Middlebury College (Vt.) Leads First Set of Division IIILearfield Sports Directors’ Cup Standings
CLEVELAND
– Middlebury College (Vt.) is currently atop the Division III standings after the firstfall Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup rankings. The Panthers lead Washington University (Mo.) by16 points, 252-236. Middlebury finished first in women’s cross country, fifth in field hockey, 17
th
inwomen’s volleyball and 21
st
at the men’s cross country championship.The Bears of Washington (Mo.) tallied three top-10 finishes, including a runner-up finish at thewomen’s cross country championship. Washington also finished third in women’s volleyball andninth in men’s cross country.Calvin College (Mich.) has 229 points after capturing the women’s volleyball crown, recording aneighth place showing in men’s cross country and 9
th
place finish at the women’s cross countrychampionship.In fourth place is New York University with 151 points. The Violets of NYU finished fifth inwomen’s volleyball, 10
th
in men’s cross country and 28
th
in women’s cross country, bringing theirpoint total to 151.Rounding out the top five are Cortland State (N.Y.) and Geneseo State (N.Y.), who are currentlytied at 148 points apiece. The Dragons of Cortland State (N.Y.) finished ninth in field hockey, 15

 in women’s cross country and 17
th
in volleyball. The Knights of Geneseo State (N.Y.) finishedseventh in men’s cross country, 12

in women’s cross country and 17

in field hockey.Four of the seven fall NCAA Division III championships have been completed with the followinginstitutions capturing titles: men’s cross country - Haverford (Pa.); women’s cross country -Middlebury (Vt.); women’s volleyball - Calvin (Mich.); field hockey – Bowdoin (Maine).The Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup was developed as a joint effort between the NationalAssociation of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and
USA Today 
. Points are awardedbased on each institution's finish in up to 14 sports -- seven women’s and seven men’s.The next Division III standings will be released Thursday, December 9.
