THE USEFULNESS OF COMPUTERS

It cannot be denied that computers have changed the world in a few years. These
changes have been very quick and deep and have affected the way we live.
From an educational standpoint, many educators think that the use of computers
at schools is absolutely necessary, because it gives both teachers and students the
opportunity to gain access to a wealth of useful information that is on the Internet.
Furthermore, you have to keep in mind the fact that students are already used to using
them at home. However, opponents of this view say that the information which students
can find on the Internet is often harmful. It is also argued that computers keep young
people from reading or studying.
From a social point of view, e-mail and the Internet allow people who live far
from each other to keep in touch. Also, the social nets, such as Tuenti or Meetic, are
being used more and more by many single people to make new acquaintances or look
for a romance. Opponents argue that this kind of contact is very impersonal and even
dangerous.
As I see it, computers and the Internet are very useful learning tools. That is why
we teachers should teach the students how to use these unbelievable tools in order to
avoid the negative consequences that a wrong use of them could produce. Furthermore,
e-mail, Messenger and other computer programs are the cheapest and fastest ways to
communicate with people you already know. If you are also interested in getting in
touch with other people, there are many social nets at your disposal, as I said before.
But, you should be careful and not write very personal information on your computer
screen to be shared with anybody.
