The sights and sounds of one of the most famous music festivals in
history come to life in this extraordinary compilation of photogra-

Love’s biggest event. It is the definitive book on the unprecedented
gathering of folk, pop, soul, and jazz music icons, such as Jimi
Hendrix, Janis Joplin, The Who, and Otis Redding. This chronicle
features a wealth of previously unpublished material from the pro-

Canned Heat. Through hundreds of photographs from notable
artists alongside ephemera and memorabilia, such as programs,
posters, advertisements, and album covers, the book evokes the
magic moment of the festival as the epicenter of a groundbreaking
movement, showcasing it in all its kaleidoscopic glory.

Future Media
Edited by Rick Wilber
• Co-op available
• Author tour to include St. Louis, Missouri, and Reno, Nevada
(August); San Diego (October); and San Francisco (November)
This startling exploration of the mass media age uniquely com-
bines complex nonfiction and prescient fiction from the best and
brightest visionaries of the future. Essay contributors include
Marshall McLuhan, who posited that the medium is the message;
Cory Doctorow and his re-visioning of intellectual property in the
digital age; and Nicolas Carr, whose cautionary warnings include
that Google is making us stupid. The thought-provoking short sto-
ries are authored by science fiction luminaries including James
Tiptree Jr., whose pseudonymous cyperpunk preceded all of her
peers; Joe Haldeman and his wars where humans fight through
cloning and time travel; and Norman Spinrad, who has pitted the
media against an immortality conspiracy. Offering a blend of pre-
dictions for the course of communications, Future Media entertains
while it informs and challenges readers to consider the implications
for a society dealing with networks that are alternately personal,
public, pervasive, and powerful.
Rick Wilber is a college journalism professor and the author of
several college textbooks, including Magazine Feature Writing,
Modern Media Writing, and The Writer’s Handbook for Editing
and Revision. He has published more than 50 science fiction short
stories that have appeared in several anthologies and magazines,

Excellent Adventure
The True Story of a Great American Road Trip
Matthew Algeo
• Co-op available
• New in paper; also available in cloth (9781556527777)
• Previous edition sold more than 20,000 copies
From Missouri to New York and back again, this recounting of an
amazing journey chronicles the road trip of a former president and
his wife and their amusing, failed attempts to keep a low profile.
Diners, bellhops, and cabbies shouted out “Hiya, Harry!” whenever
they recognized the former president, and, out for his daily constitu-
tional on the streets of New York, Harry even stumbled into the
sidewalk shot of the newly launched Today show. Along the way
there are brief detours into relevant topics, such as the postwar
American auto industry, McCarthyism, the development of the
nation’s highway system, and the decline of Main Street America. By
the end of the 2,500-mile journey, readers will have a new and heart-
felt appreciation for America’s last citizen-president. This edition
also includes a new afterword from the author, who has now located
Truman’s long-lost Chrysler New Yorker.
Matthew Algeo is an award-winning journalist who has reported
from three continents for public radio’s All Things Considered,
Marketplace, and Morning Edition. He is the author of Last Team

Wanton West
Madams, Money, Murder, and the Wild Women
of Montana’s Frontier
Lael Morgan
“An important and entertaining addition to gold rush literature.”
—Pierre Berton, historian and author,
on Good Time Girls of the Alaska–Yukon Gold Rush
• Co-op available
• Advertising in Bust, Montana Historical Society Magazine,
Montana Magazine, and Wild West Magazine
Providing new insights into women’s struggle for equality, this
historical study shows the true story of the women of old
Montana. With few career options available in the 19th century,
many of the most independent and enterprising women turned to
the world’s oldest profession for a lucrative source of income.
Author Lael Morgan brings to life the lively and eccentric charac-
ters who tamed the West’s wildest region from the time of the
gold rush to the election of the first woman to U.S. Congress:
Chicago Joe, with her addiction to handsome men and high
finance; Yow Kum, an enslaved Chinese prostitute; the enterpris-
ing, successful black prostitute named Lizzie Hall; and Carmen, a
“full blossomed Spanish rose who would just as soon stick a
stiletto into your gizzard as stand at the bar and have a drink
with you.” An unbiased exploration of an open society and an
unforgettable time in American history, this work showcases how
some of these characters suffered the fate of disease, violence, and
alcohol and drug addiction, while a surprising number prospered.
Lael Morgan is a journalist whose work has appeared in the
Christian Science Monitor, the Los Angeles Times, National
Geographic, and the Washington Post. She teaches media writing
at the University of Texas–Arlington and is the author of several
historical books, including Art and Eskimo Power and Good

