things simple and start by offering your services to
people you know – like the complex where you live.
You can charge about R30 a bin to clean it twice a
month. Doesn’t sound like much, does it? But if you
take a neighbourhood or two with about 500 houses,
you’d make R15,000 a month.
Don’t stop there, make an extra windfall with this
clever sideline
But here’s the really exciting thing about this
opportunity: If you really want to make fast profits –
why not approach large corporations to subsidise bin
cleaning for homeowners. In return, mark homeowner’s
bins with branded stickers. These stickers will offer a
great advertising opportunity for the company and
homeowners will be eager to stick them on their wheelie
bins in return for a free bin-clean every month. No one
loses and marketing your new business becomes a whole
lot easier.

falling prey to common
investment pitfalls

The reasons are numerous: Some select an inappropriate
mix of assets, while others try to “time” the market, yet
others lose sight of their long-term
objectives.
You see, like all journeys, you simply
can’t go anywhere without careful
planning. After all, if you don’t know
where you’re going, you’re sure to get
lost along the way.
And today, I’m going to show you
how to get your portfolio’s on the
right track and how to avoid common
investment mistakes along the way.
Rule #1: Limit your worst loss to 2% of
your total capital
One of the biggest mistakes investors make is to over
commit to a particular position. It’s tempting to commit
100% of your available capital to a single position, but
do so at your peril.
Rule #2: Match your target with your stop loss
Once you’ve decided which share to buy, answer two
important questions.

Stipulate when you must exit the position. This takes
the decision away from a possible future emotive
response. A profit to loss ratio of 2.5:1
is acceptable. In other words, go for a

Here’s why a yellow IV could shorten

Why hasn’t your doctor told you this?
Now I’m sure you’re wondering why, if these vitamins
are so good for you, your doctor simply doesn’t add B-
complex vitamins to your IV in the first place?
The answer’s fairly simple: First and foremost, the
thought simply doesn’t occur to most physicians
practising in hospitals or emergency rooms – because
they’re not being pushed to use them. There’s just no
money in it. Since vitamins can’t be patented,
pharmaceutical companies don’t push them – and
practically no money has been dedicated to controlled
studies demonstrating that they work for any particular
condition.
Safe anti-stress nutrients should be considered in
all stressful situations
But even if your doctor does consider adding B-complex
vitamins to your IV, he could be concerned about
potential interactions with whatever’s already in the IV.
It’s a valid concern, but one that’s easily answered.

The most commonly used IV fluids are made of 5%
dextrose and water (D5W) and saline (either 0.45% or
0.9% salt in water) – and that’s it. B-complex vitamins
are quite compatible with D5W and saline, as well as
with any electrolytes that might be present. If these are
the only things in your IV, don’t hesitate to ask your
doctor to add B-complex vitamins to help you fight
stress and speed up your recovery.
A word of caution…
Some people are very sensitive to taking too much B-
complex – or taking it too fast. Often, they become
nauseous as a result. So speak to your doctor about
adding as little as a 0.5cc to 1cc (cubic centimetres) of
B-complex to your IV to minimise the chances of getting
ill.
If you don’t have any problem with this amount, your
doctor can gradually increase your intake to 1cc per
short IV (less than four hours) and 1cc to 2ccs for
longer ones.
After all, the anti-stress benefits of B-complex vitamins
far outweigh the very small risk of nausea.
And while you’re at it, ask your doctor to consider
adding vitamin C to the solution too – just 10g of this
vitamin will help you heal faster and have you feeling
better in next to no time.
Finally, some good news
for allergy sufferers!
According to research, allergy sufferers are far less
likely to contract cancer than non-sufferers. US
researchers from Texas Tech University believe that
allergic reactions stimulate the immune system,
helping to ward off other potentially fatal
conditions.
They found that asthmatics were 30% less likely to
get ovarian cancer than others and children with
allergies to airborne substances were 40% less likely
to develop leukaemia than other youngsters.

someone who doesn’t fit in with your ideal customer
profile – think about people you know who would fit
the bill. Explain that you could put them in touch with
each other... This way you build you network and get
other people indebted to you.
Pretty soon, you’ll be the person everyone comes to
when they want a business deal to go down.

