Assignment No. 3 &4B.Tech Mechanical EngineeringThird year
Discuss the various types of power threads. Give at least two practical applications for each type.Discuss their relative advantages and disadvantages.2.
Show that the efficiency of self-locking screws is less than 50 percent.3.
A vertical two start square threaded screw of a 100 mm mean diameter and20 mm pitch supports avertical load of 18 kN. The axial thrust on the screw is taken by a collarbearing of 250 mm outsidediameter and 100 mm inside diameter. Find the force required at the endof a lever which is 400 mmlong in order to lift and lower the load. The coefficient of friction for thevertical screw and nut is 0.15and that for collar bearing is 0.20.4.
A power screw having double started square threads of 25 mm nominal diameter and 5 mm pitch isacted upon by an axial load of 10 kN. The outer and inner diameters of screw collar are 50 mm and 20mm respectively. The coefficient of thread friction and collar friction may be assumed as 0.2 and 0.15respectively. The screw rotates at 12 r.p.m. Assuming uniform wear condition at the collar andallowable thread bearing pressure of 5.8 N/mm2, find: 1. the torque required to rotate the screw; 2. thestress in the screw; and 3. the number of threads of nut in engagement with screw. 5.
A screw jack is to lift a load of 80 kN through a height of 400 mm. The elastic strength of screwmaterial in tension andcompression is 200 MPa and in shear 120 MPa. The material fornut is phosphor- bronze for which the elastic limit may be taken as 100 MPa in tension, 90 MPa in compression and 80MPa in shear. The bearing pressure between the nut and the screw is not to exceed 18 N/mm2. Designand draw the screw jack. The design should include the design of 1. Screw, 2. Nut, 3. Handle and cupand 4bodies.6.
Find the efficiency of the following riveted joints :a)
Single riveted lap joint of 6 mm plates with 20 mm diameter rivets having a pitch of 50 mm. b)
Double riveted lap joint of 6 mm plates with 20 mm diameter rivets having a pitch of 65 mm.AssumePermissible tensile stress in plate = 120 MPaPermissible shearing stress in rivets = 90 MPaPermissible crushing stress in rivets = 180 MPa7.
An eccentrically loaded lap riveted joint is to be designed for a steel bracket asShown
The bracket plate is 25 mm thick. All rivets are to be of the same size. Load on the bracket, P = 50 kN ;rivet spacing, C = 100 mm; load arm, e = 400 mm. Permissible shear stress is 65 MPa and crushingstress is 120 MPa. Determine the size of the rivets to be used for the joint