Excerpt:
More human remains appear in the fields each year, like skeletons
emerging from their shallow graves. “We see bones of people and
we realize they were killed,” Simon Kabeda, who also lost his fami-
ly, tells me. He says that each time he wanders into the cultivated
fields surrounding the village, he is reminded of that awful day.
Five years have passed since the massacre occurred, and I suggest
that most of the bones probably have been cleared from the fields
and reburied by now.
But Kabeda shakes his head. “We’re afraid to touch the bones.”
Not only is there an instinctual revulsion to handling human
remains, there is a strong taboo. “It’s a psychological problem,” he
says with a nervous smile. “You may touch the bones and there
may be spirits there.” Handling the bones could bring trouble, espe-
cially if you offend the spirits by not being a relative to the

Black Power Music from Blues to Hip-hop
Denise Sullivan
• Co-op available
• Advertising in American Songwriter and Utne Reader
Author Denise Sullivan explores the bond between music and
social change and traces the evolution of protest music over the
past five decades. The marriage of music and social change didn’t
originate with the civil rights and black power movements of the
1950s and 1960s, but never before had the relationship between
the two been so dynamic. Black music altered the road to libera-
tion for minorities, sparking creativity and resulting in a genre-
encompassing poetry, jazz, folk, and rock along with a new brand
of prideful and political soul and funk. Through extensive
research and exclusive interviews with musician-activists such as
Yoko Ono, Richie Havens, Janis Ian, and Buffy Sainte-Marie, this
chronicle details the struggle that went into the creation of libera-
tion music. A bittersweet narrative covering more than 50 years
of fighting oppression through song, Keep On Pushing defines the
soundtrack to revolution and the price paid to create it.

gritty neighborhoods where T. I. and Lil Wayne grew up, and
speaking with DJ Smurf and Ms. Peachez along the way. The cele-

Excerpt:
One night during the recording of We Can’t Be Stopped,
Bushwick Bill’s horror stories came to life. Drunk and stoned,
he paid a visit to a girlfriend and asked her to shoot him in the
face. She balked, he grabbed her baby and threatened it, and
during the ensuing tussle the gun went off and a bullet pierced
his right eyeball. The story is recounted on his solo track, “Ever
So Clear.”
Willie D and Scarface rushed to be with him in the hospital,
and a picture of them wheeling Bill on a gurney—his bandage
pulled down to reveal his bloody eye socket—serves as We
Can’t Be Stopped’s album cover.
Excerpt:

I got a part in Dracula which I finished a couple of months ago. I loved
that. I played Renfield and I had to eat insects. I didn’t actually eat the
insects. I put them in my mouth, kind of like a funhouse for the insects,
and I moved them around and let them walk along my teeth and then I
brought them back out again, just like a roller coaster.
They must have been terrified!
Well, but they were safe. Everybody loves to be terrified when they’re
safe. So I’m hoping that the insects will remember that when I’m in my
grave. They’ll remember how good I was to them.

“Thompson is an accomplished biographer and his attention to
detail and ability to insert relevant information serve him well.”
—Pop Matters on London’s Burning
“How does Dave Thompson know more about bands than they
can remember themselves? His sheer love of music. . . . He can
chronicle the events with a perspective that brings them startling-
ly back to life. Fiercely accurate and detailed, but with a sense of
love and nostalgia to put it all in context, here is a book that
puts the humanity back into punk rock.”
—TV Smith, singer/songwriter, on London’s Burning
Offering a unique analysis and discussion of her life, career, and
work, this is the true story of Patti Smith. Widely acknowledged
as one of the most significant American artists of the rock age,
an acclaimed poet, and a figurehead for many liberal political
causes, Patti Smith went from an ugly-duckling childhood in
postwar New Jersey to become queen of the 1970s New York art
scene. Not a tell-all biography, this measured, accurate, and
enthusiastic account of Smith’s career is written for her loyal
fans as well as for neophytes hungry for a great rock ’n’ roll
story. Guided by interviews with those who have known her—
including Ivan Kral, Tom Verlaine, Richard Lloyd, John Cale,
and Jim Carroll—it relies most of all on Patti’s own words.

