Editor’s Preface
The present volume on
anattā
concludes the treatment of
The Three Basic Facts of Existence
(or TheThree Characteristics) within
The Wheel
series. Though the Buddha’s teaching on not-self has been treated quite often in these publications, it was felt that some more material from sourcesnot easily accessible to the general reader should be offered here. From different angles, theseessays and translations will throw light on that central teaching of Buddhism,
anattā
. As in theearlier books on
anicca
and
dukkha
, this volume also concludes with a concise and systematictreatment of the subject by the late venerable Ñāṇamoli Thera, which is a valuable guide to thesource material as well as to a deeper study of this profound doctrine. The diverse renderings chosen by the individual authors for the key term anattā or
nairātmya
(Skt.) have been retained. Hence it should be understood by the reader that the terms“egolessness,” “soullessness,” “impersonality,” and “not-self” all stand for the Pali term
anattā
(Sanskrit:
anātma
or
nairātmya
).Nyanaponika Thera3
