A Cat or a Dog?
Marg.
-
Tom, dear! When we are married, I would like to keepsome nice pet animals … a dear little dog … and a Persiancat.
Tom
-
No, my dear.
Marg.
-
Well, perhaps not a dog and a cat. They would fight - andboth would be unhappy. So, either a dog or a cat. We mustdecide.
Tom
-
I have already decided. I can assure you that there will beneither a dog nor a cat in my house.
Marg.
-
But it will be my house too! Oh!…why must you alwaysdisagree with me? You know how much I love animals!
Tom
-
Yes, I know, dear. And if I were a millionaire I would buyyou a whole Zoo - just for you! a lion, a tiger, anelephant, some monkeys -
Marg.
-
Don’t talk nonsense! Tell me rather, why you dislike catsand dogs!
Tom
-
Now you are talking nonsense! I am very fond of animals, too. I like both cats and dogs. But I don’t like to have themin the house, barking and miaowing. I like peace and quiet.
Marg.
-
Yes, of course! That’s why you are so fond of juke boxes, Isuppose. Oh, why must you always quarrel?
Tom
-
I always quarrel? Well, that is really the limit!
Marg.
-
Yes, you quarrel about everything! You quarrel nearlyevery day! And each time you promise that you will neverquarrel again.
Tom
-
Margaret! Please don’t be silly! You are behaving like achild!
Marg.
-
Just because I want my rights?

2
(continuation)
A Cat or a Dog?
Tom
-
What rights? The right to keep a barking dog?
Marg.
-
Mr Hudson! That is enough! If I were a man, you would notdare to speak to me like that!
Tom
-
If you were a man you wouldn’t be so silly.
Marg.
-
Boo hoo hoo hoo hoo
Tom
-
Oh, my poor, foolish little Margaret! There! There, there, dear! Don’t cry. Come on. Dry your tears. There, there …the poor little girl wanted to keep a nasty, little barkingdog …
Marg.
-
May I keep a parrot, then?