Examining the complicated and sometimes controversial history,
goals, and tactics of anticapitalist movements, this compilation
focuses on the meaning of the movement as a whole and exam-
ines the protests that surrounded global trade and political con-
ferences such as the 1999 World Trade Organization meetings in
Seattle and the ongoing G8 summits around the world. The col-
lection offers a broad vision of anticapitalist activism as well as
strategies for instigating change, not only for the individual, but
also for the collective. Featuring popular culture references,
humor, poetry, and essays, this analysis of the counter-summit
movement is ideal for those wanting to explore new possibilities
for mobilization in the midst of crisis.

Excerpt:
The recent antiwar movement contained “moments of excess.” We saw people demonstrating who’d not
been on a demonstration in decades, if ever. Across the UK schoolkids walked out of classes because
they heard that “something” was happening in town. (Often, nothing was happening . . .until they
turned up and started something!) These people were exposed to new experiences and brought new
skills and attitudes, in particular a “do what we want” mentality. They carried no baggage regarding
“what happens” on a demonstration and this frequently made such demos difficult to police (for both
paid cops and organizers) because the new protesters had little knowledge of and respect for the “rules.”
As a result new subjectivities were produced. Another defining characteristic of moments of excess is
that existing methods of mediating people’s desires and demands fail. People don’t stop to think what’s
possible, what’s realistic—and no “expert” is there to help them keep their feet on the ground. Hence
the Paris 1968 slogan “Be Realistic, Demand the Impossible.” In times of heightened activity we simply
pose the only question worth asking: “what sort of life do we want to lead?” Or even “what does it
mean to be human?” And it’s perhaps important to note that moments of excess are not just a modern
phenomenon, they can be traced back through history. During moments of excess (“revolutionary”
moments) we feel more connected to past experiments in new-world construction: to the Italian autono-
mists, the Naxalite rebels, the Paris Communards, the English Diggers. During bursts of revolutionary
creativity we feel “really” connected to our antecedents, not just warming ourselves with their memory.

The announcement of Sarah Palin’s nomination for Vice President of the United States snapped me so hard I
had harsh-reality whiplash. Was it because this woman was so clearly lacking in qualifications, world view and
common sense? No. Did I believe for a moment that this was the brainstorm of John McCain? No. Was I con-
cerned about how infested the Republican Party had become since the 1990s by religious zealots? Absolutely!
Did I see this all coming together before my eyes in an instant with the pick of Palin? Oh did I!
Then as I watched what unfolded on that stage in Minneapolis, Minnesota at the 2008 Republican Convention
where Palin gave her first national speech all I could think of was that this was a shot across the bow of reli-
gious freedom in America. I was not alone in reading this warning and immediately embarked on research
with a group of theological and political authorities across the country which led me to write this book.
I am not an academic, nor a journalist, nor a politician. I am a fourth-generation Alaskan, mother and grand-

who understands politics, studied social psychology and experienced the wave of religious extremism sweep
through Alaska as early as the 1960s, capturing my family in the tide. I am an observer and an activist. I
believe ardently that each and every one of us can make a difference, and I have.

Showcasing a variety of roses, the projects in this collection will both
challenge and instruct tenderfoot artists to improve their painting
techniques. The five step-by-step demonstrations reveal how to paint
roses without having to rely on advanced drawing skills. With an
expressive and bold style that captures the strong, rich hues within the
petals of roses, artist Janet Whittle demystifies watercolor painting.
The projects use a variety of techniques and feature suggested ways of
mixing and matching so that the tracings can be reused to create many
different paintings.

