Dear Resident,
The Coalition Government has been in office for just over 6 months and now has a
much clearer view of the state of the country’s finances.
Last year, the previous Government borrowed £157 billion to balance the books - that’s
one pound in every four spent by ministers. The taxpayer now has to pick up a bill of
£120 million every single day just on interest on the National Debt. Everyone knows
that action is needed to clear up the mess.
There is no hiding the fact that difficult decisions are needed. Councils will have to
take their share of cuts so that the massive level of borrowing can be brought under
control. Next year, Gateshead expects to have £25 million less to spend.
Although you wouldn’t think it when you hear the Labour Party speaking, they too
accept that cuts are needed (though they refuse to tell anyone where they should be
made.)
But we want to hear from you about which services provided by Gateshead Council
you think should be protected from cuts, areas where you think savings can be made
and any examples of waste you want to see ended.
Please fill in this survey form and return to Budget Survey, Liberal Democrats, 97
Front Street, Whickham, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE16 4JL.
Many thanks,
Sonya Hawkins

What do you think should be protected from cuts?
Please use the space below to tell us about those services which you feel should be a priority and
Gateshead Council should avoid cutting.
Please note that the Coalition has protected spending on schools from cuts. Please use this space
to tell us whether or not you think that was the right decision.
