Åbergs trädgård (garden) in
Mandelmanns Trädgård
(garden) in Rörum
Öja outside Ystad. There are at least 1,000
types of perennials and just as many other
types of plants. Plus a small, pretty show
garden and café. In Gärsnäs, west of Simris-
hamn, is a show garden inspired by both
classic idioms and gardening traditions
from Skåne. In Haven you can enjoy a stroll
along garden paths edged with pot grown
satinwood and boxwood parterres while
resting your eyes on almond blossoms,
camellias and the walled herbaceous garden.

 Fragrant herbs and
flourishing veg gardens
Don’t miss the delightful vegetable gardens in southwest Skåne. Tirups herb
garden is situated in a grove on the plain outside Staffanstorp and on the island of
Ven you will find Uraniborgs revived renaissance garden. In the heart of Malmö is the
old garden that still contains herbs from Henrik Smith’s medicinal writings in 1546.

Time for new discoveries
If you haven’t seen the vegetable garden
at Katrinetorp, you have missed some-
thing special. It’s a magnificent model
estate connected to a small red country
house on the fringe of Malmö. The Vege-
table garden is enormous and one of the
largest in Sweden. It is designed according
to a classic pattern with cross-aisles and
a centre point, filled with lush vegetables,
fragrant herbs, perennials and summer
flowers. At Katrinetorp there is also a
rose garden, a beautiful park with
delightful walking paths and best of all,
an excellent restaurant with the garden’s
own produce on the menu. Another
oasis, Slottsträdgården, is found in
Kungsparken, behind the old Malmöhus
fortress – with colourful perennial flower
gardens, spice and rose garden. It is an
open garden that sells fresh, ecologically
grown vegetables. Slottsträdgården also
has secret green rooms and a garden
where children can plant whatever they
like. The little café sells the town’s most
delicious carrot cake.

You find Tirups örtagård (herb garden)
in a grove on the plain outside Staffans-
torp between Malmö and Lund. Relax
with a cup of coffee under an apple tree
in the herb garden and study the flower
beds. It’s a place for rest and inspiration.
You find at least 30 types of thyme here.
Tirup also has a nursery and a shop with
a small library of gardening literature.

Skåne’s most beautiful

garden? The countryside.
A new park is taking shape at the foot of the Turning Torso skyscraper in Malmö.
It’s a succinct creation framed in bushes and trees, apostrophized with high
black bows and imaginative islands of flowering perennials and Japanese grass.
All created by landscape architect, Ulf Nordfjell.

Ulf Nordfjell’s creation is one of the international
gardening world’s foremost. In 2009, he won his
second gold medal and title for being ‘Best in
Show’ at the prestigious Chelsea Flower Show in
London. It was the first time that Sweden won
the award for two consecutive years. Behind the
commissioning of a new garden for Chelsea is the
prominent newspaper The Daily Telegraph. Having
seen Ulf Nordfjell’s gold medal garden ´A tribute
to Linnaeus´ the year before, the newspaper
wasted no time in commissioning him for this
year’s flower show. Naturally, Ulf Nordfjell is both
proud and happy. In his most recent show garden
at the Chelsea Flower Show, Ulf Nordfjell tried to
bring together Swedish modernism and traditional
English landscape gardening.
“The garden featured both Scandinavian and
English garden influences; strictly symmetric
and aromatic and resplendent with seductive
fragrances from culinary plants and Swedish
meadow flowers“, describes Ulf Nordfjell. His
latest assignments include among other things
the redesigning of Stadsparken (City Park) in
Lund in preparation for Lund’s Centennial Anni-
versary in 2011. Ulf Nordfjell has many years
experience in reconstructing and redesigning
parks and recreational areas throughout
Sweden such as Riddarparken and Berzelii Park
in Stockholm, Linköping Garden Society as well
as Gothenburg Garden Society and Botanical
Garden.

What will be special in
the Western Harbour?
“I’m creating a space which all visitors can
enjoy and that can also act as a welcoming
forerunner to Turning Torso. White and pink
cherries blossom among high branching
trees such as beech and ash. There are raised
“islands” with Japanese grass, flowerbeds
and round benches with water among the
hard surfaces. Here will grow perennials
like blue-flowering Lemon Catmint, slender
spars of Perovskian and pink Great Burnet.
Snowdrops and Crown Imperials bloom in
early spring, followed by dark blue Wind-
flowers, Star Hyacinths and Purple
Sensations.”
What role does a garden
play in today’s society?
“The garden is soon the only place where
people can develop. Now there is an in-
creasing interest in green public spaces.
Everyone wants to join in and enjoy it, but
few want to take care of maintenance. It’s
extremely important to set aside funds to
take care of our green capital.”
What’s your favourite garden?
“My own. Is it OK to say so? It’s in the
north-east county of Västerbotten, where
I have my roots. It’s a sparsely populated,
deserted landscape filled with scented
forests and flowering pastures. I have the
chance to create something that no-one
else can see. The forests around Tallheden
are the biotops I like most. But I love cont-
rasts and enjoy travelling to Italy and my