Handbook of Watercolour
Tips & Techniques
Arnold Lowrey, Wendy Jelbert, Geoff Kersey,
and Barry Herniman
• Authors’ previous books sold more than 450,000 copies
Combining four distinct watercolor tips and techniques books,
this richly illustrated, highly informative compilation explores
the versatility and beauty of watercolors in depth. With 19
detailed step-by-step demonstrations, the chapters cover every
aspect of the medium in an easy-to-follow, inspirational way.
Drawing from a vibrant and colorful palette, the guide starts off
with expert advice on all the techniques needed for creating
interesting pictures—from laying initial washes to adding interest
and detail. Transforming sketches into finished paintings is also
reviewed, including advice on capturing special moments, creat-
ing light and shade, and recording happy memories. Highlighting
the importance of perspective in the painting process, the hand-
book shows how to create an impression of depth and distance
using dramatic elements. Finally, an exploration of the effects of
sunlight, shadows, mist, and stormy skies on a range of popular
subjects is performed. An invaluable addition to any artist's
library, this reference depicts the delights of capturing early
morning landscapes, rural buildings, seascapes, and more.
Arnold Lowrey has been painting in a variety of media for more
than 25 years. He exhibits his paintings in Wales and London;
teaches workshops and painting courses; and is a painting
demonstrator for several art material suppliers. Wendy Jelbert is
a teacher and professional artist who works in pastels, oils,
acrylics, inks, and watercolors. Geoff Kersey is an experienced
watercolorist, a teacher, and a demonstrator. He owns an art stu-
dio and exhibits extensively. He has made two watercolor videos
and contributes to various art publications. Barry Herniman is a
member of the Chartered Society of Designers and the owner of
a graphics company. He travels extensively to
lead painting workshops and demonstrations
and has had exhibitions in England, Canada,
and the United States.

Grillo: Abstract
Expressionism
Beyond the Fifties
Foreword by Donald Kuspit
Filled with images of the vivid and luminous
paintings that artist John Grillo is best known
for, this vibrant exploration observes the many
facets of the artist’s abstract expressionist work.
Spanning the years between the 1950s and the
late 1960s, more than 60 color plates showcase
Grillo’s abilities to express pure emotion on
canvas via color and texture, to embrace “acci-
dents,” and to celebrate painting itself as a com-
municative action. Art students, historians, and
collectors will savor this brilliant collection and
the distinct perspective it offers for viewing the
breadth of Grillo’s contributions to the abstract
expressionist movement.
Donald Kuspit is a distinguished professor of art
history and philosophy at the State University of
New York–Stony Brook and a contributing edi-
tor to Artforum, New Art Examiner, Sculpture,
and Tema Celeste, as well as an editor of Art
Criticism. He is the author of numerous articles
and several books, including April Gornik, The

Grillo: Expressionism
Figurative Works
Foreword by Robert A. Whyte
Artist John Grillo’s contributions to the expres-
sionist movement from the 1980s through the
present are explored in this colorful examination
of his work. Through the use of color and texture
and by embracing “accidents,” Grillo was known
for relaying his expression of pure emotion
directly onto the canvas. More than 60 color
plates of the artist’s figurative theme works,
including “Circus,” “El Dorado,” “Tango,”
“Jealousy,” “Opera,” and the “Marilyn” series,
are included in this compendium and offer the
unique opportunity to observe the artist’s emo-
tion firsthand. Art historians, students, and
enthusiasts will appreciate this complete, modern
collection of a seminal artist’s work.
Robert A. Whyte is the curator emeritus of the

“Don’t pay any attention to him, Ned,” the man said. “He’s crazy.”
I hear that a lot. I wanted to kill him. I usually carry a gun for just such occasions, but they are no longer allowed on commercial
flights, so I rammed the heel of my hand upward, into his nose and drove the bone into his brain, such as it was.
Well, then, all hell broke loose. So to speak. First of all, there was the blood; you hardly ever see blood on a commercial flight.
And then he was making this honking noise, trying to breathe and spraying blood all over the magazines in the seat pocket, and
the back of the seat as well. Then he jerked once and died, but it was too late. All the other passengers were standing up, trying
to get out of their seats, which are all jammed together, economy class wise, so it was like a little mini-riot. And here was the
stewardess, excuse me, flight attendant, back again.
“Sir, sir,” she was saying, meaning, of course, me. One only gets called “sir” by cops and such, so I got alarmed. Sure enough,
there was a big guy behind me, trying to grab my arms and waving plastic handcuffs.
You can imagine the chaos. I figured it was time to split. The big guy wasn’t so big with a fork in his carotid; even a plastic fork
will do if you know how to wield it. I jammed him face down between the seats to bleed out and grabbed the gun out his ankle
holster, and there’s nothing like a gun, even a little one, to cool things out. It’s like waving a magic wand. Everybody got real quiet.
Even the kid was quiet. The “Ned.” He was watching me like a hawk or maybe an owl, all owl-eyed.

