Case Study - Nomad Enterprise

Global Zero Touch Operating System Deployment

Nomad from 1E Enables Global Windows Desktop RollOut at HSBC
HSBC is the worlds local bank. Its commitment to sustainability means contributing to a stable economy while managing the social and environmental impacts of its global business. Headquartered in London, HSBC is one of the largest banking and financial services organisations in the world. HSBCs international network comprises around 8,000 offices in 88 countries and territories in Europe, the Asia-Pacific region, the Americas, the Middle East and Africa.

One reason for fewer branch servers: Nomad from 1E

Migrating to a new Operating System (O/S) presents one of the biggest challenges for IT departments. Deployment across large, distributed organizations can be a long, complex process and an expensive task. With the frequency and size of O/S and software updates increasing and with IT budgets constrained, the challenge becomes even more apparent. Acutely aware of the potential pitfalls of this challenge, the IT department at HSBC knew that they needed a solution to facilitate the rollout and running of their Common Windows Desktop (CWD) to every device inside HSBC. Nomad from 1E is used to extend the capabilities of our strategic desktop management solution. It now handles around 99% of all of our software deployments and patch updates to our fleet of desktop and laptop machines. We initially considered the solution as a way to speed up software deployment by reducing the number of times our desktops had to traverse our wide area networks; before finding Nomad the only alternative was to deploy a software distribution point in every site. , says Gary M Phillips, global head of IT operations, HSBC. We have been very pleased with the capability of Nomad, it handles our volumes and has made a visible contribution to the reduction of servers which has improved our total cost of ownership and aided us in our sustainability targets through removing branch servers. If you consider that, conservatively speaking, the UK alone would have required over 1,000 distribution point servers in order to complete our roll-out without impacting our network and then figure that HSBC has over 8,000 offices globally, thats a lot of servers, a lot of cost and a lot of CO2. We are now planning our Windows 7 CWD deployment and cannot contemplate doing this without using Nomad. concludes Gary M Phillips, global head of IT operations, HSBC.
