Operating System Functions
At the simplest level, an operating systemdoes two things:
1.
It manages the hardware andsoftware resources of the system. Ina desktop computer , these resources include such things as the processor ,  memory, disk space and more (On acell phone, they include the keypad, the screen, the address book, the phone dialer, the battery and thenetwork connection).2.It provides a stable, consistent wayfor applications to deal with thehardware without having to know allthe details of the hardware. The first task, managing the hardware andsoftware resources, is very important, asvarious programs and input methodscompete for the attention of the central processing unit (CPU) and demand memory, storage and input/output (I/O) bandwidth for their own purposes. The second task, providing a consistentapplication interface, is especially importantif there is to be more than one of a particular type of computer using the operatingsystem, or if the hardware making up thecomputer is ever open to changeDisk storage is only one of the memorytypes that must be managed by the operatingsystem, and it's also the slowest. Ranked inorder of speed, the types of memory in acomputer system are:
High-speed cache -- This is fast, relatively small amounts of memorythat are available to the CPU throughthe fastest connections. Cachecontrollers predict which pieces of data the CPU will need next and pullit from main memory into high-speed cache to speed up system performance.
Main memory -- This is the RAMthat you see measured in megabyteswhen you buy a computer.
Secondary memory -- This is mostoften some sort of rotating magneticstorage that keeps applications anddata available to be used, and servesasvirtual RAMunder the control of the operating system.
