Just a few Saturdays ago,we aempted to go
for a jog, taking the labrador with for the run.
Tripping, jumping and breaking abruptly on
the road as the X5s zoomed past created an
experience which took us back to the image
of man somewhere in the harsh wilderness,
struggling for his survival - an image which

the other routes... proposed for this purpose
...countries have been allocated a fuel
allowance which requires South Africa to ban
the use of privately owned cars

As a result of the global warming crisis and

the increase in carbon emissions...

People are depending more on their

local neighbourhood communies
and a bicycle sharing system has been
implemented to assist with movement in
the suburban areas

A Change in Roune
The new shape the roune of an average suburban dweller will take

The streetscape found at the intersecons along the taxi routes depicts life
in the suburbs as a vibrant, acve, moving space; where people interchange
on their various transportaon routes and perhaps stop at the adjacent
Grown Garage, such as Vida e Cae is found here. These nodes act as the
highest, most energised areas in the new suburb.
Note the Solar Taxi on the le stopping to pick up pedestrians waing at the
staon, while people walk and cycle past on the sidewalk.

The secondary suburban roads, serving only for pedestrian and cycling
circulaon, create a calm, homely environment along the street space. At
the centre of the road, a spaced reclaimed from cars, a vegetable garden-
ing stand can be placed, which would help to serve the community on their
journey to self-sustainablility in their suburbs. Programme occuring at the
Grown-Garage nodes can spill out into the now safe, calm streets, such as
in the children’s care centre shown below.

A network of solar powered taxi will run along main arterial routes within the suburbs
which will fulll the link between the bicycle system and brt and gautrain routes

Solar Taxi Features:

Routes and Schedule

The taxis will run 24hrs a day with higher concentraon during peak hours
There will be no strict me schedule allowing me exibility for convienience

Taxis will stop to collect and drop o passengers at bicycle pick up points and garage stops

Taxi Sizes:
There are three dierent taxi sizes in the system - the 3-wheeler to travel the cycling
routes for those who cannot cycle, the four-seater and the ten seater

Since private cars will be prevented to being on the
road, the garagespace on private suburban stands
beome obsolete. However, via the suggesons made
accross the folloing pages, the previous garage
space poses great opportunity to contribung to the
private house, or more eecvely the street. This
diagram demonstrates the the process of decisions
one can now make, allowing one to take creave
control over their street, or house adapon.

Sustainable Systems
Interior Addions

Water Storage Tank Sink

A necessary and also subsidised facility, this could be place of storage
of water captured by down slopes on the proposed buery roof or
downpipes from convenonal at roofs.
The water could then be used in sinks, WC or watering of the pro-
posed vegetable garden. This component help create an interlinked,
sustainable micro-environment around the garage space.
The addion of this amenity improves the mulpurpose capabilies
of the garage; one can either use the sink in the domesc sense as
part of a rental coage, or one can use it can be use in the kitchen of
a restaurant, or for messy acvies as in a playschool.
Adding the sink not only allows one to be able to do certain acvies

Vegetable Patch or Trellis

This is an encouraged and subsidised component to be added to your
garage space; where common fast growing vegetable such as tomato
or carrot can be grown either in boxes placed somewhere on the
sunny side of the building, or vercally on a trellis, as is show in the
‘addional storey’ component.
This allows one to become slightly more self-sucient in the suburb,
and also promotes trade between the various producers and con-
sumers.

Shipping Container
Since the prevention of private cars from the streets, the sales
imports of new cars will plummet, leaving a redundancy in a huge
amount of existing shipping containers previously used on transport
of cars from foreign countries.
Since many of them offer a manageably, flexible space, one could
consider adding this to one’s garage, essentially growing it in volume.
Unused Caravan
Since many citizens who had car-driven spaces such as the caravan
or trailer, they become unusable without their ability for mobility.
However, one could retrofit them and adapt them to the existing
garage space, once again growing the garage in volume.
Carport
The envelope of space that once protected one’s car also now stands
obsolete – however should one decide to incorporate it into the
revival of the garage space, one could create outdoor, yet shaded
special envelope.

Roof Additions
Flat Roof
The use of a flat roof creates an additional platform of space,
however also an outdoor one which is superimposed over the
interior garage space. This outdoor space can be used as a veggie
gardener additional outdoor recreational space, either way

Butterfly roof
