Case Study - Systems Management Services
Brish Sugar wanted to update an old operang system – an ideal opportunity to upgrade its IT infrastructure. But it needed to do so at an extremely busy me. 1E helped the food giant to get the reliable, standardized and adaptableenterprise-wide infrastructure it needed, without causing any disrupon to end users or business processes.
More than half of the sugar used and eaten in Britain comes fromBrish Sugar, including around four million packs a week soldunder retail brand Silver Spoon. Around its UK locaons, BrishSugar employs over 1,000 full-me sta, rising to over 1,500during the peak producon season known as “the campaign”.
Brish Sugar had been using IBM OS/2 as its network operangsystem since the ninees, and the operang system was
looking dated. In 2003 IBM ceased ocially supporng OS/2,signalling the me to move to a more modern operang system:Windows 2003.It was an ideal opportunity to overhaul the company’s ITinfrastructure, with the aim of introducing greater performance, resilience and reliability. Addionally, it was an opportunity tocreate standardizaon across the enterprise, cung the overallcost of systems management. As if the job was not challenging enough, budget constraintsdictated that the project must be completed before the nancialyear ended. That meant carrying out the work during the annualsugar processing season (“the campaign”), and at the sameme as another complex IT project (the migraon of an exisngmainframe-based Enterprise Resource Planning system toPeopleSo One World). With two system revamps going on during “the campaign”, it wasvital that business operaons and producon processes were notdisrupted. That meant the new operang system would have towork in smooth parallel with the exisng IBM OS/2 environmentthroughout the migraon.
The design and planning phase began in August 2003. 1E reviewedBrish Sugar’s current IT environment in order to design a newWindows 2003 and Acve Directory based infrastructure thatwould adapt with ease to the future needs of the business.
Brish Sugar required a new operang system, which ledto a completely new IT infrastructure oering:•
• Improved performance• Increased resilience and reliability• Standardized network• Proacve systems management• Reduced systems management costs• No disrupon to business operaons, produconprocesses, or the in-progress PeopleSo migraonproject
Brish Sugar chose Windows 2003 and MicrosoAcve Directory to replace IBM OS/2, selecng 1Especically for:• Technology and migraon experse• Infrastructure design• Implementaon experse• Development and implementaon skills• Design exibility• Skills transfer to internal sta • On-me and on-budget project delivery
• New infrastructure network• Migraon to Windows 2003• Design and implementaon of Acve Directoryplaorm• Increased service level to the business• Reduced total cost of ownership