When Julia Hernandez leaves her husband, shoots a real estate developer,
and then vanishes without a trace, she slips out of the world she knew
and into the Simulacrum—a place where human history is both guided
and thwarted by the conflict between a species of anarchist wasps and a
collective of hyperintelligent spiders. When Julia’s ex-husband Raymond
spots her in a grocery store he doesn’t usually patronize, he’s soon drawn
into an underworld of radical political gestures where Julia is the new
media sensation of both this world and the Simulacrum. Told ultimately
from the collective point of view of another species, this allegorical
novel plays with the elements of the Simulacrum apparent in real life—
media reports, business speak, blog entries, text messages, psychological-
evaluation forms, and the lies lovers tell one another—and poses a
fascinating idea that displaces human beings from the center of the
universe and makes them simply the pawns of two warring species.
Nick Mamatas is the author of the novels Move Under Ground and
Under My Roof, as well as the short story collection You Might Sleep.
His writing has been translated into German, Italian, and Greek, and
he has been nominated for the Bram Stoker and International Horror
Guild Awards and the Kurd Lasswitz Prize. He is the coeditor of the

Excerpt:
Finally, Julia turned back to her work, more careful than before, her arms taffy from the scraping of the soap to form those thick
wide letters. Every soap wrapper, each little cardboard box, was placed back into one of the plastic bags from the convenience stores.
Y was triumphant, a cheerleader with arms splayed, holding pom-poms. The Us were easy, almost soothing, though they required
extensive kneeling. Sadly, Julia had to make the O as a U with a little half-oval on top. The round joviality of O was beyond the
medium of concrete and soap, at least given the work that had come before.
When Julia was done with the message, she turned and tried to pull the tarps from the scaff olding, but her hands were still slippery
and her fingers weak and stiff from all the grasping. She tugged hard and nearly stomped her foot. Julia had to swallow that urge,
just to avoid falling from the scaffold and hitting the two paths on the way down to the sidewalk. Still determined, she lowered
herself down, one level at a time, like an infant scooting down a flight of steps on legs and butt, till she hit the Dumpster with a
satisfying thud. She opened the flap that she wasn’t standing atop, and instantly found a shark-finned shard of cement. After a quick
rinse of her hands in puddle water, and drying them against her blouse, it was back up the scaffolding, and the slicing went easy.

A Novel of World War II Flygirls
Karl Friedrich
• Co-op available
Based on the true World War II stories of America’s first female military
pilots, this historic novel follows the story of a young woman from a
dirt-poor farm family. Sally Ketchum has little chance of bettering
her life until a mysterious barnstormer named Tex teaches her to fly
and to dare to love. But when Tex dies in a freak accident, Sally must
make her own way in the world. She enrolls in the U.S. military’s
Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) program at a special school
known as Avenger, where she learns to fly the biggest, fastest, meanest
planes. She also reluctantly becomes involved with Beau Bayard, a
flight instructor and aspiring writer who seems to offer her every-
thing she could want. Despite her obvious mastery of flying, many
members of the military are unable to accept that a “skirt” has any
place in a cockpit. Soon Sally finds herself struggling against a high-
powered Washington lawyer that wants to close down Avenger once
and for all.
Karl Friedrich has worked as a newspaper reporter, a magazine and
public relations writer, an advertising copywriter, and a photographer,
among a variety of other things. He lives in Camas, Washington.

Excerpt:
The last trace of fun tightened out of Dixie’s face. “I hope you’ll forgive me, hon, but you wouldn’t be my first pick from a crowd of
strangers to be a pilot.”
She didn’t care if Dixie had a thousand hours of flying time, and money to burn. She wasn’t going to let anyone call her a liar. “And
you wouldn’t be my first, nor for that matter my last, pick as someone to go barnstorming with,” she snarled. “I doubt you’d last one
night in a cornfield with no plumbing and a breakfast of cold beans, while you hoped and prayed for enough paying passengers
before sundown to eat as well again the next morning.”
All the parts of Dixie’s face snapped to a dead stop. “You’re a barnstormer? You made money flyin’? Is that what you’re sayin’ ?”
Her eyes bulged.
“Texas!” Sally said. “Oklahoma! Arkansas! For six months, for about three-hundred hours. Yes, that’s what I’m saying. I don’t know
how many hours exactly because we were too busy flying to keep count.” Her nose always ran when she lost her temper. She reached
into the pocket of her dress for a handkerchief but came up empty.
An expensive piece of embroidered cloth appeared in Dixie’s hand.
Sally took the handkerchief and blew her nose, then carefully refolded the cloth.
Dixie stuffed the piece back into her bag without as much as a glance. “Are you married, honey ?”
Sally turned away to the window. She wanted to be alone.
“Gum?” In the reflection of the glass, Dixie was holding out two sticks, a rare commodity for a civilian in wartime rationing. Sally
wondered where she’d gotten it.
She shook her head.
Dixie nudged, “The gum or being married?”

