Case Study - NightWatchman
The Department for Children, Schools and Families found that many of its PCs were being le on unnecessarily overnight and at weekends. As part of the target for all government oces to be carbon neutral by 2012, the Department iscommied to reducing its carbon footprint and seng an example to others to advocate emission savings.
Customer prole
The UK government’s Department for Children, Schools andFamilies found that many of its PCs were being le on at somepoint overnight or at the weekend, unnecessarily adding to theDepartment’s electricity costs. Although a shut down policywas in place, the percepon that machines went into automacstandby mode meant sta were sll leaving machines on.Signicant power, parcularly over weekends, was thereforesll being used by machines le on standby.
The naonal background
Research by the Naonal Energy Foundaon (NEF) found thataround one-sixth of UK business PCs are not switched o overnight or at weekends. The resulng wastage equates toapproximately £115m of electricity per year.
The CO

emissions produced by the generaon of thiselectricity is equivalent to that produced by 200,000 smallfamily cars, 120,000 4x4 vehicles or a typical gas-red powerstaon.
The soluon
The Department for Children, Schools and Families, inconjuncon with 1E, looked at a simple, cost-eecve andimmediate soluon to cut carbon emissions resulng from PCsbeing le on overnight and at the weekend. The 1E soware soluon, NightWatchman®, oers a straightforward way of reducing unnecessary wastage by enabling theautomac, centralized power management of PCs across theICT infrastructure. It also ensures that any work is savedbefore powering down PCs, closing applicaons safely andsecurely during patching. This soluon is currently beingused globally across two million PCs in both private and publicsector organizaons.
