Apollo
SoyuzTestProject
(ASTP)
is
a
joint
endeavor
of
the
UnitedStatesand
the
Soviet
Union
as
partof
theagreement
on
cooperationin
space
which
President
Nixon
and
ChairmanKosygin
signedin
MoscoW
in
May
of
1972.
Bothcountrieshave
agreed
to
develop
compatible
rendezvous
and
docking
systems
which
will
pro-
vide
a
basisfor
docking
and
rescue
onfuturespacecraft
of
both
nations,and
to
conduct
a
joint
experimentalmis-
sionin
mid-1975torendezvous
and
dock
a
manned
Apollo
spacecraft
with
a
mannedSoyuz-typespacecraft
totest
thesedocking
systems
inorbit.
Eachnation
is
separately
developingdocking
systemsbased
on
a
mutually
agreeablesingle
setof
interfacedesign
specifications.The
majornew
U.S.
program
elements
are
the
DockingModule
and
dockingsystemnecessaryto
achievecompatibi-
lity
of
rendezvous
and
docking
systems
with
theUSSR-
developedhardwareto
be
used
on
a
Soyuz
spacecraft.
The
DockingModule
and
systemtogetherwith
an
Apollo
Command
and
Service
Module
(CSM)
will
be
launcned
on
a
Saturn
IB
launch
vehicle.
The
Docking
Module
and
the
docking
system
will
be
stowedin
the
spacecraft
launchvehicle
adapterand
extracted
by
the
CSM
while
in
Earth
orbit
in
a
manner
similar
to
that
used
with
the
Lunar
Moduleon
an
Apollo
lunarmission.The
ASTP
missionwillincludetesting
a
compatible
rendezvoussystem
in
orbit;
testing
thecompatible
docking
systems;
verifyingtechniques
for
transfer
of
astronauts
and
cosmonauts;
conducting
experimentswhiledocked
andundocked;
developingexperience
for
the
conduct
of
poten-tial
joint
flights
by
U.S.
andUSSR
spacecraft,
including,
in
case
of
necessity,
rendering
aidinemergencysituations.
Joint
US/USSRworkinggroups
have
beenmeeting
on
a
scheduledbasis
toreview
andagree
on
the
technical
and
operational
aspects
of
the
joint
project.
