The Summer Season Approaches!
Centre Update
Warm pre-Summer Greetings! It has been a trying couple ofmonths in Canterbury, but EATHeadquarters and EAT personnelhave all been lucky to weather thestorm relatively unscathed. We areaware that many others in the EATcommunity have suffered worsedamage and we are thinking of you.On a more positive note, in thesecond half of this year, EAT tookpart in the College of Arts’ intern-ship programme at the University ofCanterbury. Our intern, DominiqueJoslen, conducted research intofeedback from professionals aboutEAT’s services. She presented thisresearch to EAT staff last month andreported that she had received over-whelmingly positive feedback aboutEAT. The report is a fantastic pieceof research and a great way for EATto showcase itself to funders and thecommunity. In other collaborative news, TheresaPeters, from EDEN, will be coming toChristchurch in December to meetwith EAT and governance and to dis-cuss further collaborations betweenthe two organisations in the areas ofpublic awareness and workforce de-velopment.We wish you all the best for a restfuland fruitful Summer!Meri Kirihimete me ng

Merry Christmas!
These words, Merry Christmas, mean a lot of different things todifferent people.
sue of ‘The looking Glass’, the news-letter for the Queensland Eating Dis-order Association, that you can nd inour library in the waiting room.• Give yourself permission to say Noto invitations if you feel overwhelmed.• Think of responses you may givewhen meeting family members orfriends you haven’t seen for a while.Practice them.• Talk to your family, partner or sup-port person about your fears andconcerns and how you can managethem together.• If you don’t know what food willbe served, ask the person who is or-ganising the meal, or let your supportperson do this.• Offer to take food to share, andtake ‘safe’ food for yourself to eat.• Remember, all eyes will not bewatching how much or little you eat;usually people are too busy with theirown meal and chatting away.• Most people overeat at Christmasand often comment on the quantitythey have eaten. Remember that theircomments are not aimed at you.• Take time out to relax: listen toyour favourite music, talk to a trustedperson, go for a walk with someoneyou like, or sit in the garden soakingup the atmosphere.• Give yourself permission to enjoythe festivities. You do not have to behappy and smile all the time, no oneexpects that.• Tensions often increase aroundChristmas time as stress reducespeople’s abilities to communicateand listen effectively. You are not re-sponsible for this.• Take a break from self-criticismand comparing yourself to others.Relax and enjoy the moment.Being prepared for Christmas stressand having your strategies in placewill help you to enjoy the Christmasperiod more. Remember that the joyof Christmas lies in celebrating goodtimes in good company, it is neverabout the food.Wishing you all a Prepared and Mer-ry Christmas,

Some people will be elated as theylook forward to having time off workand spending time with the peoplethey love. Some look forward to par-tying or lots of presents. Others willstress out with all the preparations orwill dread the hype that seems to gowith Christmas.Where are you on this continuum? It would not be unusual for peoplewith eating difculties to feel a mixof pleasure and dread. Yes, it is niceto have time off work or study and tosee friends and relatives, but the em-phasis on food around Christmas canbe a big stressor.Maybe you have already developedstrategies to cope with the high pres-sure around Christmas. This is thetime to remember them. Which onesworked for you and which ones needto be modied? Have you learnednew ways of coping in the mean time? You might want to practice thesewith your counsellor or support per-son. Or you could write them downon cards, so you can grab them whenyou actually need it.Here is a list of some practical tipsthat I found in the December 2009 is-
