T
he economic challenges facing our country confront local Jewish CommunityCenters throughout the continent, as well as JCC Association itself. The Jewishphilanthropic world has been damaged by the general reduction in wealth due tothe decline in the equity and housing markets as well as the impact of well-publicizednancial frauds. At the same time that Federation campaigns are reported to be down, more of our fellow citizens need assistance from our communal institutions.Ironically, it is just at such times that we must insure that every family looking to itsJCC for service will nd a welcoming and embracing environment. Reports tell us thatmembers are looking toward their Jewish communal home for exercise and learningexperiences because they enjoy the cost effectiveness and camaraderie they nd at theJCC. They are looking for the comfort of community during these tough times. So whilewe are strapped for cash, we all must deliver more.At JCC Association, we have reduced our operating costs, but we have made certainthat the services we provide to our constituent JCCs and camps remain as strong asever. That means that we continue to supply and support curriculum in areas from earlychildhood education to camping, that we are developing innovative initiatives for adults, that our consulting services in wellness, management, and Judaic education remain theenvy of others, and that our Jewish personnel in the armed services are cared for by ourchaplains. We have done so while maintaining our traditional dues structure, and we aregrateful for the support of our members.Local JCCs and camps are doing their best to provide more with less. We will remaindedicated to adding value to Jewish life. We are not out of the woods yet; difcult times, and perhaps hard choices, lie ahead. As we all move forward, let us resolve to makethose choices based on the Jewish values that are central to the Jewish people’s abilityto adapt, and not only survive, but prosper, through the centuries.
