No. 6 title comes a year later than expected

DELPHOS — For the sixth time in 14 seasons, the St.
John’s football team ended its season with a state title.
The Jays had won their fifth title in 2008 and were
within five seconds of a back-to-back in 2009 when they
dropped a heart-breaking 24-21 loss to Norwalk St. Paul
at Massillon’s Paul Brown Tiger Stadium.
That gave them plenty of motivation in the off-season
and pre-season to redeem themselves and finish the job.
That the Blue Jays did in spades.
Not only did they get their sixth state title in the
Division VI ranks — the fourth for 12th-year head man
Todd Schulte — they won their seventh Associated Press
poll title (fourth under Schulte) and their second con-
secutive undisputed Midwest Athletic Conference crown
(Schulte’s 4th).
They also captured the program’s seventh undefeated
regular campaign.
The road began during the heat of August and ended
in the chill of autumn at Canton.
REGULAR SEASON
WEEK 1
ST. JOHN’S 34, LIMA CENTRAL CATHOLIC

St. John’s and Lima Central Catholic have built up
quite an archrivalry in boys basketball.
The football teams are getting there.
In the 2010 opener at refurbished Stadium Park, the
host Blue Jays took advantage of four Thunderbird turn-
overs and held a ground-hugging attack to 100 rushing
yards to bounce the T-Birds by 20.
The Jays built up a 27-0 lead — keyed by a 14-0 spurt
in less than a minute in the first half — before LCC got
on the board.
Senior tailback Evan Burgei ran 11 times for 94 yards
and junior fullback Jordan Bergfeld six times for 85
yards. Tailback-turned-quarterback Jordan Leininger
(senior) added 68 yards rushing and 34 passing.
LCC was the first of six teams on the Jays’ schedule
that eventually made the playoffs and lost in the Division
V state semifinals.
WEEK 2
ST. JOHN’S 35, JEROMESVILLE HILLSDALE

On the road, the Jays played an eventual playoff team
(Division V regional finalist) and battled to a draw for
the first 22 minutes.
A 14-point splurge in the final two minutes of the first
half — two long touchdown passes from Leininger to
classmate AJ Klausing, including a 50-yard Hail Mary
to end the half — propelled the Blue and Gold to the
28-point triumph.
The Blue Jays again won the line of scrimmage, out-
rushing the Falcons 203-77 behind Burgei’s 89 yards (13
rushes) and Leininger’s 86 (11 totes).
The Jays came within six minutes of a shutout before
the Falcons broke the drought.
WEEK 3
ST. JOHN’S 35, MINSTER 7
The Jays began defense of their outright Midwest
Athletic Conference title from 2009 by scoring early and
then taking advantage of a turnover-prone Wildcat team
— 5 miscues — to grab a 28-point victory at Memorial
Field in Minster.
Leininger accounted for 219 yards of total offense
(144 rushing) and Burgei added 115 yards on the ground
(13 carries) in a 326-yard total offense effort. The defense
held the hosts off the board until the final period.
The Wildcats made it all the way to the Region 24
finals before falling to Sidney Lehman.
WEEK 4
ST. JOHN’S 37, ANNA 13
In an early-season MAC showdown at Stadium Park,
St. John’s unleashed its powerful running game behind
a dominant offensive line — seniors Austin Vogt, Joey
Grubenhoff, Alex Recker, Derek Klaus and Seth Knebel
— and controlled the ball in shooting down the Rockets,
a playoff team in Division V.
The Blue and Gold scored 37 straight points before
the Rockets got on the board.
The defense allowed two late scores but ended a
2-game losing streak to the Rockets (2006 and 2007).
WEEK 5
ST. JOHN’S 31, ST. HENRY 7
St. John’s used the big play: a 66-yard run by Burgei,
a 54-yarder by Leininger, a 40-yard interception return
by junior cornerback Ryan Densel and an 87-yard kick-
off return by senior Tyler Bergfeld; to overwhelm St.
Henry at Wally Post Field.

On Homecoming night at Stadium Park as the Jays
crowned senior Alicia Ankerman as queen, the Blue Jays
gave her a 36-point MAC victory.
The Jays held the spread-offense Tigers to 147 total
yards and came within 4:10 of a shutout before surround-
ing a score.
The offense toted up 201 yards on the ground as
Burgei ran for 72 yards (11 tries), Leininger 70 (8 runs)
and Jordan Bergfeld 51 (8 rushes).
WEEK 7
ST. JOHN’S 14, COLDWATER 0
St. John’s and Coldwater locked up in a tooth-and-nail
MAC battle at Stadium Park.
Leininger was injured early by being poked in the eye
but returned later.
The two high-powered offenses combined for 433
yards but the Blue and Gold running game amassed 197
yards as Bergfeld ran for 94 yards (7 carries) and Burgei
63 (18 carries).
Burgei’s 6-yard run in the second period put the
Jays up and Bergfeld’s 80-yarder up the gut broke the
Cavaliers’ back.
The Jays registered their first shutout of 2010 but the
Cavaliers ended up in the Division V state finals, losing
to repeat champion Youngstown Ursuline.
The hosts unleashed their 3-man defensive front:
seniors Recker and Klaus (ends) and nose tackle Cody
Brinkman; that they would use to great effect as the sea-
son wore on and the playoffs began.
WEEK 8
ST. JOHN’S 49, FORT RECOVERY 0
The Jays might have had trouble getting ready for a
struggling Indian squad in the “sandwich” game — com-
ing off a tough win over Coldwater and with a date the
next week at archrival Marion Local — but put those
concerns to rest early with a 28-point first quarter.
They never looked back in registering their second
straight shutout.
Burgei toted up 127 yards rushing (13 carries) and four
scores, while Leininger amassed 129 yards of offense (91
passing) and Bergfeld 56 yards on six rushes.
The defense held the new-look Tribe to 159 yards of
total offense.
WEEK 9
ST. JOHN’S 17, MARION LOCAL 13
The Jays trailed for the first (and only) time all season,
13-10, late in the fourth period. They needed to drive 80
yards in the last 4:44 to keep their perfect season going.
With Leininger taking charge, they did so, getting a
27-yard TD toss from Leininger to Tyler Bergfeld with
1:03 left to take the lead.
The defense still had to hold on, stopping the Flyers
on four straight tries inside the 20, to preserve the vic-
tory.
The Jays ran for 187 yards against a tough Flyer ‘D’
and held the home team to 181 yards of offense as they
secured their second straight outright MAC crown.

