The Operation Mulch-A-Lot Program, started in 2008, prevents this valuable material from being discarded and reuses it locally. In 2009-2010, Operation Mulch-A-Lot placed 6,000 tons of mulch on vacant City lots and in parks. While Operation Mulch-A-Lot is a successful, innovative program, it leaves a significant amount of mulch unused. This week, the City of Long Beach is kicking off the Mulch Home Delivery Program. This Program will extend the benefits of mulch to residents throughout the City by providing free mulch and mulch delivery to Long Beach residents, The Office of Sustainability will begin taking mulch delivery requests on Friday December 3, 2010. In order to be eligible to receive mulch through this program, one must be a Long Beach resident and homeowner, Long Beach residents may request mulch by completing and returning a simple form available at www.sustainablelb.com (Form Attached). Mulch from City tree trimming operations offers a number of landscaping advantages including weed prevention, added nutrients, soll temperature moderation, water retention, improved soil structure, beautification, and improved root systems. In conjunction with landscaping advantages, the reuse of this material offers the added environmental benefit of keeping these thousands of tons of mulch cut of the waste stream. This program is funded by a Workforce Development grant and provides green job training to youth workers involved in the Low Impact Development Academy. The Office of Sustainability encourages the Council to share information regarding this program with constituents and to encourage participation in this opportunity.
