URGENT TURKEY CALL – AT LEAST 6,000 NEEDED
1,470 Turkeys Have Been Donated Today – More Turkeys Are Needed
Thursday, November 11, 2010 (DENVER) – The Denver Rescue Mission (DRM) urgently requests donationsof at least 6,000 frozen turkeys, weighing 12 pounds or more, to feed the homeless and poor during the holidayseason. The drive began on November 1
st
and by 12:00 p.m. Friday, November 12th, 1,470 turkeys have beendonated. Turkeys can be dropped off at the Mission’s Lawrence Street Shelter, 1130 Park Avenue West inDenver (corner of Park Avenue and Lawrence Street). At this time last year, over 4,000 turkeys had beendonated.Individuals, families, schools, corporations and churches have been calling to say they will answer our need. Help is needed right now for DRM to make the goal by November 23

. We are not counting turkeys thathave been promised, only turkeys in the freezer.Each year, DRM requests 6,000 turkeys from individuals and organizations. On average, approximately10,000 turkeys are donated which allows DRM to distribute thousands of birds to local churches and non-profitswho are also providing holiday food boxes to homeless and low-income men, women and families. The earlier turkey donations come in, the more turkeys can be distributed to outside organizations.This year, DRM has received requests for nearly 5,000 turkeys for holiday food boxes fromorganizations and churches such as Agape Church, Ambassador’s for Christ, Mean Street Ministries, JewishFamily Services, Redistribution Center, Frierson International, and Aurora Public Schools. DRM will also bedistributing 1,000 turkeys to Volunteers of America for their Thanksgiving and Christmas food box programs.On Wednesday, November 24

, approximately 250 turkeys will be used at the Denver Rescue Mission’sGreat Thanksgiving Banquet hosted by Governor Bill Ritter. Approximately 1,250 turkeys will be used in food boxes at the Thanksgiving Banquet-in-a-Box food box distribution on Tuesday, November 23

at The Crossing,DRM’s transitional living facility. Additional turkeys will be used at DRM’s five facilities in Metro-Denver and Northern Colorado where 660,000 meals are served annually to hungry men, women and children.The community has always stepped up when DRM has an urgent request.
