An established nancial instuon in Spain, Grupo Banco Popularhas a presence across the enre country as well as Portugal andFrance. Since its foundaon in 1926 it has grown to becomeSpain’s largest banking group, with nearly 2,400 retail branches. It has earned a Europe-wide reputaon for the service it oers toboth personal and business clients.
The number and spread of Banco Popular’s branch locaonsmeans that IT is central to the Group’s service eciency. Everybranch has secure access to a suite of highly customized clientapplicaons over a wide area network (WAN). Although manybranches use a dedicated server to access these applicaons, smaller branches rely on a desktop PC which is congured to actas a server. Whilst this creates a cost-eecve network that giveseach branch a high level of informaon and service provision, itcan be subject to network delays. As increasing levels of acvity began to impact customerresponsiveness, the bank iniated a major review of its systemsand server management tools. It idened Microso SystemManagement Server 2003 (SMS 2003) as the opmum plaorm;but the standard implementaon assumes a server at eachbranch, dierent to Banco Popular’s infrastructure.
The team at Microso had ancipated the bank’s concernsand immediately began to review alternave opons andconguraons. With the focus on opmizing Banco Popular’sexisng IT infrastructure, the obvious choice for a systemsmanagement provider was Microso Partner 1E, whose experseand soluons directly address such challenges. Aer listeningcarefully to the Group’s parcular requirements, 1E’s consultantsrecommended the implementaon of Nomad Enterprise, aexible, high-performance applicaon designed specically toenable soware distribuon to remote branch oces which lackserver support.
