WHAT IS THE REDD COUNTRIESDATABASE?
The REDD Countries Database is a centralisedand collaborative database of the diverse andrapidly evolving range of ongoing REDDReadiness activities in tropical forest owningnations. Organized and aggregated by country,it summarises key information across a rangeof areas including policies, plans, statistics andactivities. The REDD Countries Database doesnot attempt to assess activities or offer any kind of normative analysis but will instead usea common analytical framework to allow quick comparison within and between countries.
WHO IS INVOLVED?
The REDD Countries Database is acollaboration between the Global Canopy Programme (GCP), the Forum on Readinessfor REDD (and its secretariat the AmazonEnvironmental Research Institute - IPAM), Alternatives to Slash and Burn (ASB), theInstitute for the Conservation and SustainableDevelopment of Amazonas (IDESAM) and theCenter for People and Forests (RECOFTC).The GCP and Forum, as well as beingcofounders for the REDD desk, providesecretariat services for the REDD CountriesDatabase; ASB, IDESAM and RECOFTC areregional partners, gathering and synthesisingdata from Africa, Latin America, and SE Asiarespectively.
WHO IS THE DATABASE FOR?
Stakeholders in the REDD process haveoverwhelmingly expressed the need for acentral clearinghouse of information tocapture and catalogue resources, share bestpractices, and facilitate global stakeholdercollaboration. This need has been identified by diverse civil society actors, stated formally by Parties and observers to the UNFCCC, and has been better understood through detailedsurveys and workshops with the REDDstakeholder community conducted by theForum on Readiness for REDD and the GlobalCanopy Programme.
WHAT INFORMATION IS AVAILABLE?
Following on from a series of consultationsand workshops, the REDD Countries Databasepresents information across eight key areas.
Dashboard
The dashboard provides a snapshot overview of the state of REDD Readiness within a

country. The dashboard presents the key elements of REDD readiness within a country graphically using simple icons and charts.
Readiness Overview
The Readiness Overview aims to provide asummary of a country’s REDD readinessacross seven key elements. The elementsprovide a way to compare REDD readinessacross different countries as well as withincountries. The elements, which have beenarrived at from a series of workshops andconsultations, are as follows:
Governance

What are the institutional arrangements? What is the coordinationacross institutions?
Stakeholder Engagement

Who are thestakeholders and how are they beinginformed, consulted and included in the process? Has there been free, prior and informed consent?
Rights and Tenure

How are issues of rights and tenure addressed?

How is REDD beingenforced?
Methodologies:
What methodological approaches are being used including thecalculation of reference levels and co-benefits?

Statistics
The statistics section draws on informationsuch as the FAO Forest Resource Assessmentand the World Bank’s World DevelopmentReport to provide detailed information onforest cover, deforestation rates and forestownership, as well as key socioeconomicindicators including GDP, governance andpopulation density.
Institutions
The institutions section provides an overview of key governmental, NGO, IGO, private sectorand academic institutions working in acountry. This section covers institutions thatare active in REDD within a country and cantherefore include international and donorinstitutions.
Legal Framework
Relevant REDD, climate change, naturalresource management and rights and tenurelaws have been summarised in the legalframework section. Laws are grouped intointernational, national, and state level laws with links to source documents where they areavailable.
Policies and Plans
This section summarises government policiesand plans for REDD. Policies and plans are both non-legally binding, and can be at eitherthe national or state level. Plans aresummarised using the elements of REDDelaborated on above.
Activities
The activities section presents key informationon national, state and project level activities. Activities are also summarised using theelements of REDD. In addition, for carbonproject activities, specific project-levelinformation is also captured.
Financing
The financing section shows the institutionsthat are financing REDD activities within acountry. Donors can be both governmental andnon-governmental as well as domestic or
