Minutes from Meeting June 14, 2010

Attendees: David W., Maria C, Cassie P., Andrew E., Alison F., Mary

Agenda items:

Roles and Responsibilities of Steering Committee elected positions

• Vice-Chair’s responsibility of developing 6-10 topics would be for


steering committee educational purposes only

• some meetings can be business-oriented & some education-


oriented (professional development)

• remain flexible

• change to Chairperson role’set agenda’ rather than ‘create &


publish.’ All items for agenda must be approved by Chairperson

• Members are comfortable with roles as defined

• Length of term at this point is 6 months for each position

• For leadership, steering committee members will step up to take


on roles without a formal election unless needed

• Committee elected persons:

o Andrew----Outreach ICL

o Cassie---Legal ICL

o Maria---Vice Chairperson

o Mary Beth---Secretary

Mission and Vision

• rethinking the wording of the Vision: “South Philly Food Co-op


serves as a hub for healthy eating….”

• can we be a hub if we reference “other co-ops nationwide?”

• hold off on revising Vision statement until January/first Board


elections (first assignment of newly-elected Board)

• Mission statement is ratified by the steering committee and


ready to be shared by Andrew to Outreach Committee

Presentation of Census Data

• Rose: Southeastern PA Household Health Survey

o data can’t be used in any documentation w/out fee of $25

o data is self-reported by phone

o Linguistic Isolation Data----all zip codes show a large


number of ESL

o 62.1% do not participate in groups, 17.7% feel like they


don’t belong in neighborhood---good to think of when
marketing the co-op

o Can we get income distribution—specific to ward


perhaps?

• Jaime: Health Statistics for South Philadelphia

o 2006 data shows that largest health concerns are Heart


Disease and Cancer

o in 2006 --24% of South Philly were at 100% of the Poverty


line

o large birthrate—should we think about carrying baby


products/outreach and education for new mothers/pre-
natal health?

o maybe talk to Food Trust on how people spend money on


food ------Julia will talk to them

o can we get a sample Feasibility Study? What are


the specific questions that we want to know?

Update communication to general email list

• all emails should come from Gmail address – forward emails to


another account to keep up easily

• add a ‘tell a friend’ aspect to the first email

• Alison will send out draft revision of email to Google Group on


Thursday for Steering Committee to approve by Monday
Legal/Finance Committee Update

• Cassie: for next time—set up structure for committee similar to


Steering Committee

• committee will begin to educate themselves on what they need


to do and come up with a timeline

• meetings are every 4th Tuesday

Outreach Committee Update

• they have a brochure put together---will need to update website


and Mission Statement to reflect new wording

MAFCA (Mid-Atlantic Food Co-op Alliance) meeting

• 3 members of our co-op can attend—if we need people to attend,


open it to other committee members

• Park Slope is members-only---hard to get in

• Flatbush co-op is more open

Very important to stay open and tolerant of membership & keep


politics out of it

Mayor’s Office of Sustainability meeting—report on Sustainability at


Academy of Natural Sciences---RSVP only on Thursday, June 17th
