ROLES OF THE NORTHERNGODDESS —

 —
While much work has been done on goddesses of the ancient worldand the male gods of pre-Christian Scandinavia, the northern goddesseshave been largely neglected.
 Roles of the Northern Goddess
presentsa highly readable study of the worship of these goddesses by both menand women. Drawing on evidence from early literature, popular tradition, legend and archaeology, this book investigates the many roles of thenorthern goddess. The early hunting-goddess was a powerful figureworshipped by men across northern Europe and Asia. Local goddesseswere worshipped in relation to all aspects of the shared work of thehousehold and farm. Moreover, there were links between the goddessand sovereignty, and thus with northern rulers. The goddess emergesfrom these writings as both benevolent and destructive, a powerful liminalfigure closely concerned with birth and death and with the destiny of individuals.Illustrated with photographs and detailed figures,
 Roles of the Northern Goddess
will be an invaluable guide for all those studyingreligion, mythology and anthropology.
