-(Ammoland.com)-Japaneseriflesoftengetabadrap,at  leastwhencomparedtotheriflesoftheothermajorcombatantpowers   ofWorldWarII.  EvencollectorsofmilitariaviewtheJapaneseriflesasbeingofalower   quality,bu   tthisisntquitetrue.  Onereasonforthismisconceptionisthatmuchofwhatsurvived,andis   nowincollectionsisactuallyfromthelaterwaryears,thusnotuptothe   highestquality.  “Thefit,finish&overallqualityofmanufactureonearly   Japaneseweaponsequalsifnotsurpassesweaponsmadeby   otherparticipantsofWorldWarII,”explainsadvanced   JapanesemilitariacollectorJarethHolub.“Itwasntuntilthe    verylasttwoyears,duetoU.S.airstrikes,thatfactories   startedproducingsubparproducts.”  Theresultisthatmanyofthesmallarmsencountered
-notablythe    famousrifles-  
areactuallylatewaritems.Thishasresultedinthe   misconceptionthatJapanesesmallarmswerealwayssomewhatinferior.  Itistruehoweverthatthetwomaincombatrifles,theArisakaType38   andtheType99rifleswereessentiallybasedontechnologyuseda   generationearlierbutitshouldberememberedthatthesameheldtrue   formostoftheotherpowersatthestartofWorldWarIIaswell.Even   theUnitedStateswasstillintheprocessofrearmingwiththeM1rifle,  andthuslargenumbersof1903Springfieldrifleswereusedintheearly   stagesofthewar.  Likewise,GermanyandRussianwereusingtheirrespectiveboltaction   riflesatwar’send,asweretheBritish.TheJapaneseactuallyfaced   greaterresourceproblemsthantheotherpowers,buttheyalsohad   culturalissuesessentiallya   
“wantnot,neednot”
mentality.   Additionally,anotherissuecomplicatedmattersfortheJapanese   military,namelytheacknowledgedrivalryandsimmeringhatred    betweentheJapanesearmyandnavy.  “Thisledtothenavyhavingtostruggletoprocurearmsand   equipmentfromthegovernment&eventuallyleduptothe   navyestablishingitsownarsenalsystems,”emphasizes   Holub.“Thisbackbitingandinfightinghinderedthe   cooperationbetweenthebranchesofserviceandgreatly   affectedtheoutcomeofthewar.TheJapanesewereavery   frugalpeoplewhodidntbelieveinwastinganything   includingbullets.Thiswasoneofthereasonswhytheir   submachinegunproductionwaslimited.Hadtheyincreased   productionanddistributionitmighthavechangedtheir   combattactics.”  ThetwomainriflesusedbytheJapaneseinWorldWarIIarebothoften   calledthe
“Arisaka.”   
ThesewerenamedafterColonelNariakeAriska,   whowasresponsibleforcreatingthecommissiontofindanewrifle.The   firstpatternwasknownastheType30rifle
(the30comesfromthe1897    A.   D.,whichwasthe30thyearoftheEmperorMeiji)  
,andthiswas   up   datedfollowingtheRusso-JapaneseWarin1905.Thenewmodelthus    becametheType38,anditsawserviceduringtheFirstWorldWarand    wouldremaininservicewellintoWorldWarIIandbeyond.Itwas   chamberedinthe6.5x50SRandmorethanthreemillionofthesewere   made.ThegunclearlywasinfluencedbytheGermanK98andother   Mauserdesigns.Anumberofvariantsexisted,includingaType44   CavalryRifleandaType97SniperRifle.

DuringtheSecondSino-JapaneseWar,whichbeganin1931,itwas   apparentthatalargercartridgewasneededandtheJapaneseadopted   the7.7x58mmround,basedontheBritish.303(7.7x57R).Toconfuse   collectorsandmilitaryhistoriansfordecades,thisriflewasdesignated   theType99whichinthiscasereferstotheJapaneseyear2099,which    wasbelievedtobethedateofthecreationoftheworld.  ItwasoriginallytheintentionoftheImperialJapaneseArmytoreplace   theagingType38withtheType99,butthiswasnotpossible,andwith   limitedresourcesthetwofirearmswereusedside-by-side.Thusthe   monikerof
“Arisaka”   
isusedforbothrifles.Becausemanyofthelater    warrifleswereoflowerquality,andoftencalled
“lastditch”   
thereisa   commonmisconceptionthatallType99swerelastditch,butthisisfar   fromthecase.  Somethre   eandahalfmillionoftheType9   9riflesweremade,not  countingvariations,includingtheregularshortrifleaswellasType99   LongRifle,andtheSniperRifleType99.Anotherversionoftherifle,the   Type44Carbine   ,wasdesignedpr   imarilyforuseasacavalryrifle–    althoughthisshouldntbeconfusedwiththeType38Cavalryrifle,a   slightlyshorterversionoftheType38.Themostinterestingversionisby   fartheType2ParatroopRifle,whichcouldbrokendownintotwoparts.   AfinalvariationarethoseType99ShortRifles
(some133,000)  
thatwere   rechamberedbytheRepublicofKoreaArmytofiretheAmerican.03-06   Springfieldcartridge.  Today,themorevaluableType99sarethosewiththeimperial  chrysanthemumintact.Oftentheseweredefaced,reportedlyby   surrenderingJapanesesoldiersto
