The Coalition Government has been in office for just over 6 months and now has a
much clearer view of the state of the country’s finances.
Last year, the previous Government borrowed £157 billion to balance the books - that’s
one pound in every four spent by ministers. The taxpayer now has to pick up a bill of
£120 million every single day just on interest on the National Debt. Everyone knows
that action is needed to clear up the mess.
There is no hiding the fact that difficult decisions are needed. Councils will have to
take their share of cuts so that the massive level of borrowing can be brought under
control. Next year, Gateshead expects to have £25 million less to spend.
Although you wouldn’t think it when you hear the Labour Party speaking, they too
accept that cuts are needed (though they refuse to tell anyone where they should be
