Conference Kick Off Hangzhou, Monday 8 November 2010
The Conference didn’t actually open until the next day, Sunday. I got up early andwalked around the grounds of the Zhejiang Xizi Hotel. It was here in 2002,accompanying Kofi on a visit, that I fell in love with West Lake and Hangzhou. Maoloved it too; he came to this hotel 27 times.Guests are put up inVillas likethis.The lake wrapsaround thegrounds. Themodern citycenter is theskyline in thedistance.
The Leifeng Pagoda is right next door.
It’s very peaceful. I took a seat to enjoy the early morning quiet.The Life and Development Conference seems more a public relations exercise than ascholarly exchange. The topic is obviously too broad. It is co-sponsored by myuniversity, Zhejiang, and the City Government of Hangzhou. Oddly, I was asked tospeak third at the opening plenary session, after the Mayor of Hangzhou and thePresident of the University. I still can’t figure it out.