In 480 BC, the young Athenian Nikomachos arrives in
Artemisium—the cape north of Euboea, Greece—to settle the
score for the death of his father and brother in the first Persian
invasion of Greece. He serves as lieutenant to the Athenian
general and politician, Themistokles, whose arsenal includes
bluff, bribery, and outright intimidation and fuels Nikomachos’s
fire for vengeance. They witness the second Persian invasion:
the three-day clash for control of the straits and find cracks in
the facade of the Greek alliance of city-states as 300 Spartans
face the invading hordes of Persians. At the end of the third day,
the bloodied and battered Greeks receive the grim news that
the Persians broke through and slaughtered the king and his
Spartans; the road to Athens now stands wide open and its freedom
and democracy is at stake. As Nicomachos is full of rage,
Themistokles must now decide whether to keep up the fight or

Ignorance is a good way to buy time, and I’m a natural at playing dumb. I shouted to Tezo over the crowd, “What’s the goal?”
“The what?”
“Knockout? Submission?”
His eyes got sleepier. “Please. All that scar tissue on your head and you don’t know where you are?” He kept his eyes on me and
pointed at Jairo. “You, kill him.” Reversed the eyes and finger: “You, kill him.”
“What are the rules?”
Tezo pulled the chrome revolver out of his pants. “I’ll let you know if you do something wrong. But, you know. Don’t hold your
breath, huh? Now let’s see something or one of you is fighting on one leg.”
Jairo took another step forward. Didn’t step back. Kept coming. By the time I realized he wasn’t going to stop, I was almost cornered
in my end. He had a wide stance to keep from slipping in the muck. My left leg wanted to zip into his groin, but I made it stay planted
and pushed off to my right. His hands reached out, looking like they did part-time work dropping cars into crushing machines, and I
slapped them away as I slid around his left side and ended up at his end of the pit. He stood at my end, shook his arms loose, rolled
his neck, and came at me again.
He spread his arms out to their full wingspan; it looked like he could have tickled both walls. He closed in like a trash compactor,
like a hawk zeroing in for the bash and snag. The crowd started making screeching sounds, their arms out. Jairo crossed the middle
ground into my space, his eyes on mine to see where I was going. I looked left; he leaned that way. I darted right; he was already
there. He got his left hand on my shirt and pulled me in. We were close to the bleacher wall. The light changed as people crowded the
edge to look down on us.
Jairo shot his right hand around, grabbed the back of my belt, snaked his left hand over my right shoulder, got another handful of
shirt, and hugged me close. I dropped to avoid getting hip-tossed into the sludge.

When a bout of food poisoning strikes a residence for lively seniors
blessed with generous pensions and high-ranking political connec-
tions, Dr. Zol Szabo, public health doctor turned medical detective,
assembles his investigative team. But the epidemic’s source proves
elusive; the death count rises and when the scourge threatens
someone close to Zol, he calls in his friend and colleague Hamish
Wakefield, a microbe connoisseur with a nose for exotic diagnoses.
Though Hamish uncovers other dangers, he can’t crack the puzzle,
and neither can the health unit’s outbreak-hunting whiz kid. It
takes the observant octogenarians to expose the deaths for what
they really are: a string of murders. Fast-paced and intricately
plotted, Tampered is second in a series of books to feature Dr. Zol
Szabo and his quirky surrounding cast of mystery-solving public
health officials.

smoked himself into an early grave, sparkled with wisdom and wit in defiance of his age and physical restrictions. Best of all, Art
and his tablemates never let political correctness get in the way of a candid opinion or a good story.
But today, Zol saw only clinical diagnoses smouldering through the retirement residence: the wobbly knees of rheumatoid arthritis,
the stooped backs of osteoporosis, the trembling hands of Parkinson’s, the vacant eyes of macular degeneration.
Zol forced another smile at Art, who was taking his place at the piano in the sitting room on the other side of the archway. Zol
hoped Art was well enough to play. He’d looked pale and drawn when he’d greeted Zol a few minutes ago and confessed he’d
been hit by another bout of fever and the runs earlier in the week. That made it his third bout in the past couple of months.
And he wasn’t the only one. Dozens of others had been hit with the same bug. Art denied any headache, thank goodness. When
headache compounded the fever and diarrhea, the result was lethal. In the past month alone, two of the converted mansion’s
thirty-eight residents had died within hours of a blinding headache compounding their explosive stools.

