Photoshop Tutorial
Glassy Sphere
Skill level: IntermediateDuration: 10 minutesRequirements: Photoshop version 5 or higherGoal: To create a glassy sphere with shadow
Stage 01.
Let’s begin by making a new document 500 x 500 pixels at 72dpi. Makesure you have your
rulers
turned on (Press
Ctrl & R
). Right click on thetop ruler and select
Pixels
.Drag a new guide from the left handruler towards the centre of the canvasuntil you feel it lock in the middle. To dothis, simply left click and hold yourmouse button inside the ruler, and thendrag towards the centre of the canvas.Do the same with the top ruler. Youshould end up with 2 guides intersectingthe middle of the canvas
Stage 02.
Create a new layer and name it ‘
Sphere
’.Select the
Circular Marquee Tool
anddraw a circle big enough to fill about 50%of the canvas. Make sure you hold downthe
Shift
key while drawing the circle. Thiswill constrain it to be the same hight andwidth.Now drag the circle towards the centre othe canvas until it locks into the centre.
 
 
 
Stage 03.
Decide on a colour you want your sphere to be, and changeyour for ground and background colours to suit. I choosegreen for this tutorial; therefore I will have to choose a lightgreen foreground colour and a very dark green for thebackground colour.
 Select the
Gradient
tool and chooseits
Radial Gradient
option. Nowdrag a radial gradient starting nearthe bottom of the circle towards thetop. You will end up with a filledcircle like thisClick on the
Background
layer andthen create a
New Layer
.Name this layer ‘
Shadow
’. Hide thelayer named ‘
Sphere
’ by clicking thesmall eye icon next to it in the layerspalette
 
Stage 04.
Change the foreground colour to
Black
and choose the
PaintBucket
tool, then fill the circle.Now press
Ctrl & D
to deselect.Go to the Layer menu and select
Add Layer Mask
, and then
Reveal All
.
 
Now grab the
Radial Gradient
tool again drag from the exactcentre of the black circle towards the outer circle, and let go of the mouse button about 2 or 3 pixels from the edge
 
Stage 05.
Press
Ctrl & T
and you will be in
Transform
mode. Using the
Move
 tool, squash the circle downwardsmy dragging the top resize handledownwards.Press
Enter
when you are happywith the height
Stage 06.
Enable the layer called ‘
Sphere
’ byclicking the eye icon next to it inthe layers palette. Select the
Move
 tool, and then use the
Down Arrow
 key on your keyboard to nudge theshadow downwards
Stage 07.
Make a new layer above the
Sphere
’ layer and name it ‘
Glare
’.Using the circular
EllipticalMarquee
tool, draw a circle a fewpixels inside the sphere. Hold
shift
 to constrain the circle.

Photohshop Elements does not have the Add Layer Mask. What could I use in Photoshop Elements to create this same effect.

Uploaded a sphere with the plastic wrap filter in my profile if any one wants to see it.

After you do what Michael say if you add a plastic wrap filter to sphere you can also get a pretty cool effect it makes it look a bit more 3d (when I do it, I put the highlight strengh at 10-20 and for the detail and the smoothness you put them at max). In my photoshop (cs) you have to merge the all layers and make it a jpeg befor you actually can get the filter to work. If anyone knows how to apply the filter while keeping it a PSD file I would like to know.
