Daimler tipped for success
D aimler AG is expecting a return on
sales of eight percent across the
entire business cycle. Compared to the
result posted last year, Daimler Trucks’
sales increased by 44 percent within
the third quarter of 2010
The positive trend in the commercial
vehicle sector, which last year had to
cope with an average sales decline of
50 percent; has now been confirmed in
the figures from Daimler Trucks for the
third quarter of 2010. Compared to the
result posted for the same quarter last
year, Daimler Trucks’ sales increased by
44 percent to 94,800 units.
New national road safety strategy
T he heads of transport and road
agencies around the country have
unveiled a new 10-year National Road
Safety Strategy intended to set an
ambitious long-term vision for road
safety improvement in Australia.
Every day, four people are killed and
80 are seriously injured on Australia’s
roads. On this account, Australian
Transport Ministers have asked the
heads of transport and road agencies
around the country to prepare a new
10-year National Road Safety Strategy
for the period from 2011 to 2020.
The new strategy is intended to set
an ambitious long-term vision for
road safety improvement in Australia
and to guide national action over the
coming decade. The draft ‘National
Road Safety Strategy 2011-2020’ has
now been unveiled. It contains a range
of initiatives and interventions in four
key areas - safe roads, safe speeds,
safe vehicles and safe people. The draft
strategy outlines broad directions for

truck markets to see further recovery
by the end of the year. It forecasts
market growth of five percent in

NAFTA region, 50 percent in Brazil, and
between 20 and 30 percent in Japan.

Australia’s roads.
“The social and economic impact of
this loss of lives and injury rate is
devastating,” he said. “Australia has a
strong track record in road safety, but
these statistics tell us that more needs
to be done. The NTC has long been an
advocate for a safe systems approach
to road safety and we’re encouraged by
the focus on this in the strategy.”
A safe systems approach would include
taking a holistic view of all the factors
which influence safety, Mr Dimopoulos
of analysts and investors in Wörth,
Germany, “The forecasts indicate that
the worldwide markets for medium-
duty and heavy-duty trucks will
grow by eight percent to 2.6 million
units in the period between 2010 and
2013. At Daimler Trucks it looks like
we will succeed in boosting sales by
more than 40 percent to over 500,000
units during the same period. Given
this outlook, a return on sales of
eight percent is within reach for
Daimler Trucks across the entire
business cycle.” ■

11 February 2011. Following this
consultation period, the draft strategy
will be reviewed and finalised for
consideration by the Australian
Transport Council (ATC). The Council
includes all Australian, state and
territory government ministers with
responsibility for transport. “It is only
by tackling road safety holistically and
at a national level that we will truly be
able to make a significant reduction to
death and serious injury on our roads,”

New Freightliner arrives in Aus

F reightliner has unveiled a new
model at Flemington racecourse,
Melbourne. The ‘Coronado’ is the
first in a series of new or updated
Freightliners arriving in Australia over
the forthcoming months.
In addition to showcasing a renewed
cab design, Freightliner revealed that
it would resume using Cummins
engines in addition to the in-house
Detroit Diesel range. The new Coronado
is available in two specifications:
the standard highway or a severe
duty version.
The Severe Duty models are fitted with
heavier duty axles, a bigger section
frame, heavier duty suspensions and
GSMs which go from 90 tonnes up
to 140 tonnes for road trains. ■

Truck Industry Council gets

behind Safety Drive Day

F reight 2011 announced that the

Truck Industry Council (TIC) has
thrown its full support behind the
Freight 2011 Safety Drive Day, coming
on board as an official supporter and
endorsing the event to its members.
The TIC, formed in 2001, is an
independent organisation representing
all current manufacturers and
importers of on-road trucks to the
Australian market. Its associate
membership includes diesel engine
suppliers and major component
suppliers. The TIC presents the
collective views of its member
companies to Governments at all levels,
political parties, other industry groups
and the general public.
The TIC has also confirmed it will hold
its quarterly board meeting during
the Safety Drive Day event and treat
delegates to a presentation on key
industry issues.
The Safety Drive Day will showcase
many of the new technologies and
innovations focussed on making our
vehicles safer, quieter, more productive
and far more fuel efficient.
Delegates will be given the opportunity
to get behind the wheel of some
of the most desired heavy vehicles
and passenger cars on the reputable
Sandown Racetrack as well as be
treated to an exhibition of working
indoor and outdoor displays along with
informative panel discussions, where
industry experts and key decision
makers will discuss the hot industry
topics.
This event will provide a unique
networking opportunity for attendees
with government officials, major
fleet key decision makers, OEM
manufacturers and premium industry
suppliers all in attendance.
The Freight 2011 Safety Drive Day will
be held on the 4th March at Sandown
Racecourse in Melbourne. ■

dealership in Warrnambool, Victoria.
The developing Victorian town of
Warrnambool has welcomed Barry

Transport costs on the rise

T he Victorian Transport Association
(VTA) has unveiled alarming data;
revealing that transport costs rose
by 3.89 percent in the past year.
“Our analysis shows that component
transport costs continue to increase,
some more than others,” says VTA CEO
Philip Lovel AM.
“Obviously, labour is a key increase
adding 2.43 percent to the Index. Rising
labour costs will continue to put pressure
on overall transport costs in the future,”
he said. “Interest rates and vehicle capital
costs also added another 0.75 percent,
while fuel cost increases added another
0.36 percent”.
In addition, increasing administration
outlay would reflect the added costs of
transport regulatory compliance and
other administrative functions. “We urge
all of our members, and the transport
industry generally, to seek full cost
recovery,” Mr Lovel said. “It is vital that
they act immediately.”
As heavy vehicle registration charges
continue to increase annually, margins
are quickly disappearing, while the diesel
fuel tax credit available to on-road
transport operators is decreasing. The
on-road diesel fuel tax credit was 18.51
cents per litre (cpl) in 2008, and dropped
back to 15.543 cpl in 2010 – a minus of
16 percent.
Mr. Lovel said, “customers must accept
cost increases being passed on, or they
will find more transport companies
disappearing or reducing services.
“The financial health of the transport
sector is at stake,” Mr. Lovel concluded. ■

Scania’s Young Australian Truck
Driver named
WA Freight Group driver Rick Lockwood
outperformed 11 other national finalists
to take out the Scania Young Australian
Truck Driver title.
26-year-old Rick was judged best in a
program testing on-road driving skills,
manoeuvring skills, knowledge of road
rules, driver attitude and ability to be an
industry role model.
The competitors, all under the age of 40,
were awarded for demonstrating superior
knowledge, good judgement in traffic and
fuel-efficient driving skills, with a focus
on calm and safe driving over speed.
Winner Rick Lockwood, who initially
began driving in 2000, scored 18,200
out of a possible 25,000 points and was
presented with $10,000, and a $4000
travel voucher. Rick said he may use
some of the prize money to visit his wife
Amy’s homeland, Ireland. “But first it is
to absorb what I have achieved. It’s quite
unbelievable.”

position to help educate young people

it will become mandatory for all MY11 new trucks,

the regular muffler in the vehicle’s exhaust system.
