Current Clinical Issues in Primary Care

Dear Colleagues,

From our conversations with clinicians over the past 16 years, we have come to understand how
difficult it is to juggle the responsibilities of your busy practice—from patient care and medical
challenges to budgets and administration—while staying up-to-date on the latest developments,
treatments, and practices in health care. We have listened to your wonderful suggestions and have
developed what we believe is an exceptional program in Fort Lauderdale. We’re delighted to invite you
to Current Clinical Issues in Primary Care, presented at the Pri-Med® South Conference & Exhibition.

This exciting 3-day primary care-focused CME course, developed by the distinguished faculty of
Harvard Medical School and University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, features more than 50
sessions covering disease states, emerging research, public health, and policy issues.

You’ll have an opportunity to hear world-renowned speakers such as John D. Goodson, MD, FACP, who
will present, “The Promise of Primary Care.” On Sunday, William O’Neill, MD will present, “Mending
a Broken Heart—Cardiology in the 21st Century.”

Current Clinical Issues in Primary Care will provide the opportunity to earn up to 17 AMA PRA
Category 1 Credit(s)™ at lectures presented by faculty of Harvard Medical School and University of
Miami Miller School of Medicine. You will also have time to network with other clinicians at an
educational activity specifically tailored to the needs of primary care providers like you.

Our goal in developing quality CME courses is always to inspire, empower, and inform. We invite
you to take an active part in the future of health care by attending this premier CME course,
Current Clinical Issues in Primary Care.

We look forward to seeing you this February in Fort Lauderdale.

Keynote Speakers
Friday, February 11, 2011
The Promise of Primary Care
John D. Goodson, MD, FACP
Dr Goodson, Deputy Director of the Harvard Medical School Course Development Committee,
has been a primary care practitioner for 35 years in the Internal Medicine Associates, a primary care
internal medicine practice based at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). In his early career
as a medical educator, Dr Goodson expanded the primary care training program at the MGH.
He continues to teach in his practice and on the ward in patient service. He has organized and
taught primary care continuing education for 30 years. Nationally, he has been involved in heath
care advocacy for the Society of General Internal Medicine (SGIM) and the American College of
Physicians (ACP). He maintains his own private practice, seeing 60-70 patients per week, and
admits and rounds on his own in patients.
About the Presentation:
Dr Goodson will briefly summarize the current challenges facing primary care practice and then
discuss the many current opportunities to rebuild the primary care workforce. There are aspects of
the 2011 health care legislation that are quite favorable and there is a growing public support for our
work but improvement is by no means assured. Dr Goodson will present examples of how primary
care has been maintained and restored and will go on to assert that in the end, we need to marshal
the support of every primary care provider and all engage in a national effort to expand primary care.

Mending a Broken Heart—Cardiology in the 21st Century
William O’Neill, MD
At the time of President Dwight Eisenhower’s heart attack in 1955, America was just starting on an
epidemic of coronary artery disease (CAD). Over the last 50 years the conquest of CAD has become
one of the major accomplishments of modern medicine. 50 years ago, male life expectancy was
62 years, now it is 73 years. Survival after onset of symptoms was 8 years, now it is over 20 years!
Mortality for myocardial infarction was 20%, now it is less than 5%! Numerous scientific advances
share credit for the conquest of CAD: Smoking cessation, control of hypertension and cholesterol,
coronary bypass and angioplasty therapy of acute MI have all contributed to the dramatic decrease in
age-adjusted mortality.
However, we cannot rest on our laurels; the mission is far from accomplished! Smoking incidence is up
in young people and sedentary life styles and obesity may bring a new wave of coronary patients. For
these reasons refinements in care and research advancements are still essential.
About the Presentation:
Dr O’Neill, international leader in interventional cardiology and the research of new diagnostic and
treatment techniques for obstructed heart arteries, will present promising new tools, like hybrid robotic
approaches to CAD, advances in biodegradable stents, exciting new advances in stem cells, therapies
for valvular heart disease, and non-surgical advances in aortic stenosis, mitral regurgitation, and aortic
aneurysms, as well as community wide initiatives to improve and regionalize MI care
An author of more than 300 articles, William W. O’Neill, MD is executive dean for clinical affairs,
professor of medicine, and associate chair of the Department of Internal Medicine for Research at the
University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. He is chief medical office for the University of Miami
Health System. His innovations include the mechanical rotary atherectomy technique, and his areas
of specialization include interventional cardiology, coronary artery diseases, and catheter treatment of
valvular heart disease.
