We asked:
What does your library mean to you?
Medical libraries around the country celebrated October as National
Medical Librarians Month. On October 28, UT Health Science Center
librarians and library staff hosted a breakfast to celebrate this special
month and to participate in Texas Library Snapshot Day, an initiative
of the Texas Library Association to highlight the importance of Texas
libraries. Persons entering the library were asked to take a snapshot
and write some comments about ―what your librarians and library
mean to you.‖
Here are some of the comments we received:

A place to study late nights!

The librarians here have been so incredibly helpful and
friendly – they make my life (and research) less painful.
Graphic courtesy of the Medical Library Association.
I’ve used the library study rooms often and it’s great. I’ve also
asked the librarians for assistance when searching for articles on databases. They’ve always been a
great help.
They are great resource guiders. The library has helped me throughout the past two semesters.
In my current job, I could not accomplish what I have to do without the library and the medical
librarians. The librarians are friendly, know how to help bewildered users, and are able to provide
solutions to a variety of questions. Librarians are good people!
Access to professional literature to stay abreast of work in my discipline.
They mean a lot. They tell us how to get stuff around the library and they are nice about it!
I think everyone is very helpful and the library hours work well with my school hours for study time.
The library has opened a whole new world for me relative to all the different aspects of the services
they provide. No longer do I believe that libraries are just for accessing books and journals. The
expertise available in our library and the personnel regarding databases, searches and events is
outstanding. I have enjoyed their efforts to bring the campus together in their special events. A
wonderful resource!
Bondage. Study time. Always helpful.
Thank you to everyone who stopped to share a cup of coffee and have their photo taken. Thank you for taking
time to let us know what the library means to you.

The 4th Binational Conference for Promotores de Salud draws

recognition from the National Library of Medicine
Healthy Minds, Healthy Bodies was the
theme of the 4th Binational Conference
for Promotores de Salud, held on South
Padre Island in October 2009. The
project was recently selected as a
featured project of 2010 by the South
Central Region of the National Library of

More than 175 promotores, or
community health workers, from around
South Texas attended the conference,
which was planned by Greysi Reyna and
Kathy Carter of the UT Health Science
Center Ramirez Library, in partnership
with local community health agencies.

Other projects selected for special recognition include Communication and Education: Equipping the
Community to Fight CA-MRSA, a project of the St. Edward Mercy Medical Library in Forth Smith Arkansas;
Building Dynamic Partnerships in Public Health, a project of Tulsa Schusterman Center Library, University
of Oklahoma—Tulsa; From Band Aids to Twisters: Enhancing Community and Personal Preparedness, a
project of the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center; and A World of Medical Information Access

Gifts for Children: The Briscoe Library will

receive toy donations beginning in mid-November
For more than 25 years, Gifts for Children has been helping to brighten the
holidays for children in hospitals and clinics across San Antonio. Last year, more
than 4200 items were collected.
This year, the Briscoe Library will once again be a collection point for toy donations. Look for
our decked-out holiday book cart donation station, coming soon to the third floor of the Briscoe Library, near
the Administration Offices. Donations will be received until December 8. A list of recommended toys can be
found at http://library.uthscsa.edu/events/gfclist.pdf.

NIH introduces a database of images from biomedical literature

More than 2.5 million images
and figures from medical and
life sciences journals are now
available through Images, a
new resource for finding
images in biomedical
literature. The database was
developed and will be
maintained by the National
Center for Biotechnology
Information (NCBI), a
division of the National
Library of Medicine (NLM) at
the National Institutes of
Health (NIH).
Images is available at http://
www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/
images.
The database is expected to
have a wide range of uses for a
variety of user groups
including clinicians,
researchers, students and
educators.
Abstracts of articles in PubMed Central now include a strip at the bottom
NIH News containing thumbnails of the first few images in the article. The strip allows
October 28, 2010 readers to scroll through a complete set of images, to enlarge individual images,
and to link to a separate page containing the images and their accompanying
captions.

Updated content: Herbs and Supplements in MedlinePlus

In October, MedlinePlus released 100 new English and Spanish monographs on a broad range of dietary
supplements and herbal remedies. The new content is provided by Natural Medicines Comprehensive
Database Consumer Version (NMCD). Some of the highlights of the new monographs include:

Descriptions of herbal remedies, dietary supplements, and how they work

Safety concerns, including special precautions and warnings
Information on interactions with medications, foods, and other herbs and supplements
Dosages that have been studied in scientific research
The content from NMCD replaces the Natural Standard monographs that were previously on MedlinePlus.

Briscoe Library elevator upgrades are now underway

UT Health Science Center Facilities has begun a project to replace the motors of the two main elevators in the
Briscoe Library. Work began on October 13 with the right side elevator, labeled L2. Repair of the left side
elevator, L1, will begin on November 22. Most of the work will be done on the 2nd floor in the machine room
behind the elevators. Library staff will monitor the noise levels and ask Facilities to stop if the noise gets too
loud, especially during phase exams and finals. A conservative estimate for completion is the end of February.
