Awareness of Bangladeshi people regarding HIVAIDS 1
Awareness of Bangladeshi people regarding HIV AIDS.
Awareness of Bangladeshi people regarding HIVAIDS 2Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a retrovirus that can lead to acquiredimmunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), a condition in humans in which the immunesystem begins to fail, leading to life-threatening opportunistic infections. Infection withHIV occurs by the transfer of blood, semen, vaginal fluid, pre-ejaculate, or breast milk.Within these bodily fluids, HIV is present as both free virus particles and virus withininfected immune cells. The four major routes of transmission are unprotected sexualintercourse, contaminated needles, and transmission from an infected mother to her babyat birth, or through breast milk. HIV infection in humans is now pandemic. As of January2006, the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) and the WorldHealth Organization (WHO) estimate that AIDS has killed more than 25 million peoplesince it was first recognized on December 1, 1981, making it one of the most destructive pandemics in recorded history. In 2006 alone, AIDS claimed an estimated 2.4±3.3 millionlives, of which more than 570,000 were children. It is estimated that about 0.6% of theworld's living population is infected with HIV. A third of these deaths are occurring insub-Saharan Africa, retarding economic growth and increasing poverty. According tocurrent estimates, HIV is set to infect 90 million people in Africa. In the Asia-Pacificregion which has the second highest number in the world of people living withHIV/AIDS, Bangladesh is fortunate to be one of the countries where the prevalence rateof HIV infection is low. Although the percentages of HIV AIDS patients are low inBangladesh, it has significant threat if the common people are not aware of thisdangerous disease. However, continuing high risk behavior among male and female sexworkers and their clients, transgender, men having sex with men, injecting drug users(IDUs), high rate of STIs and low condom use, all contribute to the threat of the spread of
Awareness of Bangladeshi people regarding HIVAIDS 3epidemic unless critical preventive efforts are initiated to avert it in the general population. UNAIDS estimated that approximately 15,000 Bangladeshis could have beenliving with HIV at the end November 2007. This is a critical moment in the fight againstHIV/AIDS in Bangladesh. The number of reported cases is growing, India andneighboring countries in Southeast Asia face major outbreaks, and there is a good deal of migration across national borders. Rather than insisting on rights-based measures showneffective in combating the further spread of HIV/AIDS, the government both commitsand condones rights violations likely to do just the opposite. Sex workers and men whohave sex with men, politically vulnerable groups at heightened risk of HIV infection areregularly abducted, raped, gang-raped, beaten, and subjected to extortion by the policeand by powerful criminals. While overall HIV prevalence is still low, prevalence is higher in risk groups suchas sex workers, injecting drug users and men who have sex with men. So it¶s necessary toresearch on the population of Bangladesh about their knowledge on HIV/AIDS asknowledge is considered as a major risk factor to spread HIV virus. So, I intend toreaserch that how much knowledge the bangladeshi people have on HIV/AIDS.
