The UK government’s Department for Children, Schools andFamilies found that many of its PCs were being le on at somepoint overnight or at the weekend, unnecessarily adding to theDepartment’s electricity costs. Although a shut down policywas in place, the percepon that machines went into automacstandby mode meant sta were sll leaving machines on.Signicant power, parcularly over weekends, was thereforesll being used by machines le on standby.

Research by the Naonal Energy Foundaon (NEF) found thataround one-sixth of UK business PCs are not switched o overnight or at weekends. The resulng wastage equates toapproximately £115m of electricity per year.
emissions produced by the generaon of thiselectricity is equivalent to that produced by 200,000 smallfamily cars, 120,000 4x4 vehicles or a typical gas-red powerstaon.
