Sehaye 1Luwam SehayeDr. RiemanEnglish 110323 October, 2010
Self assessment:
I
feel as if
I
did a good job of going over all the topics of the paper and keepingmy paper organized and straight to the point.
I
need to elaborate more on the goals
I
set for myself and my inquiry paper.
I
feel as if this has been my strongest paper yet and
I
did this bytaking the advice given at the conference and applying it into this paper. My Journey in English 1103When
I
decided to take this class
I
wasn¶t sure what to expect,
I
knew the class would bechallenging but also believed that it would strengthen my writing skills.
I
have experienced andlearned new reading and writing activities such as the writing community groups, forum posts, and day book entries. These activities are new to me and sometimes difficult because
I
don¶tusually like letting other students read and review my work, although
I
know it will improve mywriting skills.
I
also have read and wrote about writing which has caused me to reflect and bemore cautious of the way
I
write. For example, the
I
ntertextuality piece made me think about if and how
I
base my writing off of others ideas, and the Writing Error piece made me becomemore aware of the way
I
read, and realize
I
am more likely to notice an error when
I
am lookingfor it in one of my peers paper rather than a published book or article. The parts of class
I
haveenjoyed the most were reading
The Blue Sweater
, the freedom of the way we write our papers, and The Sponsors of Literacy assignment. We have done a lot of reading in the past few weeks most of which has been long anddifficult to read but
I
enjoyed reading
The Blue Sweater
mostly because it was interesting to hear

Sehaye 2about Novogratz experiences traveling all over Africa and trying, as well as accomplishing, tomake a difference in the world. What
I
also really like about this class is that our papers are notrigidly structured with a minimum number of pages or a five paragraph format. As soon as
I
 started high school every paper
I
wrote looked exactly the same with a specific writing style, paragraph style, number of pages, and annoying rules like don¶t use ³
or conjunctions.
I
wouldget frustrated and often stuck when trying to write a paper because
I
was not able to express mythoughts directly without having to filter or alter some things out of my ideas.
I
n my opinion, writing should be a more open and creative process, and having rigid guidelines can limit some peoples writing abilities. Being able to write freely without so many restrictions has been a relief and makes writing for me easier and more enjoyable.
I
also love being able to finally use theword ³
.Looking back on all the pieces we have wrote, my favorite was the Sponsors of Literacy paper. Although
I
didn¶t like reading the Sponsors of Literacy, writing about it was interesting.Writing about my sponsors made realize
I
have many people to thank for my literacy, andappreciate even more that
I
have had access to all my sponsors. So far
I
feel as if
I
am morecomfortable writing formal papers.
I
feel more challenged by the reading the Writing aboutWriting pieces and posting forums about them, mostly because for me they are difficult tounderstand and stay along with. Regarding peer workshop,
I
feel like it has been productive.
I
t isvery helpful to have your classmates to read and review your work not necessarily ongrammatical errors but by how and where your paper can be improved.Thinking about the work
I
have put in up to this point
I
would call it less thansatisfactory.
I
haven¶t been putting in enough time or effort into my homework assignments or class work and
I
have missed several assignments. My dad would always tell me, ³What you

Sehaye 3give is what you get,
´
and
I
believe that statement applies to my position.
I
realize that my gradeis one hundred percent my responsibility and how much work
I
contribute in the class will bedisplayed when
I
receive my grades.Thinking about the goals stated in the class syllabus,
I
feel
I
have met the one goal statedin the course description which is: ³to understand that academic writing is a complicated, multi-dimensional task
´
.
I
believe
I
accomplished this in high school when
I
had to complete my senior research paper. A twelve page paper is not something that is easily written but takes planningand hard work. Writing requires a lot of critical thinking, reflection, and some skill. However
I
have not nearly met the goals
I
had originally set for myself in this class. As
I
explained earlier
I
am not doing so well so far. Coming in to this class
I
planned on getting an ³A
´
and to stay ontop of all of my work thinking it would be easy.
I
quickly learned that college is not like highschool where you can write a paper the night before it is due and still get a good grade.
I
alsolearned that
I
am going to have to manage my time much better seeing as
I
have not had thismuch freedom before.
I
do plan on however turning this into a learning experience now that
I
 know my mistakes
I
can only improve from here on out.Looking ahead into the rest of the semester
I
am doing my best to be optimistic.
I
know
I
can do a lot better if
I
start giving one hundred percent of my effort, focus, and do all of my work especially for the coming inquiry paper. My
I
nquiry topic is why do people switch dialects or their way of speech when speaking with different people and in different environments.
I
basedmy topic off of the home language writing to explore subject.
I
plan to go into detail about howspeech changes within the classroom, to at home, and with friends and in what way does itchange. For this
I
nquiry paper
I
will take advantage of all my available resources like the writing
