Hardware Requirements
The minimum specifications for the computer that the iNEWS Console software will be installed on are as
follows:
CPU 1.0 GHz Pentium III
Memory 256MB RAM
Hard Drive 10GB or larger
Network Card Windows Compatible 10/100 Ethernet
Operating System Windows XP Professional, Service Pack 2
Keyboard Standard Windows Keyboard
Mouse Microsoft Compatible Mouse
Monitor 15” SVGA Monitor
USB One USB 1.1 or 2.0 available slot
USB-to-Serial SIIG USG to 4-port Serial (P/N: JU-HS4011)
Modem USA: Provided by iNEWS with purchase of Console Kit
Int’l: Hayes Compatible external modem
The SIIG USB to 4-port serial adapter (SIIG part number JU-HS4011) has been qualified for this
application.

Installing on Windows
This section provides information on installing the iNEWS Console software on a computer running
Microsoft® Windows XP Professional™ and uses a Serial-to-USB device.

Setup COM Ports


Any existing COM ports currently configured on the PC should be reassigned prior to installing additional
USB-to-Serial COM Ports.
Reassign any existing COM ports configured on the PC
NOTE: If the existing COM ports are already assigned to a COM port range above those needed by the new
USB-to-Serial COM ports, these steps may be skipped. An example would be an existing COM ports
already assigned to COM5.
1. Access the Windows Device Manager by first right clicking on My Computer either via the My
Computer icon on the desktop or via Start->My Computer and selecting Manage.
2. Select Device Manager on the Microsoft Management Console.
3. Expand the tree to access the Ports (COM & LPT).
4. Right click on the existing Communications Port (COM1) or (COM2).
Install USB-to-Serial COM Ports
1. Access the Windows Device Manager by first right clicking on My Computer either via the My
Computer icon on the desktop or via Start->My Computer and selecting Manage.

Make sure that the new USB-to-Serial COM ports are assigned to COM1-4.

Install Console Software

Manual Installation
1. Create a directory for the Console files – C:\Program Files\Avid\Console\
2. Copy all Console files to the new directory from the iNEWS CD
3. Using Windows Explorer, open the C:\Program Files\Avid\Console\dct folder. Select all the files,
right-click, and select Properties. Clear the read-only attribute.
4. Delete keyboard.dct
5. Copy ibmx.kbd and rename the copied file to keyboard.dct
6. Delete videomap.dct
7. Copy color.vid and rename the copied file to videomap.dct
8. Open a Command Prompt- Start->Run> cmd
9. Run the following commands:
a. cd C:\Progra~1\Avid\Console\dct\
b. makemux ..\ -i
c. exit
10. Using Windows Explorer, right-click C:\Program Files\Avid\Console\console.exe and select Properties

a. On the Compatibility tab, select the check box for “Run this program…” and select
Windows 95

b. On the Misc tab, set Idle sensitivity to High

d. On the Program tab, set Working path to “C:\Program Files\Avid\Console”

e. Select OK which creates a shortcut to console.exe


11. Copy the console shortcut to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
to permit the console application to start automatically after the computer starts.

Edit Configuration File


Edit the console configuration file to ensure that the proper settings are entered for your configuration.
Edit the console configuration file
1. Using Microsoft WordPad, open the console configuration file. The default location is c:\Program
Files\Avid\Console\console.cfg.
2. Set the IO addresses for the four computers (or modem) are set for 3f8, 2f8, 3e8, and 2e8
respectively. Be sure to use the “hostess” keyword and not the “portaddress” keyword.
3. Set the IRQ’s for the four computers (or modem) to 4, 3, 4, and 3 respectively.
4. Set the speed for the four computers (or modem) to 9600.
5. Save the file.

Known Limitations
This section provides information on known limitations that were not addressed in this release. Any
available workaround procedures are also documented, when possible.

Note: For limitations related to compatibility of this release with previous versions/other products,
see the section of this document entitled, Compatibility Issues.

Tested Operating Systems


This version has only been tested with Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2.