How to avoid making the million
dollar mistake of the “cat’s eye”

never made a single cent from the product?
Shocking really – especially if you consider that every
government in the world uses this invention to protect its
drivers. And while the world may herald British inventor,
Percy Shaw, for this life-saving idea, the true hero was an
accountant by the name of Richard Hollins Murray.
“What did Murray do wrong?” you ask. He never
patented the idea. Don’t repeat his mistake!
Protect your award winning ideas in five
easy steps…
Step 1: Test the patentability of your product
Determine whether or not your idea is in fact
patentable. This is based on:
1. How useful your patent is. (It must involve an
inventive step. This means it must be something new
and subsequently useful to a person skilled in a
particular field.)
2. How original it is.
3. And how obvious (or not) it is. (For example, your
patent should be something completely new.)
Step 2: Identify the protection you need
“A patent protects the way a product works. Design
protects the look of the product and the Trade Mark
protects the name and logo of the product,” says Clyde
Michael, of Hahn and Hahn Patent Lawyers. For
example if BMW comes out with a new car they will file
for all three types of protection. The patent will protect
the technological workings of the car like the engine.
The design will protect the new shape and features,
while the trademark will protect the name and logo of
the car.
Step 3: Check your idea is original
Next, research whether your idea is original or not. To
do this, access a patent database like

idea is completely new, get your lawyer to start drafting
and applying for your provisional patent certificate.
Step 4: Test your market
Now, it’s time to test the market. The market is an
unpredictable place, so do your research and speak to
people in the industry. At this point, it’s a good idea to
approach potential business partners and consult with
financial advisors to assess how financially viable your
idea is!
Step 5: Meet with a patent attorney
You can Google “patent lawyers in South Africa” to get
dozens of leads. But one of the best ways to find a good
lawyer is word of mouth. Ask people that have gone
through this process for referrals. Once all your
paperwork is in order, start commercialising your
invention. At this point, it’s best to apply for a Trade
Mark to safeguard your invention.
Make sure your claim to
the idea is never in doubt
Post your patent idea to yourself and never open the
envelope. This will not only prove you came up with
the idea, it’ll show when you came up with it as well.
How much does it really costs to patent an idea…
There are three steps to patent registration and three
separate costs:
Cost #1: You’ll incur filing costs for your provisional
application along with standard legal costs of between
R7,000 and R12,000.
Cost #2: After you’re sure there’s a market for your
invention, apply for a complete South African patent.
Legal fees for this process are usually between R9,100
and R16,800.

According to research estimates, over 25,000 consumers
file fraudulent car repair complaints every year. The
estimated costs spent on unnecessary repairs is around
R20 million. But you don’t need an engineering degree
to detect car problems. You can detect many common
issues just by using your senses. Here’s how…
Sounds like trouble…
Squeaks, squeals, rattles, rumbles and other sounds can
provide valuable clues about problems and maintenance
needs. Here are some common noises and what they
could mean:
• Squeal – A shrill, sharp noise, usually related to
engine speed:
– Loose or worn power steering, fan or air
conditioning belt.
• Click – A slight sharp noise, related to either engine
speed or vehicle speed:
– Loose wheel cover.
– Loose or bent fan blade.
– Stuck valve lifter or low engine oil.
• Screech – A high-pitched, piercing metallic sound
occurring while the car is in motion:
– Worn brakes.
• Ping – A high-pitched metallic tapping sound, related
to engine speed:
– Usually caused by using petrol with a lower
octane rating than recommended. Check your
owner’s manual for the proper octane rating. If
the problem persists, engine ignition timing could
be at fault.
• Clunk – A random thumping sound:
– Loose shock absorber.
– Loose exhaust pipe or muffler.
Looks like trouble…
Small stains or an occasional drop of fluid under your
car may not mean much. But wet spots deserve
attention. Identify them by paying close attention to
their colour and consistency:
• Yellowish green, pastel blue or florescent orange
could indicate an overheated engine or an antifreeze
leak caused by a worn hose, water pump or leaking

