Chiroptera (bats) Brazilian free-
tailed bat
Chiroptera is one of mammals.
Chiroptera live in tropical areas. This mammal usually eat fruits,
insects, or suck other animals’ blood. Chiroptera or bats sleep at days
and awake at nights. They know where their preys are by using
ultrasonic wave or using their eyes.
Bats have light skeleton, so that they can fly. Their wings are
actually a membrane which wraps their arms and covers the space
between their fingers (except their thumbs). They can fold their
membrane so it won’t be a problem when they walk on the ground.
The membrane is also the place where their blood temperature
decreases so their body temperature won’t be too high when they fly.
When they are not flying, the amount of blood which flow in their
wings also decreases.
Their habitat is influencing their fur color. Species which live
in forests or other place (but not in the caves) are usually light brown
in color, but there are also some species that have bright or dark
patterns or strips on their body, head, or wings. Their color helps
them to camouflage from their enemies. But the bats which live in
the caves usually don’t have color patterns. Their fur is usually light
brown. But their color is actually not too important because caves are
less bright.
Chiroptera order divided into two, Megachiroptera (the big
bats) and Microchiroptera (the small bats).
Microchiroptera are only 3,5 – 100 gr in their weights. They
have scary face and they usually know where their preys are by using
ultrasonic wave.
Megachiroptera are 25 – 900 gr in their weights. They have big
eyes that are good for looking at night and claw on their thumb and
second finger. Most members of this suborder have dog- like face.
They use their big eyes instead of ultrasonic wave to find their preys.