The Impala smoothly drove past the Gardiner Expressway, south on Cherry Street. Nastos turned left, following a sign for the
Cherry Beach Park. Away from the streetlights, on the north side of Lake Ontario, a person can look south and see not much of
anything but open water. Although there was a tree line about a mile south of shore from the Toronto Islands, the combination of
thickening mist and blackness from overcast skies erased any contrasts in the black of night. It was as though nothing existed
beyond a fifty-metre radius.
“I don’t recognise this part of town—where are we?” Harper asked.
Nastos put the car in park, turned the lights off and sat there. The outside world had disappeared. The detective turned and spoke
to Harper in hushed tones. “Listen, I’m going to make this really easy for you. Tell me who those two guys are in those pictures,
the pictures where you’re raping that little kid.”
Harper let out an awkward laugh with a this guy is kidding me, right? expression on his face. Then his twisted smile froze as he
wondered what was going to happen next. This was about the time they all did that. “My lawyer’s going be all over this guy if he
touches me,” he said, barely audibly, as if ready to confront the fear signals his body was no doubt sending him. More forcefully,
Harper said, “Get me my lawyer. Take me to the police station so I can make my call.”

Covering the essential tactic and art of striking in a series of blows,
this guide illustrates how today’s best mixed martial arts fighters
have discovered the devastating effect of “punches in bunches,” or
strike combinations—a mix that includes fists, kicks, elbows, and
knees. The importance of striking in multiples of three is emphasized
with an explanation of how to stage strikes in order to maximize
load and release, counterstriking, creating angles, and straight striking.
Also included is the tactical role of footwork, how to merge defensive
and offensive moves, and overcoming the various challenges posed
by range. Avoiding a common blend of different styles, this reference
takes the most efficient combinations culled from elite competition
and presents them in stair-stepped drill sets, enabling fighters to utilize
the same striking approaches advocated by the best coaches and
competitors in the business.

Riding Free
Bitless, Bridleless or Bareback
Andrea Eschbach and Markus Eschbach
Demonstrating how to work freely with a horse in its most natu-
ral state, this equestrian guide covers the essentials of minimizing
the use of artificial equipment while riding horses. Whether it’s
riding bitless, bridleless, or without a saddle, research continues
to show that natural riding is gentler and puts less stress on the
horse. The step-by-step instructions in this manual combine
Native American horsemanship with classical training to make
the transition from riding traditionally to riding free gradual and
safe, and helps to develop a more harmonious relationship
between horse and human.
Andrea Eschbach and Markus Eschbach are riding instructors
and horse trainers.

Exploring Human Nature Through the Spirit
of Trees
Joan Klostermann-Ketels
“HumaniTrees offers us the chance to see with new eyes the trees
all around us . . . a real treasure that makes me want to head
straight out to the woods to enjoy a good long walk!”
—Cat Bennett, author, The Confident Creative
“This book opened my eyes to a fresh new perspective on our
forest resource and the individual trees who reside there.”
—Greg Van Fosson, district supervisor, Parks Bureau,
Iowa Department of Natural Resources on PersonaliTrees

The trees featured in this collection are striking in their resem-
blance to humans—they grow, stretch, ache, bend, and break;
provide protection and comfort; and express tenderness and
love—offering readers a new perspective of and appreciation for
the natural environment. The photographs reveal and identify
not only recognizable emotions in the branches and trunks but
also the extent of what trees do for humanity, such as clean the
air and shade homes and gardens. The images also speak to the
spiritual grandeur of trees, encouraging a greater consciousness
of the fundaments of nature and of humankind’s relationship to
something greater than themselves.

spirit, and the author of PersonaliTrees. She lives in Eldora, Iowa.