radiator.
• A dark brown or black oily fluid could mean the
engine is leaking oil. A worn seal or gasket could be
the cause.
• A red oily spot often indicates a transmission or
power-steering fluid leak.
Smells like trouble…
Some problems are under your nose. You can detect
them by their smell:
• Burnt toast smells often signal an electrical short and
burning insulation.
• Rotten egg smells usually indicate a problem in the
catalytic converter or other emission control devices.
• A thick acrid smell usually means burning oil. Check
under the car for puddles that will indicate a leak.
• Burning resin or an acrid chemical odour may signal
overheated brakes or clutch. Don’t forget to check
that the hand-brake is down all the way before
phoning your nearest repair centre.
• A sweet, steamy smell could be a sign that your
coolant is leaking.
Feels like trouble…
Difficult handling, a rough ride, vibration and poor
performance are symptoms you can feel. They almost
always indicate a problem.
• Steering problems:
– Misaligned front wheels and/or worn steering
components, such as the idler or ball joint, can
cause wandering or difficulty steering in a straight
line.
– Pulling – to the left or right – can be caused by
something as routine as under-inflated tyres or as
serious as a damaged or misaligned front end.
• Rough riding:
– Worn shock absorbers or other suspension
components – or improper tyre inflation – can
contribute to poor cornering.
– An unbalanced or improperly balanced tyre can
cause a vehicle to vibrate and may wear steering
and suspension components prematurely.
• Difficulty changing gears:
– This could be a sign that you need to repair your
transmission.

Get what you want in the boardroom
(and the bedroom) with four lessons
for success from a master spy
Dave Thomas is a retired British spy and a master expert when it comes to espionage
and the art of gaining people’s trust.
Getting what you deserve from life is all about making
the right relationships – and, more importantly, making
the most of the relationships that you have with those
people. And if that’s going to happen, your ability to
influence people in a variety of situations is key.
Today, I want to show you how to always read the
situation right and get what you want from those
around you.
Lesson #1: Land that R1 million contract
The single best way to steer a tricky business negotiation
in your favour is to make sure you play the “grey man”
and don’t give too much away. You have to ascertain
exactly what you’re trying to get from the person you’re
dealing with – the last thing you want to do is annoy
this person or get their back up.
Here’s how to do it: It may seem obvious, but people
only do business with people they like. Be friendly, but
also be prepared to be reactive when negotiating. Rather
than blurting everything out at the beginning, try to
build up a profile of the person you’re discussing a
contract with and change your approach to suit that
person’s personality.
Flexibility is key – so start by doing your homework on
the person you’re dealing with.
Lesson #2: Survive the “dreaded” interrogation
when something goes wrong at work
We’ve all been there before – a project goes badly and
your manager’s called you in to rake you over the coals.
Often in cases like these, you manager will try to trip
you up to get you to crack.
Here’s how to survive: Don’t allow your manager to
bully you into saying what you don’t want to. Explain
the situation calmly and accurately.
Don’t get aggressive or defensive – this will only
increase the stress in the room.
Also, don’t be rushed into answering a question. Give
yourself time to think by asking your manager to repeat

