Introduction
W
elcome to the very rst editiono the
Backyard AquaponicsMagazine
. 2006 and 2007 have beenbig years or aquaponics, especially inAustralia. The Backyard Aquaponicsdiscussion orum was ormed in March2006, and in the rst 18 months,it’s grown to become the biggestand best aquaponics orum in theworld. With over 1000 members andmore joining every day, there’s newinormation and pictures being posteddaily. The excitement generated bythe discussions and photographsposted on the group is apparent bythe number o contributions, over90,000 posts in such a short time isastounding. Most states in Australiahave been having group get-togethersor members to meet and discussaquaponics rst hand with each other. The object o the discussion orumwas to create a central learning hub, where people rom around the worldcan learn rom others in a stimulatingenvironment. The online discussionshave led to many new systems beingbuilt by members, with people sharingtheir knowledge and helping otherswith their design plans and problems.Members have been setting up systemsall over the world in all types o conditions, rom icy Alaska to tropicaland desert areas o the United States andAustralia; it’s a testament to people’singenuity the way that they have dealtwith some o their dicult conditions.I’d like to pass on my thanks to everyonewho has been participating in thegroup. It’s only through having a diversegroup o people with varied skills andknowledge that such a melting pot o ideas can be so highly productive. The orum has exceeded my wildestexpectations and become a riendlythriving community that is helping toadvance aquaponic knowledge, andmake it accessible to everyone. But, back to the magazine. Thismagazine will become a urtherextension o the discussion group, aninormation source where ideas, plansand inormation are laid out clearly oreveryone to understand.Where systems will be eatured in detail,sh species documented, and problemsdiscussed, it will be all things “aquaponic”.Like the discussion board, the magazinewill rely heavily on input rom manydierent people. We will also be drawing on othersources o aquaponics inormation romaround the world to try and bring a trulyinternational favor to the inormationprovided here.I you have an idea or a story, oryou’d like to oer some suggestions, please eel ree to write to one o themagazine sta, we’re here to help createsomething that’s useul to everyoneand we value your input. Thanks again,I hope that you nd this rst issue o the
Backyard Aquaponics Magazine
 interesting and o value.