The Jays could have been ripe for a letdown after
securing the MAC title with a hard-hitting victory over
Marion Local as they hosted a struggling Cardinals team
at Stadium Park.
After one series, that was it.
They exploded for a then-program-record 36 points in
the second period to take control and gave 21 seniors a
victory in their final regular-season game in front of the
home folks.
They also finished their second consecutive perfect
regular season, the seventh overall, and headed into the
playoffs with another Associated Press poll title, the
program’s seventh.

AT STADIUM PARK
ST. JOHN’S 73, EDGERTON 21
Hosting eighth-seeded Edgerton in the opening round,
things didn’t start off well for the Jays as the Bulldogs
recovered an onside kick to start the game.
It all went downhill from there for the Bulldogs as the
Blue Jay defense made a 4th-down stop on the very first
set of downs and then the Jays exploded for a record 38
points in the second period en route to a 52-point rout.
The Jays ran for 366 yards on 36 tries, topped by
Burgei’s 138 yards (13 rushes) as even the freshmen got
in on the scoring act as Tyler Jettinghoff exploded for a
late 72-yard TD run.
The Jays scored the first 59 points and the starters
were long gone before the Bulldogs put up 21 points in
the final stanza.
REGION 22 SEMIFINAL
AT DONNELL STADIUM
ST. JOHN’S 42, ADA 14
For the third year in a row, the Jays and Bulldogs met
up in the playoffs, the previous two times in the regional
finals.
This time it was in the regional semifinals.
For the third time, the Jays ousted the Bulldogs and
ended their season.
The Jays used a 20-point second period to seize con-
trol and rolled up 340 yards on the ground.
Though Ada had 84 plays to only 36 for themselves,
the Jays used the big play as Burgei ran for late scores
of 81 and 75 in amassing 174 yards on 10 rushes, while
Bergfeld added 88 yards on five tries and three TDs and
Leininger 80 (10 carries) and added 75 yards passing.
The defense bent but did not give up the big plays to
the high-powered Bulldog attack that came in averaging
51.1 points and 527.8 yards a game. The Jays held them

Chris Pohlman, with two returned for scores — as the
Jays earned their third straight state semifinal with a
36-point rout.
The Jays offensive line, with senior Vinny Wiley sub-
bing for an injured Grubenhoff, once more dominated up
front as they amassed 327 yards on the ground as Burgei
had 181 yards (27 totes) and three scores (all in the sec-
ond period) and Leininger 113 (14 rushes) and added 144
yards via the air.
The Blue Jay defense — headed by the defensive
line, the linebacking crew led by Pohlman and fellow
senior Dylan Dancer and secondary front-lined by Tyler
Burgei, Densel and senior safety Tyler Ditto — stymied
the previously-unbeaten Panthers to one yard rushing
and 270 passing.

AT HARMON FIELD
ST. JOHN’S 49, SIDNEY LEHMAN 7
After four straight spread-offense teams, the Jays
finally faced a ground-hugging offense in the Cavaliers.
It didn’t matter.
They dominated up front, outrushing the Cavaliers
255-103, and scored the first 49 points before surrender-
ing a score late in the final period.
The backfield trio of Burgei (9 rushes, 77 yards, 2
TDs), Jordan Bergfeld (8 for 76) and Leininger (8 for 73,
2 scores; adding 93 yards passing) operated behind Vogt,
Recker, Klaus, Knebel and junior left guard Alex Wehri
on their way to their third straight state final.
The defense held Lehman to 161 yards of total offense
and again returned two interceptions for scores: one by
Dancer and the other by Ditto.
The win gave the Jays a third straight shot at the state
title.

STATE FINAL
AT CANTON’S FAWCETT STADIUM
ST. JOHN’S 77, SHADYSIDE 6
St. John’s, still smarting from 2009’s last-seconds
loss in the finals, put those demons to rest with a totally
dominating performance.
The offense played a near perfect game: one punt and
one turnover; in amassing 552 yards of offense in routing
the Tigers for the team’s sixth state title in the Division
VI ranks.
The yardage consisted of a Division VI-record 416
rushing — Burgei rushed for 123 yards on 17 totes,
Leininger 101 on 13 rushes and Bergfeld 89 (8 carries).
Leininger also threw for 136 yards and had three touch-
downs: two passing.
The defense limited the Tigers — a run-oriented
offense — to 61 yards rushing (38 attempts) and 184
yards total.
The Jays got their backups plenty of playing time and
even they put on a show as the Blue and Gold coasted
to the 71-point win. Grubenhoff and Wiley also returned
from injury for their final games.
They set an all-division state mark in most points
scored in any playoff game and the largest margin of
victory. Burgei set a small-school state-finals mark of
four TDs scored.