favourite – The Villa Gamberaias renais-
sance garden on the hills above Florence.
An intoxicating experience and a fairy tale
meeting between the disciplined garden
and the wild surrounding countryside. In
renaissance gardens, plants were cut and
shaped to raise the art of gardening to an
intellectual level and to free gardens from
nature’s chaos. Gamberaia has what you
miss in a garden; architecture, design and
the art of gardening that is unified by the
stylistic ideals of renaissance man.”
“Another of my favourite gardens is in the
USA. It’s the South Coast Plaza in south
California, a modern piazza of stone and
concrete right in the middle of the wild
prairie landscape, created by Isamu Nogucci,
sculptor and architect. It’s a hard landscape
with material from the city’s streets and
buildings that meets the prairie’s grassy
hills in a minimalistic elegance. The Piazza
is dissected by a sunken stream with strea-
ming water. The place is a great experience
of beauty, particularly at night when the
special lighting is a part of the formation.”
Do you have any
favourites in Skåne?
“It is impossible to pick a specific one.
The entire Skåne countryside is fantastic.
The Dalby Hage National Park is extremely
beautiful. And so is the South-Eastern part
of Skåne called Österlen.”
Which plants inspire you?
“I like to move between wild and cultivated.
At the Chelsea Flower Show I go for catsfoot,
bluebells, violets and grasses from the Swe-
dish Northland, while I use two metre high
foxtail lillies as the main attraction. I often
work with public space that requires plants
with a powerful expression. One of my latest
sources of inspiration is the film “Mama Mia!”
and the scene where Meryl Streep dances
around billowing clothes lines in Greece.
Do you know what was hanging there?
Cloth with the most fantastic floral patterns
by Josef Frank! No one can interpret the
Swedish summer like he does.” As a tribute
to the architect and designer Josef Frank,
Ulf Nordfjell has redesigned two of his flower-
beds for Millesgården’s Summer Exhibition
2010 (Stockholm).

Rosarium at the monastery, Ystad.
A delightful retreat in the heart of Ystad
next to Sweden’s second best preserved
mediaeval monastery. This rosarium has
around 90 roses, the majority old varie-
ties, the monastery well, herb garden and
cabbage patch all as they were in the
Middle Ages. Visitors are welcome all year
round, but of course the rosarium is at

Norrvikens trädgårdar, just west of
Båstad on the slopes of the Hallandsåsen
ridge with views over Laholmsbukten bay.
Voted the most beautiful park in Sweden
and the second most beautiful in Europe
2006. The garden was founded by garden
architect and fruit expert Rudolf Abelin
in 1906 and today is one of the most
valuable historical gardens in the Nordic
countries. In 2004-2007 Norrvikens
trädgårdar was run by world famous
Danish floral artist Tage Andersen,
bringing a new artistic dimension to the
gardens. Norrvikens trädgårdar has be-
come a horticulturally stunning backdrop
for theatre, exhibitions, concerts and
ballet performances. In the park there
is a children’s play area. Café, restaurant

Helsingborg
Fredriksdals Museer & Trädgårdar,
Helsingborg. Historical gardens and
parks, many of which are unique in
Sweden. Rose garden with over 450
varieties of old-fashioned roses and
kitchen garden with ancient varieties
of vegetables and fruit. Fredriksdal
botanical garden is the only garden
in the Nordic countries dedicated to a
single province, with 1,400 wild plants
from Skåne divided between around 30
different plant groups. We also have
a large collection of useful plants, a
genetic section and fields, meadows and
land typical of different parts of Skåne.
The manor house is surrounded by the
French park laid out in the 18th century,
the English park and a French-style herb
garden. Exhibitions and activities are

Lomma
Alnarpsparken. Alnarp is located in the
heart of the open agricultural landscape
between Malmö and Lund. This famous
park contains Sweden’s second largest
collection of species and varieties of trees
and shrubs and is open all year round.
The range of annuals, perennials, herbs,
ornamental trees and shrubs can be
admired throughout the growing season.
Each year in May the Swedish University
of Agricultural Sciences in Alnarp holds
an open day where researchers, lecturers,
staff and students show what they do to
the public. The programme includes
guided tours of the park, a plant doctor
service, plant sales, tree advice, tours of
the library, the agriculture museum and

Captain Albert Wallis started an arbo-
retum, primarily of conifers. By 1924 he

the Radisely Pavilion built in 1915. The

were probably growing here when the
allotments were new. The interior of the
pavilion is authentic early 18th century.

