“The Spirit led the first Christians to do unexplainable things, to live lives that didn’t make sense
to the culture around them, and ultimately to spread the story of God’s grace around the world” -
Francis Chan
Ephesians 1:7-14
7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to
the riches of his grace, 8which he lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight 9 making known
to us the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ 10 as a plan
for the fullness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth.
11In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose
of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will, 12so that we who were the
first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of his glory. 13In him you also, when you heard
the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with
the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire
possession of it, to the praise of his glory.
The spirit is our guarantor/ co-signer of the promises that God has for our lives
It is possible to be saved and still be void of an “active” connection with the Spirit
Acts 19:1-6
1And it happened that while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul passed through the inland country and
came to Ephesus. There he found some disciples. 2And he said to them, "Did you receive the
Holy Spirit when you believed?" And they said, "No,we have not even heard that there is a Holy
Spirit." 3And he said, "Into what then were you baptized?" They said, "Into John’s baptism."
4And Paul said, "John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in
the one who was to come after him, that is, Jesus." 5On hearing this, they were baptized in the
name of the Lord Jesus. 6And when Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on
them, and they began speaking in tongues and prophesying.
The spirit has at its principle point love. You can’t operate in love and
condemnation at the same time.
Genesis 1:1-2
1 In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. 2The earth was without form and
void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the
face of the waters.
Genesis 2:7
7 then the LORD God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the
breath of life, and the man became a living creature.
3More than that, we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, 4and
endurance produces character, and character produces hope, 5and hope does not put us to
shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has
been given to us.
26Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we
ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. 27And he who
searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints
according to the will of God.