the question if you’re unsure about how to phrase your
answer. Above all, be honest about the role you played
in the mistake and indicate what you’ve learnt from it.
Lesson #3: Worm your way to the top
If you’re trying to further your career by making
invaluable connections, remember that you won’t be
able to go straight to the top – it takes time.
Anna Chapman (a US-based Russian spy who was
arrested in June this year) started meeting people who
knew people. From there, she was introduced to other
people. It was only then that she began to weave her
way into the relevant social circles.
The simple secrets to weaving your way to the top: In
any environment, whether it’s down at a local pub or in
the office, it’s worth getting to know somebody. This
means finding out (and remembering) their likes and
dislikes.
And don’t forget to offer some personal details too. By
doing so, you’ll come across as friendly and open, and
people will begin to trust you and give you insight into
things you don’t know about – like the fact that the
manager of your company’s finance department has just
resigned or that the company is looking to partner up
with someone. This will give you the edge if you’re
looking to negotiate your way up the ladder.
Lesson #4: Get the girl!
What’s James Bond without a leading lady? After all, no
spy movie is ever complete without a love interest or
two.
Here’s how to always land the girl: If you want to “get
the girl” your mission will be to befriend her.
The easiest way to break the ice is to make her laugh.
This will relax her and get her to open up. Remember,
building trust is important – and it takes time. It’s not
going to be something that’s done over a meal – she
needs to know you don’t have hidden motives. Don’t
come across as somebody that’s a “wham, bam thank
you, ma’am” kind of guy. If she’s really worth it, take
your time; patience is an important quality that’s often
overlooked.

your dream job
Landing your dream job starts with getting your CV to
the hiring manager. If it never gets there, or if it’s never
read, you have no chance. That’s why the single most
important thing you can do when you’re looking for a
new job is to make sure your CV makes it to your
prospective boss’s desk – and more importantly, into the
“to be read” pile of applications.
Avoid these common mistakes and you’ll beat the other
candidates to the top of the pile.
Mistake #1: First impressions count
Sending your CV via a dodgy email address can stand in
your way of landing an interview. After all, who’s going
to take an email address like floozy69@polka.net or
tazzy101@gmail.com seriously?
Thanks to the increase of free email address sites on the
web, you can set up a professional sounding email
address in next to no time. Choosing something safe –
like JohnBrown1@gmail.com – will give the right
impression and could double the responses without you
changing a single line of your CV.
Mistake #2: Leaving out the job objective
According to career advisor, Tatiana Varenik, one of the
most important things you need to include on your CV
is to show the prospective employer what direction
you’re moving in and what career goals you want to
achieve. To do this, provide a job objective – a brief
introduction to your resume that establishes your
employment goals.
In it, identify the types of jobs you have the right skills
and qualifications for. Including your objective not only
helps you understand your own goals, but also gives
potential employers an idea of where you’re going and
how you want to arrive there.
Don’t forget to adjust your job objective every time you
send out your CV to align your objectives with the
position on offer.
Mistake #3: Selling yourself short
Many job seekers forget that their CV isn’t just about
past jobs! It’s about THEM! So make sure your CV
highlights your accomplishments at your previous jobs
and showcases what you’re capable of, how you

achieved your capability, how you apply your skills and,
most importantly, how the skills you have will benefit
your new employer.
The easiest (and fastest) way to improve your CV is to
remove everything that starts with “responsibilities
included” and replace it with “on-the-job
accomplishments”.
Remember, prospective employers aren’t interested in
the activities you performed on a daily basis – they’re
interested in how well you performed those activities.
Never forget that it’s your CVs job to market you!
Mistake #4: Trying to stand out too much
Unless you’re applying for a job in a creative industry –
like advertising – a professional CV layout is critical to
your job hunting success.
Keep it simple and easy to read, use black ink and a
standard font such as Arial, Geneva or Times New
Roman. Don’t forget to include bullet points (so that
your information is easy to glance through) and make it
no longer than two pages.
Remember, it takes approximately 30 seconds to glance
through a CV. If your information is organised in long
paragraphs that are difficult to read quickly, it most
likely won’t be read at all.

Remember your CV doesn’t have to present your
entire work history. Instead, divide the work history
section of your CV into “Recent Work History” or
“Relevant Work History” and only describe the last
10 or 15 years of your experience. Below your
10-15 year work history, add a paragraph headed
“Prior work experience” and simply refer to any
additional important (but ancient) jobs without
mentioning dates.
