C5.2 Chemical Changes
C5.2x Balancing Equations
C5.2 Chemical Changes
Chemical changes can occur when twosubstances, elements, or compoundsinteract and produce one or more differentsubstances whose physical and chemicalproperties are different from theinteracting substances. When substancesundergo chemical change, the number of atoms in the reactants is the same as thenumber of atoms in the products. This canbe shown through simple balancing of chemical equations. Mass is conservedwhen substances undergo chemicalchange. The total mass of the interactingsubstances (reactants) is the same as thetotal mass of the substances produced(products).
Balance simple chemical equations applying theconservation of matter.
Distinguish between chemical and physicalchanges in terms of theproperties of the reactants andproducts.
Draw pictures to distinguish the relationships
betweenatoms in physical and chemical changes.
