collaboration with the Pennsylvania Asthma Partnership to raiseawareness about asthma and improve asthma care throughout theworld; andWHEREAS, Each year GINA chooses a theme and organizespreparation and distribution of "World Asthma Day" materials andresources; andWHEREAS, "World Asthma Day" activities are organized in eachcountry by health care professionals, educators and members ofthe public who want to help reduce the burden of asthma; andWHEREAS, The first "World Asthma Day" in 1998 was celebratedin more than 35 countries in conjunction with the first worldasthma meeting held in Barcelona, Spain; andWHEREAS, Participation has increased with each "World AsthmaDay" held since then, and the day has become one of the world'smost important asthma awareness and education events; andWHEREAS, Many Americans are afflicted with asthma, a seriouschronic lung disease, caused by continual airway inflammationpunctuated by episodes or attacks of increased inflammationoften in response to specific triggers; andWHEREAS, These attacks, characterized by difficulty inbreathing, occasionally are extreme and constitute a medicalemergency; andWHEREAS, Over the past two decades, the burden of asthma inthe United States has greatly increased; andWHEREAS, More recent data about asthma-relatedhospitalizations and mortality appear to indicate that asthmaprevalence has stabilized and improved levels of diseasemanagement have helped to mitigate asthma's effects; andWHEREAS, The Pennsylvania Asthma Partnership is comprised ofdedicated professionals, consumers, pharmacies, environmental20100HR0795PN3695
