ria, la marina di Varazze recupera gli spazi una
volta adibiti a discarica di punta Aspera, andan-
do ad rirsi nella parte occidentale della città,
laddove la diga foranea continua con un arco
l’andamento della costa rocciosa e vi si radica
attraverso un giardino botanico mediterraneo.
Tre ordini di pontili ospitano circa 800 imbar-
cazioni, ma nell’architettura nessuna giacitura
scomposta, nessun segno forte, solo un len-
to – temporalmente e fisicamente – adagiarsi
al terreno, all’acqua, alle linee del paesaggio.

Nella sistemazione di questo tratto di litorale,
occorreva un nuovo atto fondativo, quello che
per i romani era stato la creazione dell’Aurelia.
Bisognava combinare le esigenze dell’attività
cantieristica con lo sviluppo di un nuovo ap-
prodo turistico per imbarcazioni e la realizza-
zione di un lungo fronte urbano a destinazione
residenziale-commerciale. Serviva reinventa-
re una linea sottile tra terra e cielo, una passeg-
giata, che dai giardini portasse alla nascente
struttura per le ricerche marine avanzate. Così
dal nulla, ecco emergere una sorta di palafitta,
novella strada di mezzacosta, che si piega alla
morfologia del territorio, materializzando le
ombre profonde del portico. Progetto comun-
que non mimetico, dove ogni materiale ha un
proprio carattere, una propria individualità,
una propria identità che si smorza però nel col-
loquio cordiale con l’esistente. Di qui il ricorso
al legno perché materiale presente nei cantieri
navali ma anche negli stabilimenti balneari di
inizio secolo, o l’uso di una copertura che ha il
colore degli abissi sferzati dal vento di libeccio:

had to be reinvented between land and sky, a

mentre osservato dal basso, si ha la sensazione
che l’edificio sia leggero e si alzi verso il cielo.
Gli stessi corpi compatti delle costruzioni ri-
propongono nelle fasce di blocchi in cemento
vibrocompresso splittato, sorta di pietra arti-
ficiale locale, non solo le cromie delle rocce o
degli edifici storici e delle ville d’epoca che ca-
ratterizzano con la loro presenza l’entroterra di
Varazze, ma anche i “bersaglieri”, la Campanu-
la isophylla dai fiori bianchi e lillà, le fucsie, le
sassifraghe, il giglio rosso, tutti quei fiori tanto
cari a Libereso Guglielmi, il mitico giardiniere
di Mario Calvino che il figlio Italo ha mirabil-
mente tratteggiato nel racconto Un pomerig-
gio, Adamo2. Pazienza, tenacia quindi, amore
per il luogo dispiegate lungo i ventidue anni
che hanno accompagnato la lunga gestazione
del progetto. Un crinale quello delle stagioni,
irto di ostacoli, gravoso da superare, forse an-
che più del La strada di San Giovanni: facile
infatti cedere alle lusinghe del tempo che tutto
smorza e appiattisce, facile piegarsi alle tante
richieste che si saranno affastellate in quasi un

to the newly-founded facility for advanced
marine research. So, out of nothing, here we
have a kind of pile-dwelling, a new half-coastal
street that folds into the structure of the land,
shaping the deep shadows of the portico.
This project is not about camouflaging. Every
material has its own character, its own individ-
uality, its own identity, though one softened in
a cordial dialogue with what was already there.
This is the logic behind the use of wood as a
material found in shipbuilding, as well as in the
turn-of-the-century bathing establishments;
likewise, there is the use of a roof the color of
the sea whipped by the southwesterly winds.
This makes the port seen from the hills above
seem to melt into the gulf water. Seen from be-
low, it gives the impression that the building is
lightweight, rising towards the sky.
The buildings’ compact structures echo in
their bands of split vibration-compressed ce-
ment a kind of local artificial stone, the hues of
the rocks and the historic buildings and villas
whose presence defines Varazze’s inland area.
Likewise, they reflect the Italian bellflowers,
Campanula isophylla, white and lilac flowers,
fuchsia, saxifrage, red lilies, all the flowers
so well-loved by Libereso Guglielmi, Mario
Calvino’s legendary gardener, whom his son
Italo so well deftly depicted in the short story
“Adam, One Afternoon”2. Patience, tenacity
and a love of the place, stretched over twenty-
two years of the project’s long gestation period.
The seasons were like steep cliff, thick with
obstacles, difficult to overcome, maybe even
more than Calvino’s The Road to San Giovanni.
It’s easy to give in to the lull of time that softens
and flattens everything. It is easy to bend in the
face of the many demands that must have been
piled up in nearly a quarter century, easy to
lose the freshness of the first sketches. Yet here,
the felicitous general layout has survived, in-
tact, unchanged, careful to make sure that the
shout of businesses located here do not drown
out the conversation with history and tradi-
tions. It is more than a pleasant island in the
Ligurian landscape. It is more than just another
resource for Varazze. It is an act undertaken
together, a point of meeting between, land, sea
and people. While in a not distant past fisher-
men and small landowners struggled alone
against the sea and drought, now tourism ports
drive hopes of employment and land planning,
courageously re-envisioning the landscape
afresh. “Yes, the pile-dwellings! We must make
the pile-dwellings!”3