Landskrona
Uraniborg’s Renaissance garden, Tycho
Braheminnena, Landsv., Ven. Between
1576 and 1579 nobleman Tycho Brahe
created one of the first research institu-
tions in scientific history on the island of
Ven in Öresund. The castle of Uraniborg
was one of the most famous buildings of
the time. Around the castle Tycho Brahe
created a magnificent Renaissance
garden. Parts of this garden have
gradually been reconstructed as part
of a research project at the Swedish
University of Agricultural Sciences in
Alnarp. The garden is said to be the
foremost example of a Renaissance
garden in Sweden. The aim is for it to

Lomma
Alnarpsparken, Alnarp is located in the
heart of the open agricultural landscape
between Malmö and Lund. This famous
park contains Sweden’s second largest
collection of species and varieties of
trees and shrubs and is open all year
round. The range of annuals, perennials,
herbs, ornamental trees and shrubs can
be admired throughout the growing sea-
son. Each year in May the Swedish Uni-
versity of Agricultural Sciences in Alnarp
holds an open day where researchers,
lecturers, staff and students show what
they do to the public. The programme
includes guided tours of the park, a plant
doctor service, plant sales, tree advice,
tours of the library, the agriculture

Kopparhatten, it’s a 100 m drop to the
valley below. The visitor centre provides

is also the starting point for guided walks
on various themes in spring, summer and

Kristianstad
Tivoliparken, V. Boulevarden, Kristian-
stad. The park was created in the early
19th century and contains about 70
different kinds of tree, including many
rare and old trees. The oldest is probably
an oak tree 27 m tall, planted in about
1790. Trees include ginkgo biloba, mul-
berry, Sophora japonica, four kinds of wal-
nut tree, silver pear, etc. In the northwest
part of the park there is a rose garden
containing about 120 varieties. The herb
garden contains about 70 different herbs.

Landskrona
Citadellets koloniområde, Landskrona.
One of Sweden’s oldest allotment areas
on the ramparts of the Citadel. The first
allotments were created here in the

Floral roundabouts, Landskrona. Every
year thousands of spring and summer
flowers are planted in Landskrona’s
roundabouts. This welcoming gesture to
road users is much appreciated and has
become something of a signature for the

Hilleshögs dalar, Glumslöv, Landskrona.
This nature reserve stretches from the
coast of Öresund almost 2 km inland.
A hilly area with remains from different
eras. The pillbox from the time of Karl
XII is now covered in cowslips and where
clay was once dug for bricks, orchids now
grow. The mouth of the valley, on the
slope south of Rustningshamn is one of
the most species-rich areas in western
Skåne. A beautiful landscape whatever

Karlslund, Karlslundsv., Landskrona. The
park was planted in the early 19th century
to give local people “necessary fuel and
timber for tools and to constitute a
decorative element in this barren area,
to the encouragement and delight of the
townspeople and to delight the eye of

Slottsparken, by the Citadel, Landskrona.
An untouched 19th-century park, many
of whose trees were a gift from Copen-
hagen. Some of the park’s 120 year-old
elms have been turned into impressive
sculptures by tree sculptor Daniel
Andersson. The northern part of the park
is full of flowers during the summer, while
in the south the art gallery Konsthallen
is surrounded by a sculpture park. 20
sculptures by some of the best sculptors

Stadsparken – tree sculptures, Lands-
krona. Landskrona suffered terribly from
Dutch elm disease in 2003 and many
trees had to be cut down. But to get
something positive out of the experience,
some of the biggest tree stumps of the
120 year-old elms were transformed
into rooted sculptures. Most are in the

Lund
Kulturen’s park, Tégnerplatsen in Lund.
Wandering through Kulturen Open Air
Museum is like taking a walk through
history. The scents of the medieval herb
garden combine with the light aroma
of tar from the 17th century church. The
manor house stands beneath a spreading
chestnut tree with the garden café adding
to the lovely surroundings in summer.
Every building tells a story from the past.
Nobleman, priests, townsfolk and
peasants, professors and poor crofters,
all their houses are preserved at Kulturen.

