Get the Most Out of Parent-Teacher


Conferences
ƒ Be prepared to listen as well as talk. It helps to write out questions before you leave
home. Be prepared to take notes during the conference and ask for an explanation if
you don't understand.

ƒ Ask the teacher for specific details about your child's work and progress.

ƒ Ask questions like, “How is my child doing in class?” “What is your homework
policy?” “How much time should be spent on homework?”

ƒ This may also be an appropriate time to ask how your child is evaluated.

ƒ Talk with the teacher about your child's strengths, study habits, special interest,
medical problems that can affect learning and any other recent experiences that may
affect behavior at school. This will help the teacher understand your child better.

ƒ Ask the teacher for specific ways to help your child at home.

ƒ After a few weeks, follow up with the teacher to see how things are going with your
child.

Additional questions for parents of junior high and high school students:

ƒ Does the teacher recommend specific high school programs for your child?

ƒ Does the school have career awareness classes and programs?

ƒ Is your child exposed to different types of Post Secondary Preparation Opportunities


in school?
