ON THE GROUND RELIEF

Email Excerpt From Kathy Anne Weir, LPN,
HPP Medical Team Volunteer (Picture above with wounded child)
Tuesday, January 26, 2010

Hi Yve,
I am well and feel like in the 2 days we were here we really have
made a contribution. It is sad but we feel very useful. In 24 hours
we have seen a rough estimate of 200 patients counting inside the
hospital and those in the hospital tents.

Our first day: we went to tents-dressing open wounds or post op

wounds, deciding who needs MD to evaluate for O.R. (for either
debridement or amputation) And also making sure folks had
antibiotics.

We worked inside the hospital in triage, pre-op, post op. The

first day we arrived at the hospital at 9am and left the next day
at 7:30pm, but I did sleep in the staff room for 2 or 3 hours.
Now that Dave (another member of medical team) made sure
there was no longer a shortage on night shift, there should be a
more manageable schedule. Dave has become one of the hospital
administrators and helps to run the hospital.

As a whole the hospital has done mostly ortho surgery and delivered
a few babies. Sadly we have a few of the deceased outside and
their limbs; there is the issue of disposing of them as expected.
But it’s not nearly as bad as at ground zero where there are many
lined up. I’m not tryng to be gross or disrespectful or anything-just
giving you a picture out OUR hospital in particular.

We REALLY really really need nurses! Tomorrow if you can send

them!! ) We are really really desperate for nurses so pls. post that
also on the website. There are tons of docs doing surgery, etc but
few nurses to do OR nursing, pre-op post-op, triage, wound care,
vitals, give pain meds & antibiotics, IV fluids, etc.

OUR NEXT STEPS
HPP is currently analyzing reports from Haiti and is in discussion with several existing and new
partners to develop long-term initiatives. Haiti still needs help. While some international entities
are leaving, Haiti is currently in a dilapidated state.

The Haitian Professionals of Philadelphia cordially invites you to be part of Hati’s glorious re-
building process. Everyone has a role to play. From the girl scouts of Hope Baptist Church selling
cookies to raise money for Haiti, to the young man who will make Haiti his Bat Mitzvah Volunteer
project, to the North Philadelphia Dream Center nonprofit agency seeking to directly re-build
homes; we all can help uplift a country that should be praised for its substantial contributions to
democracy.

With goals of rebuilding Haiti and providing resources to the Haitian Community in Philadelphia,
HPP is happy to announce that the Greater Philadelphia Urban Affairs Coalition (GPUAC)
will be one it’s chief and key strategic partners. GPUAC & HPP has established a fund to support
Haitian relief and rebuilding efforts. This fund will provide resources to organizations on the
frontlines that are helping the Haitian people to rebuild their communities and lives. GPUAC
unites government, business, neighborhoods, and individual initiative to improve the quality of
life in the region, build wealth in urban communities, and solve emerging issues. With over 40
years of experience in the field, HPP is thankful for GPUAC’s support and guidance.

The Haitian flag says “L’union Fait La Force” which means, “With Unity There is Power”.
Never has our national motto been so important, as it invigorates the Haitian spirit and provides
encouragement for a better Haiti. Continue to keep us in prayer and please visit our website
www.hpphilly.org for information on: upcoming events, fundraisers, photos of our work in
Haiti, how to become a member and partner of HPP, and mostly importantly how to celebrate
the Haitian culture and its spirit of resiliency.