Stadsparken in Lund, a delightful spot in
the centre of Lund with café/restaurant,
boules and a large play area. The park
was created in 1907 for a major exhibi-
tion by architect Theodor Wåhlin. A few
years later a pond was added, which now
attracts many species of birds. In the
1990s a hornbeam maze designed by
Oscar Reutersvärd and aviaries designed

Ankarparken, V. Hamnen, Malmö. An
ecology park designed by landscape
architect Stig L Andersson and built in
2001. The park is made up of different
biotopes: an alder marsh, an oak grove
and a beech grove, in the form of islands
in a slightly sunken lawn. Ankarparken
adjoins a wide canal edged with curving

Beijerspark, Malmö. Park in the style of

Bulltoftaparken / Toftanäs wetland
park, Malmö. Bulltoftaparken covers
75 ha of a former airfield, and is home
to a wide variety of plants and wildlife.
The park is divided into three zones:
nature zone with deciduous woodland
and different meadow biotypes, a more
traditional park zone with an arboretum
and allotments, and a sports zone with
grassed sports pitches and exercise areas.
Toftanäs wetland park is just E of Bull-
tofta parken and was created in 1989.
Here a wetland has been created based
on an open stormwater system leading
to a pond. The wetlands offer excellent
meadow flora and are mown each sum-

parken was created in 2001 and is one of

bulbs have been planted in recent years.
Hammars park was created in the late
19th century on the initiative of local

Husie mosse, Malmö. The wetlands of
Husie mosse by Husie church were opened
on 9 September 1997 and consist of a
clear stretch of water 600x100 m with
some islands, surrounded by the typical
landscape of Malmö. The lake attracts

Klagshamn, Malmö. This area is one of
the most valuable natural areas in Malmö
today. Two former lime quarries in E part
now filled with water. Rich flora and
several biotopes. Next to the lime quar-
ries are large woodland areas with elm,

rowan, Swedish whitebeam, maple and
willow. Clay pit lake in SW. The N side
of the promontory is dominated by dry
meadow vegetation, while the S side
has vegetation typical of a limestone
plain, with coastal meadows to north

Kungsparken, Malmö. Popular area in
central Malmö. The town’s first park,
opened in 1872. Unusual exotic trees such
as tulip tree, Indian bean tree and swamp
cypress. A number of initiatives have been
carried out recently to preserve Kungs-
parken as a small botanical garden, in-
cluding an extensive tree replanting
programme. The western partof the
park is full of azaleas and rhododendrons.

Käglinge recreation area, Malmö. The
sandy hills, formerly a gravel pit, have
now been transformed into a recreation
area with wooded groves and dry mead-
ows grazed by sheep. Frogs flourish in

Lernacken/Sibbarp, Malmö. The coastal
meadow between the harbour in Lim-
hamn and Sibbarp is the only original
part of the coast still remaining in this
built-up area. The strip is 400 m long and
50 m wide. Sibbarp has large green areas
and several places for swimming. Barn-
viken is a shallow swimming bay. To the
north of Barnviken lie the remains of an
old harbour first recorded in 1491. Ler-
nacken largely consists of sludge from
the cement industry in Limhamn and is
partly covered in vegetation. Lernacken
offers views of the Öresund Bridge and
cycle paths to the coastal meadows of

Pildammsparken, Malmö. The oldest
part, created by architect Ferdinand
Boberg and Crown Princess Margareta,
dates from the 1914 Baltic Exhibition.
The flower avenue in the English style,
and the Margareta Pavilion still remain.
After the exhibition Danish landscape
architect Erik Erstad-Jørgensen drew
up a plan to complete the park in the
English romantic style, which was partly
completed. In 1926 city engineer Erik
Bülow-Hübe revised the plan, giving the
remainder of the park a classic form, in
monumental style. The park is magnifi-
cent in its design, with large areas of
water, open lawns and enclosed wooded
areas. Some of the latest additions in-
clude a sensory garden and Queen
Silvia’s rose garden. Amphitheatre with
open-air theatre performances and music

sound shows in the lake from 1 May to

Rönneholmsparken, Malmö. Rönne-
holmsparken is probably one of the few
places in Malmö to have had trees
continuously since the 18th century. The
park and the house, Rönneholmsgård, in
its centre, were originally built at the end
of the 18th century by C.M. Nordlindh.
The park covers just over 5 ha. and is divi-
ded into a landscaped park south of the
house with exotic trees such as Cauca-
sian wingnut, and a wooded area north
of the house, predominantly of beech.

ening organisation Planteringsvännerna
planted an avenue of Italian alder here in
1990. Fritidsparken is a geometrical fun-
