1 Corinthians - Chapter 11:17-34 (Week 13)  Leader Guide
Vs. 17  Paul is about to issue a straight forward rebuke for poor execution of a core church practice.Vs. 18- The ideas of Come together (Gr. We get the word synergize) and the church (Gr. Ekklesia,meaning assembly) contrast with the word divisions (Gk. Schisma) in some formPaul believes it because of the other issues talked about in the first 10 chapters, but contrasting to vs. 1-16where he praises them.Vs. 19  heresies. This is a word that has come to mean more in the English than the initial intent. It simplymeans sect. It literally means to capture or storm and has the connotation of being a choice. A sect ina larger group setting would be a people whose beliefs lean in different directions than another group or thecore, but dont necessarily mean their beliefs are wrong. The Pharisees, Saducees were different sect(Gk. Heresis) within the Jewish religion. When it is used with a qualifier, (e.g. 2 Pet 2:1  damnableheresies, then you get a meaning more akin to what the word has come to be known.The heresies he is going to point out is one of disunity in the communion. (c.f. vs 21)Vs. 20-22 Paul is pointing out the heresies:1.
Getting drunk2.
Going ahead and eating on their own3.
Humiliating those that have none/little by basically eating in front of them, flaunting your statusVs 23-26  Koinania  fellowship (a.k.a. communion)Vs 27ff  Self examination:1.
Do it in an unworthy manner, you sin against Jesus blood and body2.
Examine yourself  is there sin, are you right with God, etc.3.
Recognize what you are doing  The bread and wine are not insignificant tokens but have deepspiritual significance, so much so that Paul warns them that they can actually eat/drink judgment onthemselvesA deeper look at the Last Supper which was The Passover Seder (Seder means order)1.
To be eaten in family groups.2.
Haggadah: special book containing the order of the ceremony3.
Seder Dish:a.
Roasted egg in shell: symbolize the sacrifice in the temple (Jesus would have had lamb at thelast supper)b.
Roasted Bone (zeroa) symbolized the paschal lambc.
Bitter herbs (Maror): symbolized the suffering in Egyptd.
Haroset: mixture of apple, nuts, wine and cinnamon represented the mortar used for thebricks
Karpas: parsely and salt water  crossing red sea (parsley) / tears (salt water)4.
Three matzot: unleaved bread one on top, one on bottom and a middle broken one all wrapped up.a.
Afikoman: half of the matzo that was broken which is hidden in the house. It is thenredeemed by the children and eaten by everyone at the end of the meal to symbolize thelast meal before the Exodus5.
Four cups of wine (Arba Kosot) drunk four times to symbolize the four terms of redemption in theBible (Ex. 6:6-7)a.
Kiddish: Sanctification (I will take you out of Egypt)b.
Deliverance( I will deliver you from Egyptian bondage)c.
Redemption (I will redeem you with my power)d.
Restoration (I will restore/acquire you as my people)6.
The cup of Elijah (question of whether there is a fifth cup of redemption led to this cup where Elijahwould come and answer it.)

Yachats: The middle matzah is broken and hidden. This is called the lechem oni, the Bread of afflicition (Deut 16:13, Isaiah 53) Jesus is the bread of life (John 6:35)6.
Maggid: The Haggadah is now reada.
The Four Questions God commanded in Exodus that the children were to ask (Ex. 12:26)i.
Why is this night different from all other nights?
On all other nights, we eat either unleavened or leavened bread, but tonight we eatonly unleavened bread?
On all other nights, we eat all kinds of vegetables, but tonight, we eat only bitter herbs?
On all other nights, we do not dip [our food] even once, but tonight we dip twice?
On all other nights, we eat either sitting or reclining, but tonight we only recline?
The 10 plagues, during this phase a drop of wine is dropped from the cup for each plague(blood, frogs, lice, flies, sickness, blisters, hail, locust, darkness, death of the first born.)c.
