Customer prole
Located within the John Radclie hospital, Oxfordshire HealthInformacs Service (OHIS) is a ‘county-shared’ central IT resource.OHIS serves the informaon needs of Oxford Radclie Hospitals:the Nueld Orthopaedic Centre; Oxford Learning Disability Trust;and Oxfordshire & Buckinghamshire Mental Health PartnershipNHS Trust - with a total of over 10,000 PCs and printers, in avariety of hospitals, clinics and Trust oces.
The challenge
The range and diversity of locaons within the OHIS remit madethe management of IT assets extremely dicult. “The challengeof managing our desktop infrastructure was soaking up a largeproporon of our me and eort,” recalls Dominic Hamilton, ITProject Manager with OHIS. “Our ability to run a PC audit waslimited, so the informaon we did have was oen inadequate forthe decisions that had to be made. This was leading to ‘best guess’purchases and lengthy deployments, which didn’t always meet theneed that existed.”When technical support for the exisng operang plaormexpired, Hamilton drew up a requirements document for OHIS andbegan to research the opons which would best address its mostpressing IT system needs. Top of the list was Microso SMS 2003,and soon aer research began, Hamilton came across 1E.
The soluon
An inial chat with 1E Professional Services, the consulngorganizaon within 1E, conrmed Hamilton’s view that SMS 2003could provide a soluon to the immediate problem. To developa stronger business case, the 1E team carried out a detailedrequirements gathering session, to which senior execuves withinOHIS were invited. This was used to generate a compelling case forthe introducon of a new operang plaorm, which demonstratedclear benets that immediately gained high level commitment.Amongst these was the implementaon of a specic 1E tool,Nomad Branch (a component within Nomad Enterprise®), whicheciently distributes and deploys soware and patches to remotebranch oces that lack server support, and was a natural t withthe topology of the Oxfordshire NHS.
